Couple of questions from those knowledgable about this area. I am going to go up in the next couple of days and try to catch a salmon or two.
Is the Feather river bank fishing only or can I launch and safely use a bass boat? If bank only, any recommended places to give it a try?
I have bass rods exclusively. Should I use something as stout as my Frog Rod or would a loomis GL3 MBR783 do the trick? Also, should I look at moving up to 25-30 lb. braid or go with something like Big Game? I can't really see a need for Flourocarbon.
Thanks for any help!!
Feather River Fishing Questions
Re: Feather River Fishing Questions
Where abouts on the Feather are you going? Using a prop boat can be kinda tricky on the Feather. Be carefull and try to find someone knowlegable about the area to go with you.
You can launch a bass boat at Starr Bend just south of Yuba City. It's located on Garden Highway. There are a few places to back troll between there and Shanghi bend.
Another place to launch if you're brave is from the Marysville or Yuba City ramps and back troll the area above Shanghi Bend.
The water is up so be very careful since you don't know the area. I'd suggest going to Fish On bait and tackle or Johnson's bait and tackle on Garden Highway in Yuba City to get area information.
There are numerious places to bank fish for Salmon from Gridley to Oroville. Most people use 8.5' polls with 12 to 16 pound line for salmon from the bank.
The salmon are starting to come in but Strippers or Shad are what's happening now.

Re: Feather River Fishing Questions
My first post with the new format - hope it works! You can launch a bass boat at one of two Yuba City ramps. Check in at Johnson's Bait and Tackle on Garden Hwy and they can direct you. Be careful - there are lots of obstacles and sand bars in the river and they change yearly. The high water should be helpful to avoid these. Watch your meter!!! I have always used a Loomis 904 Flippin' Stik and 20 lb test Berkley Big Game - that should be sufficient. I have never broken off a salmon with 20 lb test. The fish this time of year arn't as big usually as the fall run, where they can run 40-50 lbs! Have fun - it is a pretty river!!
