Great unit. I have one on my Triton. You will not be dissappointed. Cabela's has them on sale now for $749. Get it quick they won't last long at that price. It's way below what I paid for mine when they were new!

If I understand correctly you can link two together one at the bow and another at the console? Can you mark waypoints and find your way back with them, does it require an external or internal antennae.

sorry for all the questions, but want to upgrade my electronics to better

If you have the LowranceNET cabling set up, you can share waypoints (set on one unit and have it created on both), sync backlighting, etc... also can use a single GPS antenna if you wish, although I prefer having my antenna as close to the unit as possible so I have three antennas installed on my boat.

Using the trails, you can find your way back or around... one of the best features of a GPS IMHO.

The LCX-28C requires an external antenna.

It's a great unit - I used one until I replaced it with the LCX-38C.

All the LCX/LMS units are discontinued hence the bargains available for them! They are still great units and will provide most anglers with all the information they need.

I have mine linked with the LowranceNet. If both units are on and I mark a waypoint on one, it is stored on both. If one unit is off, it won't work for both.
You can also link the newer LCX/LMS units with an Ethernet cable and be able to use either transducer with either head unit. I will be getting the Ethernet cable for my system soon. I always get interferance on my front unit when the back one is on so I have been stopping the sonar when I get up to fish. The front one is so clear then, I can watch a dropshot weight and lure all the way to the bottom and watch it bounce around down there. My wife likes to see a picture of the bottom too though so with the Ethernet cable, I can shut off the sonar on the console and switch to displaying the bow transducer and she can see the same picture I'm seeing.

if you were replacing your current setup what would you choose between these two

HDS-5 or LCX-28C HD, or Humm 798C HD SI

That's one of the 3 I'm yearning for.

Descisions, descisions

Have to admit the price of the HDS-5 and the LCX-28C aren't that far apart with the sale on.

Congrats on your purchase

Good job Steve, you will enjoy that unit.

calworks, If it was me, between those choices, I'd get the 28 HD. You will get either a basemap or lake detail or coastal detail with the HDS-5 but it is nowhere near as detailed as the map on the 28HD where you get everything from inland lakes to the Delta with tides and currents. The enhanced detail of the HDS unit will be partially compensated for by the larger screen of the 28HD. Now if you were talking about one of the larger HDS units with the Insight mapping, it would be a no brainer. They truely are a step above the LCX units but of the choices you have, I'd go with the 28 especially if this unit is for your console. The larger screen and better maps make it a much better choice for use while running than the 5" HDS-5.

Don't know anything about Humminbird so I can't comment on them. Side Imaging does seem to have a ton of potential.

The 5 is a 5 inch screen, the 28 is a 7 inch screen comparable to the HDS-7. Do you want a bigger screen?
I have owned both Humminbird 7 series and Lowrance LCX. I would not buy Humminbird.
Between HDS and LCX, It would depend on whether you want the new features of HDS or not. The LCX units are discontinued. You will not see new updates in their hardware or software. The LCX units are good. I have 112/113's on my boat but the new ones have stuff I would like. Just not willing to dump mine to get new.

just something better, I currently use a Eagle 28C on the console and a X135 or 145 on the bow.

LCX28 is an awesome unit.

I absolutly love mine on the console and it is linked to the LMS520 on the bow. You will need a Navionics Hot Maps chip in addition to its pre programmed lake contours. Lowrance's pre programmed contours are helpfull but not even near what Navionics provides for a small amount of money.

Good luck you wont be sorry you made the investment!

Later; Big Ed!

Big Ed..of course the hot maps chip is a separate purchase for the LCX? It comes with USBase map, nautic or lake insight maps.

The 28HD comes with Lowrance Inland Lakes, Fishing HotSpots, and NauticPath built in. I have a Navionics chip but I never use it. I find the detail that Lowrance built in just fine. Especially with our lakes down so far right now, there is no map that will be very accurate. For the Delta, NauticPath is all I ever use. I just prefer the look of it to the Navionics chips.

It should do the trick for our project boat. We have no console on the boat so it will be mounted up front.
Ive owned a Humminbird 981si and a 997si. I LOVE Humminbird support and sidescan but I couldnt really get into the sonar.
