First time: Lake Mojave fishing license? Please help.

Post by Big Ed »

I am heading to Lake Mojave for the week between 4/8 - 4/15. It is the first time at Mojave for me. I plan on fishing 4/9 through 4/13 and will stop in at Havasu for a day on the way home. Even though i am camping with the family i will get in at least half a day of hard fishing in the mornings and the other half casual fishing and boating.

Where can i purchase a license to fish Mojave? Do i need a stamp on my Calif license or do i need to purchase a license specificly for that body of water? Which state has jurisdiction? Can i get one here?

Can somebody give a guy advice on what to throw in that clear 62 degree water? The air temp has been high 80's to low 90's with a little bit of wind mixed in. I will launch out of Katharines Landing. I have no clue what to throw there. Im thinking blades and rip baits maybe! What color and style worms might be good this time of year? How far should i run from Katherines?

Im trying new waters, please help. I have definatly considered the possible spread of the Zebra mussel. I will be taking precaution in making sure i do my part. Thank you for what ever advice i get! Big Ed!

Its been awile for me, but the the rip bait and blade are a good choice but the thing we cought fish on was red, my #1 bait was a (Clear-red flake Spider jig) #2(splitshot red Twin-T curl tail)and then lipless crankbaits, blades. I would start off with the ripbait (Lucky Craft Pointer Chart. Shad #100SP)

License
You will need a Nevada license or arizona licence and a river stamp, at least that was how it was in the 80's, it's the same licence as Lake Mead.

Good luck

I hope that trip is the week after the "River Run" (biker gathering) because Bullhead and Laughlin during the river run is no place for a fishermen or his boat (been there, done that).

You can get your license at Katherines. You need a non-resident Arizona Colorado river thing. Mojave is Nevada on one side and Arizona on the other.

You can also get your license in Bullhead at many places including Wall Mart.

As far as the fishing is concerned, I am sure others know that lake much better than I but I have fished it in April a number of times and always seem to hit it on a down cycle. Dropshot points and blades on the flats seems to product the best. The area around Katherines gets hit hard. I would run a least a few miles up lake but no need to go all away across the basin. Just my 2 cents.

I hope you hit it during the spawn and there are bed fish everywhere. Good Luck

You can order an Arizona license online at the Arizona fish and game, get the Colorado River fishing license. It is cheaper then a few days and will be good for the year, and works on Mead as well if you decide to come back later during the year. You will need the Nevada stamp to go with it of course. I am not sure if you will need a California stamp on it since you have the California license anyway, but you probably have the AZ stamp on your cal license anyway. (for havasu)

As for the lake (which is my favorite lake to fish during the spring):

Water temp is in the 60s, bass are in spawn mode, Jigs are the best bet for bringing in the better fish (5-7lbs), but quantity will usually come on plastics. (texas rigs, drop-shot) If you want to throw rip-baits and Blades, have at it, but I wouldnt recommend it that much.

Just stay around Katherines, that whole area around there holds up rather well and this time of the year the wind can really make the main lake ugly, you will be protected down in the canyon.

I will likely be there on the 14th, GL.
