Fishing Line Conditioners
Does anyone here use fishing line conditioners, such as "reel magic" or the KVD brand, ect...? Do they work; do they gunk up the reel? Are they better for casting or spinning applications? Thanks in advance.
Re: Fishing Line Conditioners
I've been using the KVD Lure & Line conditioner for several years now, I have found that it makes a big difference in the managability of both my fluorocarbon and braided lines. Smoother casting and less memory with the Fluoros, it also helps to prevent over runs. I have not noticed any gunking on my reels since using it.
Re: Fishing Line Conditioners
TangleFree line conditioner has been around for a long time and IMO the best available and the 2 oz sqweez bottle fits in my pocket. Picked up KVD line conditioner a year ago and it's basically silicone based spray and less expensive than TangleFree.
RealMagic has a history of guming up the gears and bearings.
If you are casting fluoro a lot, in warm weather, a line lubricant is a big advantage as it helps to keeps the line wet.

I use KVD I spray it on my line when the line has been sitting for some time without use the night before I go out and it performs like new, Casts amazing and reduces the memory very well. I love the KVD line conditioner.

I've used KVD stuff for 3 years and it works great. Also works real good as a dashboard cleaner...I'm not kidding.

If you want to reduce line memory and improve castability these are great products, but keep in mind, when still wet these products do have a scent, and when dry I have some doubt that they still perform as well as advertised.

Re: Fishing Line Conditioners
I use a fly line dressing box. Its a box you spray your KVD in then clamp around your line and spool up. For reaplication I cast out close the box around the line then reel in. I dont know if this is better than just spraying it on, but it completely covers evenly the entire line. Plus you will be suprised how much dirt comes off your line when you look in the box and see how dirty it gets. Just my 2 cents.

When you read the term "wet", the line may look dry and still be wet. Nylon absorbs water , hygroscopic, you may not see the water or line dressing on the line, it's in the line. Fluorocarbon isn't hygroscopic and doesn't absorb water, so a line dressing that bonds to the outside skin of the polymer "wet" the line, however water doesn't.
Flurocarbon monofilament line needs a dressing to be "wetted", otherwise it remains dry shortly after leaving the water and wound onto the reel.
A line dressing that changes the tensile strength of the line, also reduces the lines memory. If a line dressing can reduce memory without affecting the tensile properties and "wet" the line so it cast well, then you have a good line dressing. KVD, from what has been posted, seems to be a good line dressing. Tangle Free and KVD work well, Real or Reel Magic doesn't. Haven't tried Ardent's line dressing yet.

Re: Fishing Line Conditioners
I use the KVD on the heavier fluorocarbon line (17-20) and I can tell a big difference.I love that stuff.
Re: Fishing Line Conditioners
Use it all the time. If you're like me and you're bird-nesting at couple times a day, it helps A LOT!!!!
