Folsom Lake Speeders

Post by Ray Vanacore »

Folsom
For months now all I have read and heard about was the wake boarders, the skiers, and the jet skies at Folsom Lake not obeying the rules.
Now I’m getting complaints from the same people that you all bitched about. It seems like some bass fisherman, and if they read this forum know who you are have there own speed limit laws. And the laws that are on said lake don’t pertain to them. I have had no less than 5 complaints this weekend about bass boats speeding around the lake, Plus others boats. I guess Bob Simms was right when he said some Bass fisherman have there own speed limit. Way to go guys, you are sure making the people look up to our sport by not obeying the speed rules here on Folsom. Also I was told today that starting on Wed. August 20 2008, Browns Ravine Gates will be closing at 8 PM, no more 10 PM till the further notice. All other entrances will be open till 10 PM. So if you are there and not out by 8 PM you will be locked in and if we see fit, can have tickets issued . Also the Monday thru Friday guy that worked the booth in the afternoon is no longer with us.

I am sure there are all groups of boaters that are breaking the 5mph rule on Folsom and yes there are sure to be some bass boat guys as well. Yes it is a law on the lake and is should be obeyed and so is the 65 mph on the freeway. If the state parks catches you then you may get a ticket. I have seen bass boats doing things that would also not be favorable to the image of the sport when the lake is full and you can run. Do you want to know how many times I have been up the rivers in the 5 or in New York Creek and had a boat run through. Hell the guys that recover the rafters run thru the South Fork 5's every dam day and nobody does anything about that. If the State is going to put a speed limit on the lake then they should enforce it, of not let us all boat at our own risk like the sign at the gates says.

Closing the only paved ramp and parking lot on the lake at 8pm is just one more thing that shows us all that Folsom Lake State Park doesn't really give a rip if we come out to the lake or not and I am suprised the Brown's Ravine is doing this as well and then saying if we aren't out by 8 then you guys can ticket us. This is why many of us have not purchased our state pass.

Last year was the first year in the history of the lake that State Parks has put the 5 on that lake at this level and they kept it on our lake for six months. The reasons were complete b.s. and it was all one person's decision and he has left State Parks. This year we will have the 5 for nine months at least. We have set a precident and it will be this way for years to come. What will this do to property values around the lake that you can't use. What this has done to local business is terrible. The loss of sales tax dollars in Placer and El Dorado County should be a crime. The fact that now State Parks will not even listen when we have asked them to consider 25 mph speed limits while we can still use the lake is beyond me. They can't make the lake 25 and "no ski" because this would just make the skiers and wakeboarders mad. So we have a lake that nobody can or will use and now even if you want to go our for a few hours in the afternoon you can't because one of the two ramps on the lake will be closing at 8 pm and you have to be out or risk a ticket. So that means you have to pull your rig thru downtown Folsom and then out thru the lake bottom to launch at Granite Bay so you can fish and if you want to fish in the South Fork area then you have to idle all the way around. Even if there is nobody at the kiosk why do the gates have to be locked at 8 pm. Is Browns Ravine now telling us they don't care if we come out either?

This giant problem is costing a bunch of folks a great deal of money and I know Ken at BR is one of them but it doesn't have to be but nobody will stand up to the brain surgeons running Folsom Lake State Park.

Now all you Delta Rats would be up in arms if they (State Parks) put a 5 on the Delta during every minus tide so you didn't run into anything that wasn't marked and they were saving you from doing any harm to yourself......well that is just what they did to us here. And then we have to see State Parks spokespeople on the news telling us that unless Arnold signs a $10 per vehicle tax to be added to your car registration they will be forced to close some parks. But look on the bright side if they do that then State Parks will be "free" for everyone to use......when that happens you guys will look back at the day a few boats ran over the 5 mph speed limit with fond memories because there will be way bigger problems when it is "free" to use the state parks. Lock the gates then and see how big a hornets nest comes out when everyone has paid their $10 to use that park.

Ray we have been friends for years and I know that you are not the decision maker and may not even agree with any of this but there are many of us that are really pissed off that State Parks are flexing their muscles this way.

Now my biggest question is what radio show are you listening to on Saturday morning if you heard that quote?????

I dont agree with the 5 mph no more then you or any one else but the matter was brought to me by other boaters and I thought that I would address it here. As to where I heard it was told to me by my boss from some radio show by Bob Simms. that is all I know, if I am wrong then I opologize. I agree that there are more boaters that do obey the rules, and it may have been an isolated incident, all I wanted to get across is that it make us look bad.
The reason we are closing the park at 8 is an economic reason . They laid off the Mon thru Fri afternoon guy , plus all the marina help except for me as I'm part time and can fill in whenever needed . As for the 8 oclock that is also a security reason if there isn't any one there to patrol the boats that are in storage. The next guy dont come on till midnight

I think its a bit of both, Bass guys and wake boats. There was a wake boat back in the 5mph area towin a wake boarder last week. Until they patrol the lake these things are going to happen.

I know were not even letting jet skis in or the day guy isn't. we have tried to get the rangers to come out and patrol but they always have excuses. We hear that they are going tocomeout on weekend and then no show , they were suppose to be there Sat and Sun. and we know how that turned out. It just P.M.O when I get complaints and there isn't anything I can do or say that appeases everyone .

Kb is on the money .Sunday there was a jet ski running all day @ the gb ramp. The 5mph was posted within 50 yards to where they were going out of .If they are going to make rules that they cant enforce then they sould not get made when no one follows them. And as for telling on each other i think people need to mind there own bizz and try to have fun .let people run there boats in the river channl eep water and mark where that is .I think they have plenty of markers for that .
