What's your gear ratio for frogs?

curado e7 (7:1)
Re: Frog Reel Gear Ratio
Go with the 7.1:1, you can always retrieve slow but if you get a blow-up you can get the frog back faster to recast. I use Daiwa with the Twitchin Bar on both of my frog rods. Time is almost here to start throwing the frog.

Re: Frog Reel Gear Ratio
I prefer 7:1 but that being said I do Not use 7:1 I use 6:1 for a simple reason, I keep blowing up the 7:1 reels on hook set when fishing braid...I don't know why, brand didn't matter...I have tried several.... as far as being able to refire at an active fish, you may save a second or two, as far as moving the fish out quickly using the right rod and 65 pound Vicious Braid, they move well.....

No question it's got to be the 7.1 to 1. The 7.1 to 1 offers you everything the 5.1 to 1 does with the extra ability to get on the fish faster. When I get a blow up I want to be able to pick up what ever little slack I have in my line and hammer home that hook. My preference is the curado E. I have fished the Abu's and the Shimano's and in my opinion Shimano makes the better reel's.

I use a Revo SC right now. Awesome reel!

Dan, what do you mean when you say "blowing up"? Are you actually breaking the gears in the reel on the hook set because there is no give in the braid and you have your drag locked down?DAN wrote:I prefer 7:1 but that being said I do Not use 7:1 I use 6:1 for a simple reason, I keep blowing up the 7:1 reels on hook set when fishing braid...I don't know why, brand didn't matter...I have tried several.... as far as being able to refire at an active fish, you may save a second or two, as far as moving the fish out quickly using the right rod and 65 pound Vicious Braid, they move well.....

Re: Frog Reel Gear Ratio
Which reels specifically failed? I've had some older junk reels fail on me when using braid for frogs.DAN wrote:Yeppers busting gears and the reels just don't reel anymore...Or sounds like my tranny in High school
