. Both Sides Spending Big on California's Same-Sex Marriage Ban
The constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in California has been drawing large contributions from proponents on both sides of the issue.
The amendment, which will appear on the November ballot, was introduced following the California Supreme Court's May 15 ruling legalizing same-sex marriage. The amendment states: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
The gay rights group Equity for All and a related organization raised about
$2.6 million in the first half of 2008 to fight the amendment, Proposition 8, according to an analysis of campaign fundraising by the San Jose Mercury-News.
That's about $300,000 more than the amount raised by the major backers of the amendment, Protect Marriage and the National Organization for Marriage-California.
The amendment's largest boost before June 30 came from James Dobson's Focus on the Family organization, which gave $250,000 to Protect Marriage.
Focus on the Family spokeswoman Monica Marti told the Mercury-News that Dobson's organization believes the outcome of the vote on Proposition 8 will affect the rest of the country as well. California does not require couples to be residents to marry there.
Donations have continued to pour in since the end of June, and much of the money has been coming from outside California. The Mississippi-based American Family Association gave Protect Marriage $500,000 on July 21.
"The rest of the nation is watching," said Protect Marriage spokeswoman Jennifer Kerns.
Equality for All recently received $1.05 million from a political action committee of the Washington, D.C.-based Human Rights Campaign, and $250,000 from the Gill Action Fund, a gay rights foundation in Denver.
Both sides believe they can raise between $10 million and $15 million by Election Day.
Back in 2000, a proposition declaring that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California" passed with 61 percent of the vote.
The Supreme Court ruling struck down that statue, meaning the constitutional amendment is needed to ban same-sex marriage.
Barack Obama opposes the initiative, calling it "divisive and discriminatory".
His presidential rival John McCain announced his support for the amendment in June.

Hmmmm. Can't figure out why anyone would care about gay marriage. Doesn't affect my life or liberty in any way.

Bud you need to go fishing and think where you stand or do you just like to make post no matter what the issue is and follow others and not make your own stand! I already told you FishaHallic (Dave Hall) is a paid Political Consultant introduce by the Obama campaign from Florida to Nevada because Nevada is a swing State.I really don't care what people do behind closed doors. I think gay bashing (literally) really stinks and harsh penalties should be handed down. I believe it is caused by genetics, not choice. I really haven't studied this and heard the other side to find out if it will affect school children or not. I know that one way to garner support for a cause is to make the opposition out to be a threat to children. It may or may not be, I don't know.
Having said that, I have never understood why people want do be identified so strongly by sexual their sexual preferences. All this BS is making people mighty intolerant outside of their little world. Its not going to play well once you leave San Francisco and Sacramento. I can't for the life of me, figure out how they got so many politicians in their pockets.
I think very soon they'll be sorry they made it such an issue. I predict the future state and national elections won't be in their favor.

Marty has me all figured out, I packed up my whole family and moved away from a wonderful home in Florida where I could fish offshore, inshore or bass fish all within 15 minutes of the house to move to Reno. Now I have fished a total of 1 full day trip (where I caught my personal best fish
During the 6 months prior to my move I had 2 surgeries, one for a herniated disc in my back (which meant I could not help pack or move any of my property) and I had my gaulbladder removed 3 days before my move. Why would I go thru all this crap? To move my whole family to Reno from Florida change my daughters school 2 times in 6 months, have it take me almost a year to find a job and to buy a new house that needs over $30,000 in landscape work and is not near as nice as the house I left. Oh, I also sold my house in Florida during a very bad time for real estate.
I did all this Marty to move to Reno and try to look like I was a fisherman so as to hook up with someone to catch a bass so I could post on a California fishing website in the political forum. A political forum mind you that has only about 10 people that post. One wonders if I could get this website in Florida and I would not have had to move.......damn, I wish I checked that before.

As for the first post, that was about Harvey Milk Day, not gay marriage. If Arnie signs it, he may as well run as a democrat because his political career as a republican is over.Marty wrote:For not affect you life or liberty in any way then why the three posting Greg

The second post was a less biased article on Harvey Milk day. Compared it to John Muir Day which is probably more accurate. They'll go nuts in San Francisco like they normally do and Lakeport and Nice will continue on like usual. It [edit "did, not didn't"]did however try to bring children into the fray, from a conservative which is S.O.P.
And as I stated above it won't affect my life or liberty in any way. So I have a pretty fair idea of where I stand.

We have a lot of pets. Do you think they might be in danger too? No. No kids, no grandchildren, just about 70 nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Far as I know only a few are concerned about gay marriage. And I don't think any have enlisted in the gay army.
