Well, its almost 2011. For some 2010 was a year of great success, both on and off the water. For others, it was a struggle to say the least. As it applies to fishing, goal setting is one of the keys that successful anglers use to gauge their progress throughout the year. Without goals there is no way of knowing when you're on track and when you're not.
On other forums this type of post is an annual pass time, perhaps it is here as well but I haven't seen it. Here is a video I filmed a couple days ago about goal setting, once you've seen that its time to talk.

What are your goals for the coming year? What were your goals, if any, for last year? Did you reach them? What went right and wrong? What are you going to do about it?
It doesn't matter if your goals are specific or general. Whether you want a 22 lb bass or to catch your first jig fish. Whatever they are, putting them in writing in a public place will make it easier to achieve them this season. At the end of the year we'll look back and see how we did.
I'll go first to kick us off. My personal goals for 2011:
__________________________________________________________
1) Catch a new personal best spotted bass. Its currently 5.0 so I should be able to top that no problem. The trouble is, I want a 6.5 lber.
2) I'd love another personal best smallmouth. I'm currently in the 6 lb range and I would love a 7 lber, but I will honestly put this one on the back burner if I haven't caught the spotted bass.
3) I'd like another largemouth over 15 lbs. Its been a very long time, I've hooked a few and completely butchered those battles. Its time I get one to the boat and fill some of the "weight range gap" between my biggest and 2nd biggest.
4) Catch a double-digit bass from at least one lake where I have not caught one before. (I'll have to drive farther but I've got a few options in mind.)
5) Help at least one friend catch their first double-digit bass.
Those are my goals for the coming season. What are yours?

Hey Matt,
Just wondering what you do to target those teeners instead of those gosh darn 10.01-12.99 lbers that keep gettin' in the way! Maybe I need to dip my baits in Mona-Vie or somethin? Help me out here, make another video please!

Matt, I know how you feel. Sometimes I catch a fish and know its at least 10 pounds but really dont want to get distracted by it. So I try and shake it off while reeling it in, with the hope of a "teener" picking up my glow in the dark flatfish and meeting one of my preset goals. I'd rather watch a Diabetes commercial staring Wilford Brimley than that again.

Uglystick,
Good luck! You've got some great goals lined out. Stay focused and make it happen.
Sticking a big one at Clearlake will taker perseverance but you can get it done.
Sacrtrain,
I believe you missed the message that was intended. Did you catch this part,
"Every two pounder is appreciated and enjoyed just like the 5 pounders and 10 pounders, but my eye stays on the prize."
My point is not that certain fish don't matter, nor that I'm some great fisherman, or that I think I'm better than anyone else. Each of us sets goals according to what we want out of fishing, business, life, etc. Yours may be completely different than mine and that's okay. The moral of the story is simply to set some goals, get them on paper, and hopefully improve throughout the coming year.
I shared my personal goals so that people could see that its not just words. I apply the principles to my personal fishing too.
Whether you agree with my goals or not really has no bearing. I wish you the best of luck in 2011 and I hope you reach whatever goals you may set.
