Got me a Frog Rod...but now I need a Frog Reel?

Post by birdi23nls »

Okay, here is my situation...I'm running a little low on funds right now so i'm trying to get a rod and reel to pull double duty til I get the money to buy another set up.

Eventually I need rods that will throw small swimbait's 1-2oz, frogs, and a rod for flippin/punchin. I chose the rod I did because I believe it can do all of those things pretty well until I can get some extra money to get rods for each.

I got the Dobyns 736c

But now I need a reel that can meet the challenge. If it is even possible.

I was thinking about getting a Curado 200, Zillion, or Revo stx, spooled with briad to take care of my froggin and flippin/punchin. Then if I can get an extra spool for that reel, I can throw small swimbaits on mono or floro.

What should I do?
Where does the 736 shine? Frogin, Pitchin, or swimmin?
What reel would you purchase if you were in my situation.
Is the Zillion worth the extra money?
Do any of these reels have options for an additional deeper spool I can buy to throw with the swimbaits?
Also, what kind of braid should I buy for frogs and pitchin in the delta?

I'm new to this and any information you can give...will really help me out.

Thanks
Jared

736C is definitely one of the best frog rods out there. It's light and stought enough to drag fish out from the jungle. For the reel, I recommend something small and light with a great drag that you can tighten down. Something like a Revo STX ... a Zillion would be a fine choice as well as a Curado D ... 7:1 ration would be my choice.

Revo S, Sx, or Stx is a great choice. Just remember though, the 7:1 Revos have only like 12 lbs of drag compared to 20+ of the normal gear ratio revos.

Get yourself a new 7e Curado and put 50# Power Pro on it and you have the exact same frog/wakebait rod I use. One of my favorite set ups. You can use it for a jig rod too. If your short on funds, get another reel and put some 20# florocarbon and you have a great pitchin/flippin set up. Congrats on the new Dobyns. You will love it.

why the high gear ratios? 7:1...with this techniques is it a huge advantage and why would it give you an advantage?

Yes, for frog fishing you want a fast reel. You need to be able to take up line quick to get them headed your way and out of the slop! It also allows you to burn it in fast to get another cast out and get more in through out the day.

+1 on the revo stx..........Jared , ya can't go wrong with this reel, excellent drag ( you just cinch it down tight, 50 or 65 lb braid and winch em out of the cheese ). You are more than welcome to toss mine for awhile ( it's left handed though ). I'll give ya a buzz later this evening.

A Shimano Curado 200E7 is the perfect reel for your Dobyns 736C frog rod. You DEFINITELY want a fast retrieve for the exact reason that Mike mentioned.

Curado E7, hands down, and this is a 200 sized reel which will have enough line capacity for 20# to get you by swimbaiting until you can get a 300 sized reel.

I have 2 revo SXs and had/sold a STX, and while I love my revos I like my zillion a lot better for frogs. When you get down to the 1/2oz sizes like the bobbys frog I think the Zillion casts them a lot better. Drag? I'm crankin it down anyway

thats a sweet reel man should work out well for you.

Just a fyi if you buy the tru tungsten weights for punching skip the peg system they have, they suck. Just get some bobber stops and use those as your peg.

i like punching with the maverick bugly or a RI dbl wide/sweet beaver, and my friend does well with the yum craw papi.
