The California Delta can be one of the most rewarding fisheries or one of the toughest fisheries in California. Right now, the Delta is not fishing to its potential. The Delta is known to be called the Diry D because of how it treats fishermen not because of the water clarity. The anglers that consistently do well are the anglers that understand where the fish move during the changing tides. Finding a pattern that works at a specific tide can help unlock the combination of this tough fishery. When fishing the Delta from a kayak one hopes that the tide in their location is optimal but what it really comes down to is location. Location seems crazy to say considering the Delta has 1000 miles of shoreline and everything looks fishy and the same, but if you’re not in the right area, bites may be few. Knowing where the fish move to during the incoming tide and the outgoing tide can prove to be as important as a good pattern. How can an angler learn the fish migration on a tidal waterway is time on the water. Now put into perspective which tide is the optimal again this requires time on the water. After interviewing the winning anglers, the incoming to high tide was the best.

Once the lines were officially out and the fish were submitted to Fishing Chaos App. Greg Blanchard won the KBF at the California Delta with 81.00”. Blanchard fished the Central Delta and covered water with Bobby D’s spinnerbait with Phil Dutra’s finesse blades in the double willow combination along tule points.

“There was a ton of small bait fish in the area I was fishing, this helped me with the pattern I found.” Blanchard said, “The blades on the spinnerbait were the exact same size as the bait fish in the area Blanchard was fishing.”

He attributes his first-place finish to the contribution of the bait fish in the area he was fishing. On day two of the KBF event, Blanchard noted that the bait was gone which made his spinnerbait bite extremely tough. Blanchard thanked the Dark Horse Crew for all their great times the night before tournaments and Yak A Bass for putting on such a great event. Josh Griffin came in second place with 80.75” just ¼" behind first. Griffin fished the main channel points and concentrated on the rip rap banks with aquatic weed growth. Griffin used a Deps Evoke 1.2 square bill crank bait in blue gill color. Griffin caught his first keeper within the first hour and then went a few hours without a bite. He returned to the area where he caught his first fish and caught his limit.

“I stayed on that one spot all day long.” Griffin said, “I would keep changing the boat position to give the fish a different look.”

“I caught two fish at the same time on one cast.” Griffin said, “In my excitement, I threw back the smaller fish and then later realized that fish would have given me the win.”

Griffin worked over that one point on the main channel picking off fish that would set up and feed. Griffin thanked his family for all their support with his fishing.

Rachel Uribe finished in third place with 80.50”. Uribe caught her first fish on a buzz bait running the bank. After no more bites on the buzz bait, she changed to a Reaction Innovation pocket rocket to help fill her limit.

“I noticed a ton of fry in the area I was fishing so I changed to a rip bait and caught a 16” fish.”

After ripping for a while with only catching small fish, Uribe changed back to the wacky rigged pocket rocket. Uribe decided to change locations to the main channel and culled up on the rip rap banks with tule patches on her wacky rig Reaction Innovation pocket rocket. Uribe thanked her mom and Marko for all their support. Uribe also thanked her sponsors Bridgford Foods, Voss Weights, Reaction Innovation, Bioenno Power, Torch Eyewear, Robo Worms, SIMMS, Daiwa, Performance Tackle, Sunline, Dalton Toyota and A&M Graphics.
