HARD TO BELIEVE

Post by Greg_Cornish »

But I'm retiring from fishing. My health has been degrading lately due to old age and increasing health problems.

The effort and dinero it takes to get on the water outweighs the benefits I receive from it and it is no longer fun for me. I'll miss the fun times on the water in some ways, but when I do, I'll be thinking of myself as a younger man.

I'll really miss the rides up Rodman Slough.

I dragged my pontoon all the way from CA to MN in hopes of reliving old times on old waters but the pollution caused by farming in the Midwest and the damage to the environment astounded me. All medium to shallow lakes are choked with Eurasian Milfoil and the deeper lakes are choked up out to 7 feet of water. A 25 acre lake we use to have all to ourselves had boats around the perimeter ever 50 yards and the DNR can't keep up with stalking the lakes.

Comparatively, When there are 4 tournament is one weekend on Clear Lake, there is really no pressure on the fish compared to here. All I saw was 3 inch crappie and smaller blue gill.

I'll be leaving my boat here on consignment and heading home to see if my house sitter hasn't burned the place down.

When I get back I'll have 2 bushels of fishing tackle to sell. Watch the for sale boards and auctions.

I'll probably still post from time to time out of habit, but I imagine that will gradually decrease.

I'll be posting this on other forums too.

It has been fun.

Find a local website and snag a backseat when you get the itch. You ain't dead yet so don't be giving up. You can still give us crap on this board when you feel like it. Good luck and hang tough. My bro-in-law has been in a coma for three weeks and has brain cancer so until you get to that point keep on trying. Whoever said these were the "golden years" was full of crap.

Greg... Sorry to hear about your declining health issues and decision to fish less. Although we have never met, you will have a place in my boat anytime needed. Don't worry, I can bungie your rig down (LOL).

Thank you for your donation of all the tackle to the CBAF Kids Camp. We filled the childrens tackle boxes full of your "lead heads" and worms. I know one of my kids caught a bass on one of your darter heads. I wish you could have seen the smile on their faces. Oh wait a minute.. You Can... Just click here->

Thanks Greg for your posts that were always full of wit...

WOW Those kids are much luckier than we were at our church gatherings. There was always an accordion player at ours. As my father in law used to define a gentleman. "Someone who can play an accordion, but doesn't."

Greg,

I'm sure you'll find plenty to keep yourself occupied with upon retiring from fishing, Greg. A man with as many talents as you have, and with a keen a mind, will surely find projects that fit your physical comfort zone.

Personally, I'm getting more and more sore every time I get in and out of a boat so I can appreciate the physicality of it all.

I do hope you'll keep in contact with us all and when you'd like to get out I'm sure we can make comfortable arrangements for you.

Thanks for all the contributions to the site, Greg!

Hey Greg sorry to hear that hopefully after you take some time off you'll come back. I have taken a few years off here and there. but I always come back.

My son thanks you for his rods and is disappointed we did not get to fish the FPT this year, but I sold the boat to fast thinking I would have time to buy a nicer boat before the prices shot thru the roof.

But we missed it the prices shot UPe so we agreed to wait till this winter when people are alittle more desperate so we can get more boat for the money. and then we are gonna hit it next year plus he'll be a year older.

keep in touch :D

Greg. Sorry to hear about your health problems
I did the same - only sold off the boat, & 7 rods & reels. I's starting to feel better, so, my plans are to hire, Cooch, Rich Thiel and B. Barrack for some fishing in the DELTA and to visit with Jay Liu for some fishing at Shasta. I, just don't have the stamina to fish more than 4-5 hours.
There will be days, weeks where you will feel very good and can do things, like to fishing. Even if it is only at a near by pond, lake or slough.
I'm wishing you well, take care.

This is the same thing I told to my fishing partner of 30 years when he told me he was quiting. I fact I told him; If I had to, I would carry him and put him in my boat if he wanted to drag some "C" rigs around the lake. And I have. He since has moved to Texas to be close to family.

Hey it sucks when you can't do what you use to do. It will happen to you too . No one ever get younger.

Good Fishin
