Have plans this weekend? How about casting a line for the very first time? Saturday, Sept. 4 is FREE FISHING DAY which means you can fish without a sport fishing license.

If you are new to fishing, and not sure if you will enjoy it, free fishing day is a great time to give it a try. We have great video resources for you to get prepared. Like this

Where you will find videos explaining how to rig your line, clean and fillet a fish, cast with a closed and open bale reel (and what that all means). You will also find a series of webinars covering tackle box basics, an overview of California inland fishing and broadly how to become a California angler.

Not sure where to go? Check out our fishing guide to get some ideas: https://wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Guide
Also, CDFW’s Fishing in the City program offers additional how-to-fish resources for parents helping kids. Learn more: https://wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing-in-the- ... your-Child

Anglers planning to fish inland waters and release the fish that they catch can help reduce fish stress caused by warmer and lower-than-usual water levels by voluntarily adopting the following practices:
- Assess the water for extreme drought conditions before committing to fish there
- Fish before the day heats up
- Handle fish as little as possible
- Try to keep the fish in water as much as possible when removing hooks
Being mindful in these ways also helps to increase survival rates.
