Hook2 7 and use of older transducers

I have a spare splitshot transducer which is non working and was wondering if i can use an older Lowrance transducer and marry the Hook cable to transducer for test purposes. Also can I fabricate a transducer from a crystal purchased off of one of the electronic parts stores, for test purposes?
