I have NEVER had ANY say in any of the rules or decisions reguarding this event so please dont think that way. I do have a big event coming up which the organizers felt was a good venue to promote THEIR tournament because most of the Western Bassfishing clients will be there at some time that weekend. So if you have issues with the rules or promoters please take it up with Ron and John. In fact when they announced this Tournament a few days ago, I was just as suprised as everyone else. Not trying to speak for Ron or John, but I doubt they are going to change any rules. And if you cannot make this years show, sorry, hopefully you can make it another year. And also, I was invited to fish and turned it down so the real, true Western bigfish hunters get their due chance. Rick G.

Why does everyone keep trying to turn this into a Swimbait event or make it complicated or way too far over the top? :?

What is so difficult about letting it fly as it stands? If you don't like the format - plan, schedule and run your events. Or do y'all just want Ron and Ken ta fergit the whole idea? Which is about where I would be at this point :(

It is a Big Fish tournament...a swimbait isn't always the best way to catch the big girls, especially at Casitas with a bunch of traffic on the water

FUC#ING HEADACHE!!!!!!!! Read the original format...then read the updated format..... If you dont like it, stay the FU$K home. There is no bigger bunch of whining bitches than there is in southern california. If its not Basstrix, its lake closures. If its not closures, its who makes the best boat. If its not who makes the best boat its Bass Pro sucks.....for the love of god people!

I have an even better way to solve the problem about who thinks the HBC will be fair or not:

MAKE IT INVITE ONLY!

Let Ron, Ken(the title sponsor,) and John decide who is invited. If you dont get an invite, you dont fish. I'm sure they can find at least 30 stiffs to send invitations to that have more money than skill...

While we're at it, lets tie all fifty boats together with a rope and let the ranger drag them from spot to spot so no one has an unfair advantage...I wish today was January 24th so I wouldn't have to listen to any more if this juvenile complaining. :x

Well, maybe from the 1st post about the tournament: "trophy bass anglers and BIG BAIT SPECIALISTS in the country. "

I think the 'big bait specialists' might refer to swimbaits of some kind, thus the OK to use longer poles than standard rules apply too, and thus the folks that think this is somewhat about swimbaits. That's my take anyway.

All of a sudden every jackass on this website is an expert and/or politcian.... Why was it that Ron, Ken, and John were the ones that had the foresight to bring this to fruition and no one else? You all seem to have alll the answers and seem to know how best to run it. Why dont you set up your own big fish event? You can call it the "attaboy" classic. There will be no rules, no sign ups...you can use live bait and whomever complains the loudest gets to be boat number one... and First place will be a case of cheese to go with your WHINE and an Attaboy for catching the biggest fish...

well it is a public website and many people have different views and express them differently i see gary and dl are getting there g strings all bunched up on the subject sorry for loving a democracy, I do like your answer though DL make it invite only so its not a slap in the face to some guys that want to fish but can't make it to ricks place Hey Ron im voluteering to be in republican gary's boat i want to watch him and see how positve he really is. Didn't Mr roger die. Take it easy people just think 25 guys who have to jump through hoops isn't very fair. I guess your right lifes not fair. Im out on this subject its a circle jerk.

Well I guess I didnt make it in the top 25.....

Post by Pete Marino »

They have all been contacted Ron said and they have all accepted. I cant wait to see the list of the top 25 that did. I know there are maybe 12-14, maybe 15 guys who I can think of that deserve to be there in front of me but I cant think of 25. I guess 12 big fish awards in the last 5 years when money is on the line doesnt compare to guys that own swim bait companies, local Casitas hotshots, and guys that make their own videos of catching big fish, which i'm sure are guys that make up at least 10 spots on the top 25 list. We will soon see...I may be wrong though because I dont know everyone..
If I'm wrong about my assumption about the top 25 and they are all indeed deserving ,then the list will be extremely impressive. But in my opinion there are NOT alot of guys that catch the big ones CONSISTANTLY in tournament competition. I also DONT think there should be any Elite series guys invited ..i.e ..Ish, Ike, etc etc...But I guess if you want the best of the best...they should be in.
Names that jump out at me that should be in the top 25 are...and who are guys that catch the BIG bass of the tournament IN COMPETTION on a consistant basis are.. in no particular order..
1 Shawn Bailey
2 Mike Long
3 Scott Brownlie
4. Bill Siementel
5 Paul Bailey
6 Pat Kinery
7 Joe Uribe Sr.
8 Joe Uribe Jr.
9 Kyle Grover
10 Matt Newman
11 Justin Kerr
12 Art Berry
13-14 (other guys who consistantly catch big fish in tournaments)
15 ME!!
16-25......Guys that consistantly catch big bass during the week for fun in a non tournament setting..
I guess it depends on what Ron and John were looking for....a guy that catches big fish during tournaments consistantly or does it alot outside competition lines...which is still impressive!
There are maybe 8-10 guys that do it consistantly more outside the line of competition...Those guys are definetly deserving but doing it in tournaments means more IN MY OPINION...
I guess I didnt factor in guys from No. Cal....I'm just assuming that this is a So Cal. event..keep that in mind before everyone piles on me for my opinion.

I should have been able to squeak in IN MY OPINION...but that is my enormous ego talking..

Maybe I'll get lucky and get in at the Bassathon...

But then again....maybe not because as much as I like Anglers Marine and Rick Grover and all he does or has done for me and the bass fishing community here in So Cal...I wont be spending the night in front of the door at Anglers Marine to get into a tournament that I feel like I should have been invited to in the first place.
All 50 people should have been invited...IN MY OPINION..if 25 were going to be invited.
The people I listed are VERY DESERVING...and should have been invited...but something tells me that some other guys on my list were also left off when they shouldnt have been...not just me.
I'm not "bashing" John or Ron here.....I'm just stating my opinion. I like and respect both of those nutcases and I'm a personal friend of John's. They had a tough job in front of them by having to pick and choose the top 25 for the invite. But I wish they would have just picked the entire 50 or just left it at a 1st come 1st serve sign up.

I've never heard so much whinin and cryin from a bunch of grown men. Get over it and get over yourselves already. Let Ron and John run THEIR tournament. If you babies don't like it, have your own. And if you're not fishing it (Otay) lock it up already. It's not the end of the world if you guys don't like this format or don't get in the tournament.

Pete, not to be a dick but plenty of other dudes have the same credentials. Who's to say if Ron did pick the 50 that you would be one of em? Ask Mark and Dennis Taylor how many big fish checks they cashed at Casitas alone. Ask Larry and Eric Elshere the same question. I don't see any of them on here throwin a tantrum.

There are more big fish...not to be confused with big bait...guys out there that are conistent in their game, but do not fish tournaments. Who's to say they aren't just as much, if not more, of a threat to win than a regular tournament guy? Why don't these guys fish tournaments??? Just read all the bullcrap and pissin and moanin and other crap in this thread alone and you'll get a good idea of why those guys don't fish tournaments.

"Not to be Rude" or "Not to be a dick"...it is usually followed up by a comment that made them sound like a dick and your comment has indeed done that.

I'm not saying that those guys you mentioned shouldnt be involved...hell they might be on the list for all I know, and they would be deserving. How do you know if they are or arent on the list?? Are you on the list?
I also said that I thought that it should have been a complete invite tournament or a first come first serve sign up.
I am not saying that I would have definetly been on the list if it was a complete invite of 50... I would think that I would have been though..and if you dont agree...TOO BAD!! I could care less what you think.
I feel like I should have squeeked in...if you dont agree..again...TOO BAD!!
This is just a tournament I would have liked to compete in...it sounds like fun.
So are you on the list?? By your reaction..I'd have to say you are..

OMG!!!!! MR Pete you wouldnt make the top 1000 let alone top 50 what a joke. You are making a complete *** of your self. Look at me! look at me! Everybody needs to ge this in thier heads.
THIS IS NOT A TOURNAMENT FOR TOURNAMENT FISHERMAN!!! iT IS A TOURNAMENT FOR BIG BASS GUYS!!!!

How big were those "big"bass you caught?
4-7LBSI am guessing. The big guys dont even count those!!
If this tournament was about who had the biggest ego you would be a shoe in, heck no need to even fish it you would just be crowned the king!!!!!
Are you for real. You actualy think you should even be considered? HA HA HA HA.
Nobody cares about your 5 pound fish you caught to win you many "big" fish awards. Nobody cares if you caught them in a tournament or on a weekday. They are still NOT BIG FISH!!!!!
You like so many just dont get it. This is about the best fisherman who consistantly catch big bass. It doesnt matter if they catch them on a weekday or a T day as long as they can put BIG bass in the boat. Now by big bass I mean a big bass by big bass hunters terms not a 5lb tournament bass. Off the top of my head I can probably name 50 guys who would be 100x more qualified than you. You are probably thinking anybody could win this thing, anybody could get lucky. Well guys that actualy catch big fish know thats just stupid. It makes as much sence as anybody could win the Bassmaster classic. all you have to do is catch 5 bass. Everybody who has ever fished has caught 5bass. How many of them have caught teen bass?
This Tournament is for big bass guys, quite trying to change it into a regular tournament.
You should probably go get a hot air baloon and hook it up yo your head. It must be extremly dificult to carry that thing around all day.
If you want to donate fine, wait in line like the rest of guys who wili get crushed.

Unbelievable!
This is clearly the reason why I quit fishing Club Tournys! This sounds like one of our meeting...

Ive never been one to Run to the defence of Rick G like half of this board, but come on guys the man has been nothing but help on this board. He is a wealth of knowledge and I would hate to see him leave this site because of someones comments here.

It amazes me that an angler can't simply state a suggestion and leave it at that. Nothing is wrong with suggestions.

To Hippie, DougH, and the Return on Investment angler let go! Its fishing!

lol Pete, but I admire your self confidence!

Yes Ray, big fish aren't easy to catch. But, one lucky bite could win here, which is why I'm hoping for a lottery pick.

It will be Swimbait Nation, but trust me, a big hairy jig and pig in late January could nail the winner, and since I consider myself to be the 8th best fisherman in SoCal  I want in !! Muahahahaha

Tony,

I'm way down with the whole thing, I'm only begging for a lottery pick, cuz I'm not going to drive 3 hours for a chance at the last 25 slots. And I'm not sure if my big fish credentials would put me in the top 2500, altho Casitas is my home lake, and I do have a few fish over 10 lbs...

What happens if 250 dudes show up for those last 25 slots?

I think this is the best idea in the last...uhh well ever! It's going to be epic. Who wouldn't love to be in on the first one?

Pete you're quick to voice your opinion, just as I did. And that's fine if you think my opinion made me look like a dick, I'm not here to win a popularity contest and I knew what your reaction would be when I posted it. No I'm not on any list, why in the hell would I be???? Why would I take a spot from someone who earned it? I'm not even fishin it. That's why I've stayed out of it and let the guys run their own tournament however the hell they want. Most people don't care less what you think about it either, especially when you're on here tootin your own horn. It's one thing to privately send Ron a pm about it, it's another to push it in everyone's face on here...as you can plainly see by the reaction. I respect the hell out of you as a tournament angler and you've taken my money many times, but.. ah nevermind.

Post by Pete Marino »

my post to you again and help you with the "big" words because you have missed my point.

If money is on the line...ITS A TOURNAMENT. You say that this isnt a tournament for tournament guys?? And you said I am making myself an *** out of myself...sheeesh. Thats the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Everyone I mentioned IS A "BIG FISH" guy AND THEY ARE TOURNAMENT ANGLERS. You make NO SENSE..
Being able to catch "big Fish" when a tournament is on the line means something. This arguement is like the arguement of is this a swimbait only event?? Of coarse it isnt. This event may be won by a guy throwing a jig, a blade, a crankbait etc etc....
And if that is the case then the person that does it wouldnt be one of the "BIG BASS" guys you are thinking of.

Yes this event will probably be won on a trout bait but its not a sure thing.
You make it sound like the only guys who are "big Bass" guys are t NOT TOURNAMENT guys. Thats rediculous!!

As for me and my resume..I am proud of what I've accomplished. Yeah its no where near what alot of guys have done, namely Mike Long, Art Berry, Shawn Bailey, Bill Siementel..etc etc..but I think its pretty decent for a tournament guy.
And FYI...whats wrong with catching a 6 lb big fish in a tournament when everyone else caught smaller fish?? It was the biggest of the day. It is what it is...
And NO I havent ever boated a "TEEN" bass, in fact my biggest is 10 1/2 lbs...yes during a tournament...

I dont remember seeing the rule that said someone had to have "teen" size bass on their resumes to qualify to fish this tournament...The reason is because THAT RULE DOESNT EXIST.

Maybe you should put on a tournament that is called the Mike Long, Bill Siementel, and Shawn Bailey Swim Bait showdown...because they are the only TRUE big Bass guys because they do it during the week AND when the money is on the line in tournaments. Everybody else can be debated!! Or better yet you can have a tournament that is called, " The swimbait maker, video maker and non tournament big bass guy Challenge", because those are the only "BIG BASS" guys in your myopic eyes.

Wait..dont tell me...you should be there...right?? You are probably someone that is trying to pimp your swimbait company or videos...

YOU HAVE NO CLUE!!

"And FYI...whats wrong with catching a 6 lb big fish in a tournament when everyone else caught smaller fish?? "

HELLOO!!! Yes it is "just a tournament"..but it's not a tournament where most teams are just fishing to fill a limit. It's one guy lookin for 1 bite, it's a whole different animal.

I never tried to take away from your hard work and accomplishments Pete, but there are entirely too many other tournament guys at the same level that would be considered right along with you.

"Wait..dont tell me...you should be there...right?? You are probably someone that is trying to pimp your swimbait company or videos... "

Is that comment for me??? Hell no, I accept reality and understand that in no way should I be in that group of 50!! As for the rest of the comment...it's called business. What swimbait company wouldn't want to be part of this event!?!??! I realize we don't have baits on the shelf yet, does that mean we can't support an organization or trail yet? Like J&T...we supported Ron at each tournament. Obviously not with product, at the meeting one random team got their $150 basic entry fee back. Anyone at the tournament had a chance at getting cash in hand before they even launched their boat. That's just a small example of what's to come, even more off the charts once we get this adventure on the shelf. So why would we, or any big bait company, shun this event?

As for "pimpin videos"..if you call two rednecks with a headcam pimpin videos...you're out to lunch. There are no kicks backs or any monetary gain for something we have a blast doing and letting people watch.

Speakin of lunch...let me know when you're comin up to Casitas again. I'll buy ya lunch and we can shoot the ****.

I didnt mean to come off the way I did..but I even made mention of my enormous ego. So I expected the negative responses...Its all good. I am a tournament guy with an huge amount of confidence in my skills and its comes off as arrogance at times...especially here when someone reads one of my posts.

That being said...I'd still like to fish the event so I can have a shot at Catching that donkey that worked me at the Top Stick event this year.  I still lose sleep over that one.. :x

Pete No I am not good enough to be listed in a top 25 list however I am alot better big bass fisherman than you. How do I know this? because I have actualy caught some!
I never said that regualr tournament guys shouldnt enter or be invited. My point which your ego wouldnt alow you to see is that this tournament is about catching big bass. It is for the guys who consistantly catch big bass. If they catch big bass in tournaments than they should be on the list. Like I said before a 6lber is not a big bass for these guy. It doens matter if you caught the only 6lber in a tournament of 500 guys . Its still not a big enough fish. You do not qualify as a big bass fisherman. You may be an excelent tournament bass fisherman but you are out of youe leuge here. Think of it this way. You might be a very good minor league
baseball player but that doesnt mean you could start in the NFL. Very few have been able to do both just like in bass fishing. Very few sucessful tounament guys are also consistant big bass guys. Its two diferent sports with two diferent goals. Being good at one does little to prove you are good at the other. After reading your post it is painfuly obvious you know very little about catching big bass. This tournament is not about swimbaits or guys who make videos. Its about catching big bass. Thats why the field is limited. If you put a ton of boats out there you will shut down the big bite . You will have guys using small fish techniques like you mentioned, blades cranks and dropshotting in hopes that the big boys strike out. Then it becomes just like every other T. This one is diferent. It is not made for guys like you. Of couse you could fish and in your mind get that "lucky" bite but the reality is the consistant guy will get the bites not the lucky ones. You try to discredit guys who have swimbait Co.'s or make videos. Why because they dont fish your kind of tournaments? I am sure who is who will be invited. This means guys who catch BIG bass in regular tournaments. Guys who catch "BIG" bass on week days and guys who are KNOWN Big bass catchers. Baits of choice doest matter as long as its not live bait. Dont you get it? Its a tournament for big bass fisherman!!!!!! You credentials although impresive as a local tournament fisherman are not even worthy of mention in an event like this. Get over your self. You try to discredit the event itself and or the guys putting it on by calling it a swimbait only or you have to be in a click or make a video or own a swimbait CO. to get in.
NO you have to be known for Catching big bass. You are not so no invite.
BTW do you actualy think you would be more qualified than any of the guys who make swimbaits and fish them? I am sure you could catch more big bass than Rago, The Thigpens, Allen Cole, Mattlures, Scot Whitmer, and all the rest of them? You think you are more qualified than ANY of the elit 50 guys?
Learn how to fish for big bass and then you will realize the diferences between the two sports.
I am not saying one is better than the other. I am saying that being good at one means nothing in the other.

You're funny guy... unfortunately you have no clue.

No I dont think I can catch more big bass on a daily basis than Rago, the Thigpens etc etc,...but in a tournament format...which this IS...I think I would have a decent chance....not a great chance...because I obviously dont know the lake like some guys but I have a punchers chance....and if you dont understand that or believe that then you really HAVE NO CLUE!!
THIS IS A ONE DAY TOURNAMENT...NOT a 365 day log of Big Bass.. PERIOD PERIOD PERIOD....and I have confidence in tournaments.

enough said!!

Hey Gary....

Post by Pete Marino »

Did Troy give you half of his winnings from yesterday?? Thats what a good team mate would do. :D :D

He was obviously in the zone yesterday...he could have beat us all in a canoe...

Pete I only called you out becuase you were so adiment about being on the top 25 list, you even went so far as to say there were only 15 guys more qualified than you. Even though you probably wont admit it I think you realize how ingnorant your statemants were. I dont know you and might be a great guy, I have nothing against you. I am just tired of guys trying to change this event into a regular tournament. It is designed to be diferent. things that are new and diferent usualy are not understood at first.

Don you are sooo correct and I apologize for being ugly about this.
I just hate seing people criticize this thing because they dont get it. It is vertualy perfect the way it is for what it is. A BIG BASS TOURNAMENT.

You just dont get it I guess..

Post by Pete Marino »

You just said it is a BigBass TOURNAMENT......a tournament guy will prevail.. I GUARANTEE IT!!!

To be able to produce a big fish when money is on the line between 6am-3pm is tougher than spending days and days and weeks and weeks on the water fishing for big bites.
This is a one day 8 hour tournament not a month long tournament or a year long event where each fish is logged. The tournament guys who are used to going after big fish during tournaments will prevail here..

If you dont get that..you never will.

Pete I try to give you the benifit but you just keep punching yourself in the face. Each time you post on this your IQ goes down 50 points. The only regular tournament guys that have a chance are the ones who are also acomplished big bass catchers. Long, Siemental John Kerr, Matt Newman,etc.. The average guys like you are just dontaions. But why not donate? it will be a lot of fun and there always is a chance(a tiny one). Just like anybody could win a 5 fish T.
A regular tournament guy will not win!
I am still laughing at you being on the list!!     thanks for that!!

Yeah okay whatever you say big guy...

Post by Pete Marino »

And everytime you speak here, you make less and less sense and its confirms my notion that you are an idiot.

I'm over all your rediculous comments. You are a classless guy who suffers from a serious case of Big Bass myopia who makes zero sense. Your wife and kids must be proud.....
"I'm a better big bass fisherman than you"...what a childish statement. You should be embarrased.

I'm done with this topic with you. Its like talking to a 10 year old with you...whoever you are...??? Ray ??what?
I'm done with you...show up at a tournament sometime...I'd like to have a chance to take your donation Mr. "Better big bass fisherman than you"....what a joke you are...too funny.
