Lake Perris is a small lake that has been furnished with manmade structure during a low water year. They moved huge piles of rock with some smaller rock piles along the shallow East end of Perris. There are also tires placed along the shoreline for more fish habitat. The lake has a deep tree line that surrounds one side of the lake that holds plenty of huge bass with the shoreline wood and rock that covers much of the lake. There are some very large bass that live in the lake with one that measured 24.75” caught by Tim OConnor during the ABA Open event. This lake can be considered a “bucket list” lake due to its significant size of largemouth bass that live in the lake. A hundred-inch daily limit is very possible at any given time at Perris.

Once the lines were in and the final tally was submitted to TourneyX web site, Jason Mathiot hammered a huge limit of 89.25” dominating second place by 5.75”. Mathiot used a drop shot to capture his win at Perris Lake.

“I fished the grass in 10 to 12-feet of water with my drop shot rig.” Mathiot stated, “I had to dead stick the Robo worm to get my bites.”

“The fish seemed to suck the bait in and not move, you really never felt a bite just when you lifted up you could feel the weight of the fish.” Mathiot specified, “I had all my fish before 11 AM, and only caught 7 fish all day long.”

“I fished a hundred-yard stretch most of the morning and all my fish came off that one stretch.” declared Mathiot, “There was some bait in that area that helped me. They may have been in a shad spawn.”

“As a competitive angler, one has to fish for five key bites and that is what I focused on.” stated Mathiot, “I knew I could catch tons of fish, but I wanted to try to catch 5 big fish.”

“One of the keys was that I had to fish the grass in 10 to 12-feet of water.” expressed Mathiot, “If there was no grass, I couldn’t get a bite.”

“I left that area and never culled up, I think I should have stayed there and could have culled a few more fish.” declared Mathiot, “After making the long run from my first location, I found fishing tough and should had stayed in my first location.”

Mathiot thanked his wife for all her support. ABA for hosting such great events and Vivid Fishing Company for supplying him with all their amazing jigs.

James Choi finished in second with 83.50”. Choi came in on tournament day with an open mind and focused on the deeper rock piles on the East side of the lake.

“I noticed tons of bait in the area where I started so I fished in deep water to catch my fish.” proclaimed Choi, “I stayed in the same area all day long.”

“Junk fishing is what I had to do all day long.” divulged Choi, “I caught 6 fish all day, one on a free rig, rip bait, drop shot, and a small swimbait.”

“The fish I caught were in 15 to 30-foot range along a tree line and rock piles.” disclosed Choi, “The key to the bigger fish was to fish deeper.”

“It was a slow bite that day.” revealed Choi, “I was lucky to catch 5 nice fish during the day.”

Choi thanked his wife and kids for all their support.

Wrapping up the top three was Kerry Peeler with 82.25”. Peeler caught all his fish but one on a Megabass Plus 2 rip bait in the Mat Shad color and one on a Plus 1 Sexy French Pearl.

“I caught fish on the East end of Perris with the rock piles. I focused on the rock piles between 8 to 20- feet of water depending on which rock pile I was fishing.” communicated Peeler. “The fish were hanging around rock.”

“I would see fish around piles of rock while working the rip bait over the top.” proclaimed Peeler, “They would come up to the bait and nose up to it, some would bite but most would just look at the bait.”

“I had 4 fish by 9:30 AM and then decided to move to another location.” broadcasted Peeler, “I only caught a small fish there, so I left.”

“I would use a different cadence to catch my fish, it just depended on how I felt the fish would want the bait worked.” publicized Peeler, “The biggest key was the color of the bait, Mat Shad was the deal.”

“I have been fully emerged in fishing the rip bait to learn how to catch fish on the bait. I have spent most of this year on how to tune and work the rip bait.” transmitted Peeler, “One of the biggest factors is the color and second factor is the cadence used for the conditions with the different water conditions including temperature and color. I still have tons to learn but it feels good to be able to catch a third-place wining bag on a rip bait”

Peeler thanked his wife for all her support with his fishing.
