jig color question...

Post by aNNieNsaLTIE »

what does a black and chartrues jig duplicate, forage wise of course. I do not own any and If i bought some I would like to know what I would be trying to imitate.

All i could think of is a dark little bass or bluegill that has been hiding in the grass and tulles up shallow for their whole life.

Any opinions?

you only need two colors of jigs. Black, and Brown. As far as trailers you can use these colors on both to produce fish.

Blue
Purple
green
red
white

figure out what works for you. There is way too many trailer brands available, and a lot of them are really good. It becomes a guessing game.

Jigs- Wadda, BobbyDs, and Rod Strainer

Trailers- Yama, Paca, Zoom, pork, etc, etc...

Good luck!

I,ve seen some crawfish that color. But I think some colors got tried in the past and worked, so they keep being used.
I'm getting to cheap to buy jigs with color in them , I add the color with the trailer or with a yamamoto colored skirt under the jig skirt, it adds bulk and color.
As G-man said I buy black or brown jigs then add color as needed

I don't see black and chartreuse as a color to imitate forage, it really doesn't. Honestly, imho, its just a color to help bass see the jig in dirty water, and I mean dirty. We are talking 4 inches of visibility and lower. Black trailer with a chartreuse tail helps too if you want to add bulk and a little more "glow".

Black/char jigs work well in dirty or stained water with char/blk flake yamamoto twintail 5" grubs. What i do with a black jig is accent the throat of the jig with very bright char silicone instead of accent the hole skirt its self. Same with blk/blue jigs or blk/red jigs if your throwing them in clear water it cut down on being very bright through out the hole skirt i found by silhouetting just the throat of the jig the fish hone in on it better.

You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

Just how and what bass see in regards to color combinations is anyones guess, we don't know.
When selecting the jig skirt color; choose one with good contrast in low light conditions, not just poor depth of light penetration.
The black / chartreuse combination color skirt has very good contrast, works well at night and during the rain. Add blue and you will have a little better general use color combination, IMO.
The skirt color may not be as important as your choice in the trailers, it's the trailer that creates the profile and movement when falling down through the water column and when it fisrt comes to rest.
If I was limited to two skirt color combinations they would be; black/purple/brown and redish brown/green/brown. Match the trailer color to one of the three colors in the skirt.

The jig color thread was the first I have made on this site. It is also the first that I have discribed one of the color combinations, a closely held secret for a few decades and a gift for my northern CA bassers.
