Jigs

Post by JVGondal »

Here’s another. 5/8 flipping
I like to flip 1 oz and 3/4 oz jig as a reaction
I don’t work those deep very often. The bass usually hit it before it ever hits the bottom or just as soon as it does. That’s for shallow flipping with the extra quite water penetration 1 to about 3 feet deep. I go down the bank on the troll motor at a walking speed. Flip flip flip. Pretty fast
The jig is in the water about 10 seconds or less

I like to scale down to a 3/8 or 1/4 in same pattern when working it back deeper to 10-12 feet with some dead sticking

IMG_0811.jpeg
In the bag I put in a couple drops of mineral oil
It turns the color of brown rubber bright. Same with the black rubber. Gives it a better action
I myself prefer rubber skirts over silicone.
Silicone has a very great brilliance in color and a wide variety almost endless
Rubber on the other hand is very limited in my opinion
I like to mix rubber with silicon
For a trailer good old pork is top pick for me but these days it’s tough to get ahold of. When you do it’s expensive and usually junk
In its place I found berkley makes great trailer cut like pork that is very effective. And they don’t dry out like pork
Of course I use plenty of plastic trailers
However pork catches giants for me. Uncountable number of 8-10 pounders and my personal best of 15 pounds. 14.88 to be exact.
That came on a 3/4 black jig and pork in march 2013

The jigs you show in your pictures
That's a do-it mold called a hidden eye weedless
brush jig

I have the 3467 BSH-3-SA FG-30 Ring Barb Hook
styles 10798 or 32786 Assorted 3 cavities 1/4 3/8 1/2 oz.

The 3459 is BSH-3-LA FG 30 Ring Brab Hook style
10798 or 32786 Assorted 3 cavities 5/8 3/4 1 oz.

To tie that type of jig I tie you use 3 silicone tabs folded and cut in half. With the jig head in the upright position with hook up and fiber guard glued in place
tie your thread on the collar of the jig. Center the silicone evenly from the underneath side of the jig. Centered tag ends forward open ends in front of the curve of the hook still centred. The roll the silicone around the jigs wrap the thread 3 times tighten down the 3 half hitch knots  no glue the hold knots. The open ends will flare half the work is done then trim the tag ends for the other half it will flare into a puffball release from the vise take and trim it evenly al around. It take a out 3 minutes to build and trim one up ready for fishing. :D

I build these the same 3 tabs of fine or regular grade round rubber and silicone accent half tabs tied in first then and the round rubber next. Same 3 wraps with thread tighten down the 3 half hatch knots done trim edge to make a lions collar. Again about a 3 minute build and trim.
Weedless brush jigs hidden eye 1/4oz.

I didn’t get it at first. You said hidden head
I don’t see the heads at all so I thought that you meant the heads are hidden in the skirt

There are several jig heads you can use that hide the hook eye but expose the hook for the use for different trailers.

I know about the heat shrink trick but it don’t work so well for me on hidden eyes

Also I have an old football jig mold that takes a small weed guard. I have not found a base pen to fit making it impossible for me to powder paint
Vinyl and the clear hardener is what I been using
Not ever sure it’s the weed guards are still available

:| I like using using 1/16 & 5/64 base weed guards
7/8" to 1 5/8" long & .018 fiber
I have a double collar do-it football mold I use it for light fiber guards either 9 or 11 fibers.
I've cut up a bunch of old coat hangers for my pins I use for powdercoating. You also use brass welding rod for your pins also.

Those look like some super craw colors I see in the river. What kinda trailer you put on those?

Iovino had some nice trailers that would fit Fairly small and just a pair of claws in color S-20 or the Oxblood

I might build the courage to attempt a lions mane jig
If I do I will post the picture successfully, fair or fail

I wish don iovino still made those small trailers they were the bomb I wish I could get my hands on the molds. He also had a 6" spade tail worm that was a fish catching worm. I use 4" twin tail grubs Yamamoto's
To make the lions collar jigs cut three 1 1/2 " strips of round rubber reg grade stack them on top of each other then split them in half. Put your jig head in the vise hook up tie your accent color in with the tag end out past the front of the jig head. Then center the round rubber on the jig head three pieces on each side wrap the thread three times tighten down and add 3 half hitch knots tighten every knot again No Glue used on thread
That's a no no trim rubber and silicone tag trim into a ball your done.

I will try with what I have around here
Thank you for sharing your knowledge

I still have a stash of Iovinos. Here’s my favorite colors that survived from bleeding and just age

The natural with red flake and black stripe is a sleeper that slays them.
His very first color #1 in the package is a good one too

SB9 green killer
Purple magic !!!
P&j. That one bled out so no more. Same with S20
I really liked the S20-C. Had The chartreuse tail

But really that natural brown one pictured
I forget the # but it’s called liver. Don recommended that one to me for the delta. I use to call and order directly
He was right. I never seen anyone else with it
And to think. We over look the natural crawler colors

One of my friend I fish with has a compartment in his boat stack full of the 6" spade tail worms. I'm sure there still there. He also has devoted his time to drag racing so I know he still got that compartment full lol.

I can teach anybody how to tie these type of jigs or other styles I tie including blade baits spinner baits and buzz baits.
I still owe and in person sit down on how to tie both the puffball and lion collar jigs with RMANZO as soon as I get well enough to travel I'm going to keep that promise to him. Will put together some fish catching colors for the mother lode lakes
