All area children age 14 and under are invited to Chico's award-winning (and completely free) "Hooked on Fishing, not on Drugs" kids' fishing event, which will take place from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, at Horseshoe Lake in Upper Bidwell Park. Some 8,000 pounds of catfish will be planted in the lake just prior to the event (limit one fish per kid).
Free bait is provided by Oro Dam Bait...
Plenty of loaner rods and tackle will also be available to borrow for free, but those who have their own tackle are encouraged to bring it.
Remember that lead sinkers are not permitted in Horseshoe Lake. Free fish cleaning will also be provided by Chico Rotary.
Experienced anglers are encouraged to act as volunteer "fishing coaches." Orientation is at 6:45 a.m., but late arrivals are welcome, and the kids will love it even if you can only help for a few hours. Bring a pair of pliers to cut line and get the hooks out of fish.
Local anglers can also volunteer from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on May 17 (Thursday night), for the rigging and repairing of the 600 "loaner rods" at the Rod and Gun Clubhouse at Horseshoe Lake. Please bring a pair line clippers and your best knot-tying fingers and be there.
