This TOC was the result of that NewJen TOC situation with an off-limits this weekend on Clear Lake.

So with NewJen off-limits anyone that fished Clear Lake this weekend for the ABA TOC couldn't fish next weekend's NewJen TOC.

In Case You Missed It

Subject: Team Championship Off-Limits
From: Craig Sutherland, American Bass
On July 18th, 2023, a few days before the meeting where we draw our 2024 California Event Permits, an angler reached out on our website chat and informed us, ABA, that NewJen Bass has an off-limits period of 10-days that will cover our 2023 Clear Lake Championship.

Our understanding was that NewJen did not have any extended off-limits for any events. At two separate meetings in 2022, a statement was made by the owners of NewJen that they did not have extended off-limits. In those meetings, all organizations expressed to Wild West Bass that extended off limits on major tournament waters was bad for our tournament community. We purchased our Championship date under the belief that no off-limits would cover the prior weekend.

We reached out to Jennifer Price yesterday, 8/2/23, on a phone conference. We were hopeful that the NewJen off-limits could be adjusted. In that conversation, Jennifer Price clarified that they have a 10-day off-limits period for their championship. She said that the 2023 championship date is changed from previous years. This year, 2023, the date is one-week after our ABA Championship, so the off-limits now covers our event.
We asked if the off-limits duration could be reduced, starting on Sunday, to allow anglers to fish both events. Jennifer said that it is not possible reduce the 10-day off-limits. Jennifer also stated that due to anglers' plans and event plans, a date change is impossible.

We understand and respect their decision to stand by their off-limits and not changing their date. We also cannot make a late date or location change to our event as our anglers and staff have scheduled vacation time and made reservations based on the date and location we announced many months ago.

Newt stated in a text to me that they will not have off-limits that will cover prior weekends starting in 2024. Even with this said, we, American Bass, purchased a permit for Clear Lake on September 27-28, 2024, which is one week after the 2024 New Jen event. This will eliminate the concern for the 2024 season. Our only restriction to pre-fish on Clear Lake is that the two days prior to the competition you can only fish with the partner you qualified with or by yourself.

We congratulate all the anglers that qualified for both championship events, and apologize to those who now cannot participate in both. Had we known that there was an issue, we would have resolved the conflict at the time we purchased the permits in October of 2022.

ABA offers two additional championships in addition to the Clear Lake championship event. If you have 5 qualifying ABA events in 2023, you are qualified to enter one Championship of your choice. If you have 6 or more 2023 events, you can enter all 3 championships.

Creating opportunities for anglers has been at the center of our focus throughout our 40-year history. Again, we are sorry if this situation has a negative impact on your 2023 Championship.
