Line types for the Delta ?

Post by WANNA HOOK BIGGIN'S »

I am new to the Delta and was wondering what some of you use as far as types of line on the Delta? What type for swimbaits? Topwater? Cranks/traps? Blades/chatterbaits? Worms/creatures? Jigs etc? I use a 7' m/h glass rod for my cranks/reaction baits, a 7'11" m/h swimbait rod and a 6'8" m/h and 7' m for everything else, matched with curado's. Should I be using braid for certain applications and fluro or copolymer for others? Any help/advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks to everyone in advance. You guys are awesome!

Welcome to WHB. I've been fishing the delta for over 15 years. To answer your question, you can get by with just plain ole mono like Berkley Big Game. We've been using that line out here on the river for ages.

But to get more specific, here is what you'll find spooled on my reels.

Swimbaits-20 or 25 big game
Flipping- 20 fluoro and or 50/65 braid
Cranks/traps- 30lb braid for ripping baits out of weeds or 12lb fluoro
blades/chatter-15 fluoro and/or 30 braid

I mix and match different reels and often have similar baits tied on different types of line. Every situation is different.

Catch a big one this spring.

I run braid on everything - 50lb on all but frog rod (65lb there, and for spooks too) and senko rod (20lb, same for dropshot). all powerpro green. use the magic marker to help stiffen the line for spooks and frogs

I tie 3-4' leaders on for jigs and senko, 10' or so for cranks, and run a special setup with swivel for dropshot, but 2-3' leader there and 1/2 oz pencil weight at the end.

for the flouro leaders - 20lb lb for jig/swimbait, 12lb for cranks and sometimes 8lb (depends on the crank size), dropshot is 6lb. worms on 8 or 6lb - water clarity, cover, time of year dictate size for me. All line is Seaguar Invisi-x. Tony Pena knot for braid to leader connections

hope that helps somehow, I mostly backseat so versatility is important for me, ymmv

I too, back in the day was a big time Berkely Big Game fan. I still have many bulk spools that I now use for backing on my reels. This changed in 1997 when I was first introduced to Yamamoto's Sugoi Fluorocarbon. Today, I use 16-25# Stren, Sugoi & Trilene Fluoro on just about every rod I have except my topwater rods, to which I use a variety of Berkely braided line products.

Jigs- Trilene Flouro 17lb

Cranks - 15lb yozuri hybrid

finesse (t-rigs) - 40lb suffix braid

spinning rod (weightless senkos, wacky) - 30 lb power pro with a leader SOMETIMES.

Frog - 65lb power pro

I might step down to 12lb flouro for cranking, but I wouldn't go any lower than that out there.
