looking for a Loc-R-Bar or similar

Post by R watts »

I'm gonna be traveling across country and need some sort of locking device. Does anyone have any advice, one way or another, about the loc-r-bar system or anything like it. I need to get one and wanted some info on them.

Thanks Randy

Call Gene at the Hook, Line and Sinker at 925-625-2441. He carry's Loc-R-Bars and probably can give you other options. The LRB's run around $160.00.

I've used them on my last three boats, and wont order the boat with out one even again. Its the best piece of security you can add to your boat. Now guys are starting to add them to the back deck compartments also.
If you do get one, and are installing it yourself. Make sure that you know the measurements. You have to make sure the hole that the lock go through, are lined up. Some guys have done it and them have had to redrill the stainless steel bar to get the lock through.

Phillips Fishing Products also offers them - check out the new web site that I'm putting together for them @ www.phillipsfishingproducts.com/New

The site is still pretty raw, and I'm just getting to put the shopping cart together, but it lists most of the products.

I hope this is not in violation of rule #6 - just trying to answer the original question. Also, will try to influence Tom into advertising here once the site gets going. :D

Man I'm just not sure I want to drill more hole in my boat.and have a bar running across the deck.....It looks like you could still pry it up with crowbar if you really wanted to get into the compartments......Why don't they make it like a gun safe, turn the lock and bars inside the compartments lock it all up ??? Makes more sense to me, now that is something I would buy ...

The Loc-R-Bar, like most anti-theft devices can be defeated if someone wants in badly enough. I can even tell you one way to do it, but will refrain from putting it on a public forum. The idea is to discourage the thieves and send them to another target. I had one on my last boat and would probably put one on another if I planned to travel much. They cost is less than one rod and reel that you are proetecting and they are easy to install. I did mine myself. And that's right, it is scary to drill holes in your expensive fiberglass! If you are ordering a boat, check that option box if the cost is packed to badly. Until the boat makers build the lockers more securely, the Loc-R-Bar or similar is probably the best bet.

Randy,
I have a loc-r-bar that I never installed. If you are interested in it
I would sell it for $100 plus shipping expense. You can give me a call at 805-543-6282.

Re: looking for a Loc-R-Bar or similar - My Experience

I purchased a Loc-R-Bar and installed it on my Tr-20. Despite measuring several times, I didn't get it located correctly and when the lock was installed, there was about 3/4" of side to side play in it. Not happy with that situation, I looked for ways to shorten the bar so that the next set of holes would line up. I got that done very simply using a hacksaw with a bi-metal blade.

If I can hacksaw it into, any thief could do the same, so not overly impressed! The main value I see is that it is a deterrant to any would-be thief that doesn't want to spend a few minutes breaking in.

Also, I just put a new BassCat Puma on order. When I asked about Loc-R-Bars or similar security systems, the dealer advised against putting one on the BassCat, He said that BassCat and some other boat manufacturers run the boat wiring inside a PVC conduit that is located exactly where the Loc-R-Bar holes would have to be drilled. So, my new Puma will not have a Loc-R-Bar but will have an electronic security alarm!
