Re: Lunker Punker Jr. !!!!
I know a lot of guys are using braid. 25# maxima has been working just fine for me. I am gonna try some 65# braid this summer. Delta Shinner? Havent seen that one yet . It bet it looks good.

Re: Lunker Punker Jr. !!!!
Remember that braid typically floats and on a bait like the punker that walks sometimes the front split ring grabs the braid and fowls the bait. I would recomend mono for the punker just for that reason. If you dont mind reeling in your bait fowled more than you like then use the braid but if you dont use the 20 lb mono.

Re: Lunker Punker Jr. !!!!
That Delta Shinner is an AWESOME color! Use braid. A tip to keep the front hook from grabbing your line is......The night before you go fishing, hang your bait, then put a couple of drops of super glue about 10" up your line and let it run down to your knot. Let it dry over night. That will turn that 10" of line stiff and will stay out front of your bait. Dont forget to color about 10' of line black.

Nice tip Mike! thanks.
Will surely give it a try.
have you found that the glue does any damage to the braid?
making it brittle, easy to break?
Just curious.

I use 65lbs. Stren Super braid.
Re: Lunker Punker Jr. !!!!
excellent tips guys, I like mono so I think I'll try some 20lb CXX or maxima, will give a little and won't foul the hooks. Thanks a bunch. P.S. Delta Shiner is an awesome looking color......

Mike,
You ever try applying wax, like a fly fisherman might use, or surf board wax? Just thinking it might be doable on the water vs. the glue.

I have not. Let me know how it works out. It might make your line sink, if it does, the bait wont work rightkopper_bass wrote:Mike,

Re: Lunker Punker Jr. !!!!
Throw the 65# Powerpro braid, but with a flouro leader. Shock/cut resistant and stealthy. Also try soldering the split rings closed on your spooks and punkers so the line does not foul, but throw the braid. I resisted braid, but I forget about line nowadays.

Re: Lunker Punker Jr. !!!!
I tossed it last year on #65 and would get alot of frontal hooks with the line on working it back.
On MaH BrothA's recomdation -- I switched to #80 PowerPro (witch is stiffer) and it was alot better .... And changed the front hook with a pair of dykes.
There are many ways to play with that bait to tune it to yourself. It is not just a piece of wood in any was and I am so looking foreward to the topwater bite to spring foreward !

Re: Lunker Punker Jr. !!!!
I've been using bees wax on braid for a year or so. It works well for all types of top water baits. It keeps the line a float and not so stiff. You will foul less but it's not foul free on top. I carry a small block of wax with my terminal tackle.

Re: Lunker Punker Jr. !!!!
I have used the lunker punker alot, and have tryed all sorts of line. The best by far is 30 pound mono. Braids to limp and your bait will hang up to much, and floro will sink and cause your bait to dive down and pop up. Use a loop knot so when it walks one way it helps it walk back. Do not use glue because you will lose action it will pull from the front of the bait, and not the side, thats why you use a loop knot.

Re: Lunker Punker Jr. !!!!
P.S. The whole key to not fouling your punker on the retrieve regardless of line type is to properly control the slack in your line. As with all topwaters they will foul from time to time. But really focusing on your cadence is key. Describing it with words is tough but we will have a video primer on our site sometime in the near future!

Re: Lunker Punker Jr. !!!!
Tin Can,
What most guys do when throwing braid is to take a big fathead permanent marker (bladk) and cut a slot in the felt tip. then they run it up and down the line from the bait up (say 10ft). this takes the normally green or colored line and makes it black so its less noticiable. As you know, the more you use braid, the more it gets shiny, white, looking, so this just knocks the color off of it and makes it less noticable.
You could use other colors too if you chose.
