Lead color
Actually if you dip your jig heads in a liquid rubber paint it wont come off. They sell it at home Depot. Its for insulating handles of tools to avoid electrical shock. Has worked for me, but I usually lose my jigs in rocks faster than paint is an issue.

Bobby D's baits are all powder coated and will not chip. You can get them @ The Hook Line & Sinker (925-625-2441)

Re: LURES AND BAITS JIGS THAT DO NOT CHIP
You show me a jig that is not chipped after fishing rocks.I will then show you a person who dont know how to fish a jig correctly.Every one that i have seen fished with or built has chipped after fishing in the rocks. Not all right away but fished right it will chip.Just my experience in jigs.
Re: LURES AND BAITS JIGS THAT DO NOT CHIP
Send them to me, I will test them all and declare a winner of the jig off!

Re: LURES AND BAITS JIGS THAT DO NOT CHIP
Bake them....they will last longer, but all jigs chip after enough use.

Unpainted jigsI dont mean to sound rude but when somebody say they wont chip or scratch ive been making jigs a long time and they do no matter how hard to try to prevent it form happening.

I'm with Greg on this one, the unpainted ones don't chip, but they do get scratches..

Re: LURES AND BAITS JIGS THAT DO NOT CHIP
I never said they wouldnt scratch! I have a bunch with teeth marks all over them
But I have fished the same jig for 100 hours with out a chip in it. But that is fishing the delta and I dont flip many rocks. Bobby does bake them in the oven and I have thrown them down on the cement and the led will flatten out with out the paint falling off.

Mike,
Try it in the Mother Lode. I'm sure the jigs are great, but these rocks are brutal.

All jigs chip......plain and simple....from TnT to Bobby D to Revenge to Persuader to .........
If you are fishing them where you should hey are gonna chip......end of story.
If you are fishing them where you should hey are gonna chip......end of story.
Oh there is indeed a bottom line here....
In time, they all chip!
As Mark mentions, there is a special process along with special ingrediants that can be used with powder painting, that will out perform and last longer than any other process. It's very time consuming, and not a process used by the mass producing companies. The local hand tying guys, take the time and put the extra effort into their process to assure a harder coating on their jigs. I can say with certainty, that Mark, Bobby, Trocye and Daryl Boyce(No longer making jigs), all use a variation of this process that provide a longer lasting paint job on their jig heads.
I will also say this, paint chipping away is not always a bad thing! Infact, there are times when I feel a worn off head, especially on the bottom side of the jig, will cause a slight flash under high light conditions, that will trigger strikes and git ya more bites. Many times I love a jig that I've been using fer 4 weeks, that has the paint worn off the bottom! And I will cringe when I loose it and have to tie another one on and wait fer 4 weeks before it gits good and seasoned! HAR!
I also prefer using an unpainter football head when I'm tossing a Yamamoto Hula grub on the One Ton rig. I do use painted ones at times, but I feel there are more reaction strikes to be had with a One Ton and that silver flash will trigger more strikes on an unpainted head, versus a painted head most of the time. Most of the time I'm fishing a jig as a reaction bait. I fish it fast, erratic and at times pop it violently, doing this, I don't think a bass cares if it's fully painted or not. The bass triggers so fast out of agression, their brain is not processing if it's painted or not. Dead sticking a jig in a very clear water conditions, is a whole different story, that bass could be looking at that bait fer 15-60 seconds. He has the time to analyze it long enough to make a decission if it looks real or not.

Instead of worrying about the paint chipping, carry some Sharpies in assorted colors, and touch up the chips, if you think it's that important.

Re: Oh there is indeed a bottom line here....
I have painted a few jig heads with that rubber paint and it does not come off. When I am not fishing at home I throw those jigs at the dumpster ducks pecking stuff off the pavement in front of the house. Then drag it across the pavement and cast again. I have broken the eye off the jig doing this but that rubber paint stays on. But I think the rubber might make the jig not make as much noise in the water hitting rocks. And I think a lead colored jig head will work just the same as a colored one anyway.

Re: Oh there is indeed a bottom line here....
The rubber or plastisol plastic tool coating does seem to hold up to rock abrasions. But as my jig guru Gordon Spencer (founder of Rodstrainer Tackle) mentioned....those coatings may dampen the desired clicking sounds that you get from non-coated jigs as they bang across the rocks. So I prefer the painted heads.

Re: LURES AND BAITS JIGS THAT DO NOT CHIP
I have been pouring and painting my own jigs for years. I use a two part epoxy flex paint. First coat, the color coat (black, Brown, White, etc;). after three days of curing. I apply three coats of clear two part epoxy flex paint, letting each coating cure before applying the next. I hang the jigs by the hook this allows a thicker build up on the front of the jig head. This really works the best for me. The jig will retain it's coating for quite a while (months in most cases). If you hit rip rap hard at the waters edge you will lose the finish faster.

Re: Oh there is indeed a bottom line here....
caudawg, thats what I am saying. I think the rubber holds up better. But it doesnt get hit as much without it smacking the rocks and making some noise. I just use them till I lose them, and dont pay any attention to the paint. I check the trailer and make sure its sharp, other than that I keep it in the water instead of crying about paint. You cant catch fish if your confidence is shot worrying about trivial crap. People have been catching fish for thousands of years without the paint or bajo minnow. But one thing we can all agree on is you aint gunna catch a thing without your line in the water. On that note, Im gunna play sick leave work and take off for the weekend. Im gunna go play with salmon and striper with this weather that came in.
