Launched out of Mossdale Landing last weekend with a buddy and did pretty well. I usually fish for black bass but my buddy is into striper, so we went out trying to get both. Cruised up to the split and snagged a couple striper and lost what would have been a really nice one on a frog. Had him hooked but my drag was too loose for striper, he pulled me into the weeds and got off. To rub it in my buddy says, “that would have been a nice one to pull in as your first striper on a frog." Sat there determined to get that fish back and nothin'. Took the split towards stockton and hooked into about 5 or 6 each with a mix of both striper and black bass. My buddy pretty muted used a spook all day and I hit them on a frog, square bill and spinnerbait. Sun came out and the tide was slack and that killed the fishing. On the way back in we stopped at the split again just for one more try. Nothing.
Fast forward to yesterday. All I’ve been thinking about is that damn striper. Decided we’d go out and play in the nasty weather and drove over to Tracy Oasis and hit the Grant Line Canal and then head over by the Clifton Court Forebay. Saw a little top water action by the bridge to the east but nothing would bite. Then made our way west stopping here and there, no bites. As we’re making our way west we run into a wall of hyacinth blocking the entire canal. Again saw a little top water action by all of this mess but nothing would bite. Still thinking about that damn striper. Stop in for a burger as Tracy Oasis and we headed back east past the bridge and fished until an hour after dark. Got skunked. I really need to make up for losing that nice striper.
