mussels

Post by clayton meyer »

At the FLW meeting an official Ranger/Biologist/Govt. guy told us to expect a boat inspection when crossing back into California and we should all be very receptive and cooperative... as I would be to anyone that wanted to clean my boat for me.

Coming back from Havaclue I was expecting to be strip searched and probed for mussels. When I came to the check point there was not a soul in sight. Maybe he was checking for mussels elsewhere.

I did see a canister vacuum cleaner on the side and suspect it could be used for pulling the final drops of water out of a livewell if needed.

When I returned home I cleaned my boat. I won't be fishing for a number of days so my boat should dry out fairly well.

I wonder about the trailer pads. You can't clean them with a boat on top and these little critters would probably live longer in the trapped moisture than in any other part of the boat other than a full livewell.

Are we looking at a local disaster a decade from now or is this a case of "only look at the dark side"

I saw the picture of the crawdad or whatever it was, but how much damage has been done in other waters due to these mussels. post more sites if you have them

If the Govt. isn't going to man the roads, they must not have the idea yet that this is a serious problem... or maybe what is the point since they can't stop the flow of water on the mussel highway.

I understood the ranger believed the mussels most likely traveled along with a boat stored in the water, having allowed it to aquire attached mussel in an adult form able to stay alive longer.

Time to get on with the Stren Recruiting

I was checked when I entered back in to Cali. They looked in my livewells and made sure that my drain plug was open in the boat.

I was checked also.
I showed them my beach bottle and what I had done.
Took 2-3 minutes and off I was.
