Need 7to1 H/S Bait Caster, Excellent Quality, Under $100.00

Post by Guy Kelley »

Finaly figured out that some of the problem I have with hook setting is I have not enough time to react to fish, with to much line bow between fish and Rod/Reel.

i think that in order to improve hook set ratio that a High speed reel would improve my hook setting abilities by allowing me to take up the slack quicker at the bight ? I have been using old citca 5 to 1 mostly with a couple of 6 to 1 shimmanos supper free's thrown in as well.

I would like to be able too use braid with floro leader or just braid for frog fish as well as jig or Carolina rigs as well.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks

Guy - The Shimano Curado E7 is a kickarse reel for $20 less than the Revo STX.

If the STX was the same price as the E7 - I would stick to the STX ... But for $20 less I would again take another (I now have three) E7 Curado and buy a bag of Hammers and 2 bottles of Pork for the price of the STX.
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

Dont laugh....the BPS Rick Clunn reel w/ 7.1:1 ratio. I've had one for about 2 years, and so has a friend. It's one of my favorite reels, and I fish it alongside a Chronarch B, Curado E, etc. Troublefree and casts VERY well. They are usually on sale well under $100!!

Try the Quantum Energy E770PT burner (7.0:1). They list for around $190, but I've bought a several brand new ones on eBay for around $80.

Guys; Please explain to me why 7:1 reel ?? Does it stilkl have the power to crank a big bait or a big fish. All the high speed reels I have used, I have always went back to 5:1 or 6:1 at the most ?

Jigs (why the speed)

Only rod I use a high speed retrieve reel on is my frog rod. That way I can crank em out of the thick stuff quickly. I am using the Quantum Burner and love it for that application.

The hgher the speed, the lower the cranking power, and vice versa. Lower gear ratios are great for winching the fish to the boat, as well as for cranking, and you give up much power with the higher-ratio reels.

That being said, in your case you are probably making a good decision, as the higher gear ratios take up line much quicker. You can also make up for that, to a certain extent, by using reels with a larger spool... not sure what you've been using, but that might also be a viable alternative? The larger the diameter of spool, the more line retrieved per handle crank (all other things being equal).

Rod length and style plays heavily into this, as the longer rod can move more line per amount of effort made during the hookset (obviously). If the rod has a fast taper, the tip shuts down quickly and allows the main shaft to do its job. If you're using a rod with a parabolic action, it doesn't transfer the power to the bait as quickly, but will absorb the energy and cushion the shock... that's why they are a pretty good choice for cranks and topwaters, as they have a bit of a built-in delay.

Related, the method of hookset comes into play. Depending on factors such as hook type and size, line angle, distance, bait type, rod, etc., the direction and style of hookset makes a big difference. The less angle, the more upward the hookset needs to drive. The more angle, the more it needs to be parallel to the water. Equally important is the style - sweep-set as opposed to violent rip. The more you turn your body with a sweep (and whether you're turning the handle crank), the more line you move.

Another part of the equation, aside from raw distance factors, is line type. Braid has nearly zero stretch, flourocarbon has little stretch (and nearly zero memory, so once stretched out it doesn't rebound and in effect has nearly zero stretch also), and mono has significant stretch. I'm sure you know this, and presume you're probably using flouro for your application, so this probably doesn't factor in to your particular situation.

All really obvious information, but posted here in case someone hasn't given all these factors consideration. Forgive me if I've overstated the obvious!

Hey Guy, there are several 7:1 reels out there for under $100. I have a Bass Pro Extreme that I use for SpeedTraps and ripping, it seems to be a solid reel...$79.99, you might be able to pick one up at the Hook, or Gene could order one for you, I think they are an authorized BassPro dealer. Also, the Browning Citori is right at $100, and the Pflueger Cetina is $89.95. The Team Daiwa Megaforce is $59.95, and it has the "Twitchin Bar". Best bet is talk to folks that have used these reels, maybe get them to let you try it out and go from there... Good Luck.
