Old lures for us more mature fihsermen

Post by mac (Doyle McEwen) »

Just curious how many of us that have been chasing bass for over 30 years are still using the baits we first started with or are still fishing with those we caught our first bass on..I remember catching my first bass on a pre-rigged Creme worm, you know the one with a three hook harness and the beads and prop in front..I would love to find some and try them now..I stll have some old HulaPoppers and TinyTorpedoes as well as some JitterBugs and MudBugs..I will admit I rarely tie them on now..Sometimes I wonder why, they caught bass back then, wouldn't they still catch bass now..

I think I remember seeing a pre-rigged purple creme worm with prop and beads at Wal-Mart the other day. How would you fish those? Carolina?

Mac, I had the some thought a couple of weeks ago while I was working on my gear. The old stuff will probably work great since the bass of this era have never seen them.

When I was a teen in the mid-60's, I use to catch a ton of fish on Sonics, Bombers, Mirro-lures, and Mepps spinners. I still have a tackle box full of lures from the 60's-70's but haven't open the box in years.

Life was simple back then....

--Had one rod and a Garcia Mitchell reel filled with 15lb mono that I bought from Thrifty Drug Store for less than $50 and used for all types of fishing. Nowadays, I have 10+ outfits (cost $400-$500 each) with each outfit rigged for a specific purpose.
--Never worried about the condition of my line. Back then, I used the same line for years. Nowadays, I change out the line on each reel at least once every year.
--Had only a handful of lures and usually 1 of each lure. If I lost a particular lure, I was out of luck for the day until I bought another one. Nowadays, I go out with a boat full of lures and at least 2 of each lure.
--Used lures with the stock hooks straight out of box. Nowadays, I change out hooks and split rings on all my lures before they even touch water.
--When I wanted to fish, I grabbed the rod, jumped into the car, and was going down the road in minutes. Nowadays I spend an hour or two getting ready to go fishing.
--Didn't have a boat so I fished from the bank. Nowadays, I can't remember the last time I fished from the bank. Last year, I decided to check out some of the spots that I fished as a teen. All of the areas were now posted with No Trespassing signs, overgrown with weeds, or not accessible.

It will be interesting to see what the young fishermen of this era will say in 40 years.

I still have alot of my old tackle from the late 60's early 70's. I used 2 rod and reel combo's back in the day and still have both. For a spinning rig I had the Mitchell 300 on the first Berkley Lightning rod. For the baitcaster it was the Ambasaduer 5000 on a Lews Fuji "Speed Stick". The 5000 was mostly used for the homemade football head jigs with pork, deep plastics, and large crankbaits like Bombers and Waterdogs. The Mitchell was used for most everything else like shallow plastics, smaller cranks like Sonics, topwater, and live bait. I was looking through the garage the other day and I still have 30+ jars of "Pedigo pork" and "Uncle Josh" pork, hundreds of the original Manns Jelly worms in about a dozen flavors, Several unopened packs of the straight 6" cream worms, and all of my dads jig ang spinnerbait making items. I still have 8 red Ambassaduer 5000's and 1 black 5000C from the 70's, an old Lawrence Green Box that was used twice,(it still is in the box with all paperwork and warrentee papers), an original Color Selector, and all kinds of other old fishing crap.
Maybe it's Ebay time!!

Kinda funny to read this post. I recently tied on an old tiny torpedo I've carried in my boxes for 25 years and managed to land 8 bass to 3 1/2lbs. I've got a lot of old lures that I fish every once in a while, and they all seem to catch fish. I think some of the guys are right... this generation of bass have never seen some of the stuff we pounded fish on many years ago. I still remember the first time I tied on a jig and pig when I was fishing with one of my long time best friends back in 1982. He handed it to me (Black weapon with a electric blue #11 pork) I thought what the hell is going to eat this  Well after nearly 25 bass that day on the Sutter bypass I was hooked. I've been chasing them every since, and it's funny how you can tear them up by going old school with flipping or the old ring worms and such...

I fished a Hula Popper for OTS alongside Lion Killer while he out-fish my 3 to 1 with a Spook it was still very gratifying to finally get one on the old lure., The year before I got a few on the Jitterbug along Ciago Del Lago

There are a ton of older lures that would probably still catch fish..The Shannon Twin Spin, Snagless Sally and Hawaiian Wigler to name a few..I used all three of these for hears, But honestly I can't remember catching fish on them..I do know I lost my last Snagless Sally on a snag, so I never bothered replacing it..I have always wondered how some of these baits would fare under current fishing conditions..

My first semi-lunker was on a Bomber 400 series in white coach dog on a 51/2' lunkerstik and a red Ambassadeur 5000. 7-14 at El Capitan walking the bank. April 1972.

As a very small child back in the 50's-60's (LOL) I had Hawaiian Wigglers, Jitterbugs, Sonic, Tiny Torpedo, Tiny Pumpkinseed, but the Bomber was da bomb. Bayou Boogie, Waterdogs, Hellbenders, Lucky 13's (still have one). Lazy Ike, Flatfish.

There was a pre-rigged jighead with a black plastic eel that worked but I can't remember the name.

If you're from SoCal you remember the DeLong worms in Otay Special color. And Lindy worms in black grape.

Dang, I'm ancient.

Wow...this brings back memories. I used to fish the Balsa B, the larger sized one in chartreuse color at Cachuma just on the backside of the island and caught some nice fish there. That would have been back in the mid '70s. My personal favorite was the Lucky 13 with a red head and honeycomb colored body. Still use it occassionally when fishing at the river. Also still use the Devils Horse at the river.

This subject is near and dear to my heart. My hobby is collecting old lures and tackle. I still fish with some of it, lots of it I display at expos and seminars. Still have stuff my Dad fished with back in the 1930's and some of my oldest go back to the late 1890's.

Some of the Bagleys are getting very collectible as well as original Castiac Swim Baits.

My boys and I used to absolutely slay the Bass at Lake Amador and when other fisherman would bug us about what we were using, we would tell them, "Purple Sit on its." Just go up to the lodge and insist they get one from under the counter and sell it to you. Don't take no for an answer. LOLOLOL

Still use big ol black Jitterbugs along the Tulle edges on a moonless night.

There were other variations that dove deeper. Also made a Bang-O-Lure jerkbait.

My first lure bass was on a Rapala floater. I also used the countdown. 28 years ago or so.

Lucky 13's (red head white body)!! I actually put a few in my Delta box last year and caught a few fish on them. Great bait, even swimming them works well. And then theres the old Manns augertail. I loved swimming that worm weightless as a kid and Im convinced that would still work today, especially on Clear Lake and the Delta. Devils horse was mentioned, I thought that was only a Florida bait! And who out there throws a snagless sally? One last bait I never see out here, and I threaten every year to start throwing it on the Delta, is the Johnson spoon with a pork strip attached. Ah, the memories.....
