OROVILLE CA. – Weather is not the only thing warming up for northern California anglers, but also the race for the coveted Ram Trucks “Guts and Glory” Angler of the Year award presented to the team that stays the most consistent over the Future Pro Tour's 5-event season.

Leading the charge wtih this weekend’s event approaching, is the father-and-son team of Kevin and Kirby Wallace, veteran FPT anglers, who feel that their time has finally come to win the coveted award they have spent many years trying to obtain, as they came out “swinging” at the tour’s season opener with a dominant performance at the California delta.

“We were disappointed that Berryessa was cancelled at the last moment”, noted Kevin and Kirby, but to win the Angler of the Year crown in this tour, you not only have to be consistent, but also ready for unforeseen changes that may occur. So when the delta venue change was announced we simply shifted our focus, got out our heavy gear, and adjusted to a “different” body of water.

We have been told over the years by many top pros, that learning to “pivot” is an essential part of developing and refining your angling skills”, they added.

And this Lake Oroville event is not only significant for the 2021 AOY race, but also for those who missed the first event of the year, as it represents the last chance to complete the 4 out of 5 events requirement needed to qualify for the 2021 FPT Classic championship, where the keys to a new boat will be awarded to the 19th pair of FPT Classic champions.

Youth Angler’s League AOY race underway!

The Youth Angler’s League presented by Gone Fishin’ Marine, River2Sea, and Daiwa, is also underway as youth from 5 to 18 years old get the opportunity to - FOR NO ENTRY FEE, develop their angling skills against youth within their same age group, to win guaranteed cash for the top three places, as well as customized awards for their efforts.

Leading the charge in the Youth Angler League’s “Kid’s Division” (for ages 5-11) is James “freshly faded” Dammann, who winning top honors in the 2020 FPT Youth championship, is also looking to capture a AOY title in the Kids division.

In the Youth Angler League’s “Youth Division” (for ages 12-18), Timothy Albrecht also leads the way on the strength of a top performance at the tour’s season opener on the California delta. Tim who incidentally fishes as a “team” with his dad, can also boast that he has helped them make it to the FPT Classic championship for two consecutive years, and was also the runner-up in the 2020 Youth Angler League Championship.

Oroville is ready to go….so we hope to see you all – as well as our youth, at the Bidwell Marina ramp bright this Saturday morning, where limited memberships of just $10 will be available for those that can only fish one event.

See you there!

Good luck to all of our youth!
