Getting my rods to Stren Lake Mead?HELP!!

Post by fishfan »

The bazooka tube with my rods in it is 84" and the airport only allows up to 80" items. Does any ony have any suggestions or is anyone from between Chico and Sacramento driving their and could help out? I have no problem giving someone some cash for transport!

Thanks Jeff H.

FishFan,

I would try first calling Fed X or UPS and see what they can do. Then call the place were you are staying and ask if they Receive deliveries.
Figure for the time of travel and make it happen.
Good Luck man, hope things work out.

Must be the airport. I have never had any problems, when I was fishing as a co-angler, flying with my bazooka rod tube out of Sacramento or any airport for that matter.

Most of my rods are 7 footers so the tube is over 84" long...probably closer to 90" with rods in it.

I would call the airline you are flying on and double check. Make sure to tell them they are fishing rods. I did this and they would usually exempt me from the additional piece of luggage fee as well.

Good Luck!

It is the sac airport! I called and e-mailed and the responce was the same, over 80" and they will not do it! I guess I could go out and buy all new rods that are shorter!LOL.

Thanks Jeff H.

They'll do it on Southwest but it will cost you some major dough. I would suggest shipping them or finding someone who is driving.

They were going to charge an extra $100 bucks.

Well, is anyone from the Chico area going to Mead? If so pick up the man's rods :)

Another idea is UPS them to someone you know is going and they can drive them.

Good luck!

you might ask about oversized baggage. i have flown with mine to Japan a few times with no problems. I see big surgboards on planes all the time. I don't think they will turn it down.

I have had to pay 55 extra dollars to take my rods with me....I had an 8 footer, as well as the other 3 around 7. They werent even going to allow it, but it was my only option so they made an exception.

Last time I flew to Vegas, I flew America West. Had my rods and tackle bag as well as luggage.

I remember that disclaimer on their website, called them and explained they were fishing rods and that was the only way I could transport them and they said "OK"

It's an airport... don't use the word Bazooka. It is on the list of restricted items.

Call the hotel you are staying at, tell them you are shipping your rods to there hotel. Get the persons name who you have talked to. Go to UPS or Fed EX and ship-em. They will be waiting for you in the lobby when you get there.
Getting them home. Once you find out when your leaving. Make the cut or not, call the night berore and tell them to pick-em up. Cost a little more for shiping, since they pick-up. I have done this many times and have never had a problem.
The last time I did this my buddy took his on the plane, and when we arrived in Texas. the airline did a check of his tube, with-out us there and snapped 4 out of 9 rod tips. Ship-em hope this helps.

Take it to the airlines freight (cargo) office...If your airline doesnt do it, another will.... there has to be at least one out of Sac... they will take it.... I used to ship large heavy stuff from Reno To Vegas all the time when I was building prototype surveillance systems for one of the casinos... you can send it a day ahead of you, it will be there waiting when you get there... . little more work, but guaranteed....I always used Southwest Cargo...

Hope this helps...
