Who was your first Sponsor and...

Post by Ralph_198 »

How did you approach them? Did you know your sponsor on a personal level prior to sponsorship? What do you do for your sponsor besides tournament exposure? Thanks.

My First sponsor was Tournament Lures out of Oroville. It was my freshman year in college and I was doing fairly well fishing as a nonboater and they picked me up when I was at the right place at the right time.

Man I miss that company.

Hey Ralph, the most important thing you can do in this sport and in life in general is keep a good reputation. You are only as good as your word no matter how good a fisherman you are. Being a good fisherman helps when trying to attract sponsors, but the most important quality is being marketable, likeable, and positive. People buy from those they like and sponsors know that. Don't be shy to introduce yourself and always network. Good luck Ralph.

Quantum was my first sponsor.

Jack from Fisherman's Access told them about me. I was an avid Quantum user and pretty gung-ho for the Bass thing. I was still a newby in the sport but, Jack knew my enthusiasm and personability would be good for Quantum. I set up a meeting with Vic Romano - the Quantum Rep for the West coast and it went from there. This was before I worked for Bass West.

Although, they want tournament exposure, I think they mostly want someone who will promote their product. Someone who others believe and trust their opinion. Someone who is willing to go into tackle shops when they are in the area and ask them how their product is doing and if there are any questions that can be answered.

Here is a list of what I do for them
1. I fish the product and provide feedback on the qualities and drawbacks of the products. If there is a problem, I bring it to their attention and offer alternatives to fix the problem (if I have any).
2. When people ask, I tell them about the product. Its benefits, costs and more. I even lend out my gear to those who may be interested in carrying the product or purchasing some of the product.
3. I stop by tackle stores when I am in the area and see if they carry Quantum. If not I tell them about the product and give them Vic's card. If so, I ask about the sales and support of the product and if there are any problems with either. If there are problems I get in touch with Vic and let him know, and he handles that directly.
4. I work the shows for Quantum
5. I help Vic with ideas for for getting Quantum more exposure to anglers - press, samples etc.
6. I added Quantum to my website and I mention it in any media I get... with the exception of in Bass West. They do get treated the same as all their competitors in Bass West.

Obviously, sponsors that pay anglers for their partnership, generally get more in the way of a Wrapped Vehicle or Wrapped Boat, primary shirt logo and more.

and I'll add a few more. Granted most of what your sponsor wants out of you should be spelled out that way you'll know what's expected. You are a professional representative of the company. Prostaff = promote, Salesmen = sell.

One of the most important things that sponsors want are for their team to fill out quarterly reports and list what was done to promote the product. This includes:
- Visiting stores and doing a mental inventory (Face time is key)
- Handing out an occasional sample
- Visiting bass clubs
- Mentioning the product on Internet bass chat forums (without over doing it)
- Meet the Pro demos (bass tank)
- Working tackle shows
- Press, press, press! Simple articles online, newsletters, major magazines (homerun)
- Tourney participation (Placing in the money helps)
~~ I'm trying to think but nothing happens ~~

My first sponsor was Vans Skate shoes. I started whooping on everyone that had a factory ride so they took the first shot at me. I got a call on the phone. Dont really know how they got my number but when your wanted they find a way. Next came Redline, GT, then Hoffman Bikes. Then came the broken in half leg, broken jaw and 2 knee surgeries. Quick career let me tell ya. Non fishing related but you didnt say it had to be.

Crap - I am an old man now!

That is where it all started for me too. I raced for DG and GT in 76-77-78 (Damn I am old)... Don't have a bike anymore except for a Mtn. Bike.... but, I wouldn't want to race you anyway! ha ha ha

I was training 4 or 5 days a week at 7 years old, my dad would settle for no less than a win! However, I got a lot of great dinners out of it when I did win... I used to go to Anthony's Fish Grotto is San Diego anytime I was down in San Diego and won.. I raced from San Diego, Orange County, all the way to Oklahoma City and lots of places in between.

Every heard of any of these guys? Mike King, Stu Thompson, Tinker Jaurez (Olympian in 92).... Mike Horton, Gary Fisher, Perry Klein (Pk Ripper)

I remember Mike Horton, how about Greg Hill (Red Line), remember him? I spent alot of time in Van Nuys and Devonshire downs. My cousin broke his collor (sp) bone at Norco. Oh ya those were the good ol days.

Stu used to race for Mongoos then went with Huffy. I remember that guy riding down the slop of his roof and landing on the ground, nuts!!!

Bob Haro started by making number plates with lightning bolts and he had a great comic strip

Roger I remember Bultaco's, remember Bob Hanna?

Well its a good thing Paul stopped riding, he makes a better fisherman than BMX racer or dirt jumper lol, that kid would be dead if he still rode BMX. He has had so many broken bones, jaws, had so many surgeries, has titanium rods in his legs and crap, He has no limits and does what needs to be done to win. He has balls of steal and I wouldnt be caught dead doing some of the crap he can do on a bike. Crazy Kids !!!!! Bike arent made to do flips and crap, both wheels should be kept on the ground for me hahahaha
as far as my first sponsor, well it would have to be my Dad !

Mike Horton was my best friend while racing and travel partner. Either he or I won pretty much every race. There was one other guy to.... I can't remember his name, David McDonald or something that was pretty quick too!

After, I left racing for more conventional sports (football, baseball, basketball) he kept going and made quite a bit of money racing! He had a cute sister too! I think her name was Karen...

Mike King, I raced against a lot.... he was quick, but me and Horton owned him at that age.

Stu Thompson was quite a bit older than us.

Tinker Juarez I knew really well - he was the orginial "gold teeth - grill master" at the age of like 15!!

Tracks I remember -
There was a grass track in Norwalk - Anyone remember that track?

Bakersfield held the winternationals once.

Snipes park in Norco was all downhill... and fun!

Azusa had a bicycle track but, the competition was weak there. Motorcycle track next door.

Corona was the fastest track anywhere with a huge downhill - I think they tore that track down in the early 80's. Has houses on it now. Used to be a motorcycle track right next to it.

Hey this is a fishing forum! but, its good to try and jog the memory for all the old school stuff. I might have to crack into my parents storage when I get home. I bet those huge trophies I remember aren't really all that big.... "How does it go, the older I get the better I was" Maybe I should just leave those alone and let my legend live on in my head - as is! ha ha ha

Think I will keep the name of my first sponsor confidential. Was never a equitable arrangement, he always took way more than he gave. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth and they never get any mention from me anymore.

All that being said, how that sponsorship was obtained is relevant for others. Won a tournament on the baits and had been a good customer and promotor of the baits for quite some time before hand. After the win I went to them, told them about the win and asked to be sponsored. Not a whole lot too it.

All you ever have to know about ANY sponsor is this. They generally don't give a rat's *** about how good you fish. they care about how well you sell product. If you aren't willing to do that, then you can just forget it.

Pitchin' a sponsorship to someone by saying "we will tell everyone we won with your baits when we win" is almost universally worthless. They have heard it a thousand times before and unless you are Gary Dobyns or Aaron Martens, it means nothing to them.

There are some legendary fishermen out there who didn't get a 10th as far in the industry as they could have because they never understood that concept and were not willing to promote and sell. They think that all they should have to do is say, "Caught them on ..., " flash a smile and that is it. For that service they want to be paid big bucks. Not the way it works folks! There are also some very famous fishermen who in all reallity have limited fishing skills, but have big names for themselves and successful careers because they represent products and can sell.

Want sponsorship? Start thinking like a lure manufacturer and a businessman. You have a limited budget and have to be careful how you spend money. Who do you want representing your products? are they neat? Likeable? Do they talk with fellow fishermen and the general public? How many baits can they help me sell and where? These are the things that get you sponsorship.

Fishing differs from the Shooting sports. My main Sponsor was Springfeild Armory and I seeked them out, simply because I didnt want to shoot a Colt firearm. I was using Earnie Hill holsters when Safariland came up to me, later Winchester, Don Keho (gunsmith) and Surefire all approched me. I dont think they were concerned with my ability to sell the their product. I think they just wanted select shooters to spread an image of what the best people use. I was hardly ever asked about the product I used.

I raced for many years, Bryan Ruest, Mike King, Matt Hadan, Steve Veltman, Mark Perez and yes Cheri Elliott (probably the fastest girl on the planet back then). Never had the factory ride, but did make a lot of main events in the expert class. Placed 4th one year, the only privateer in the bunch.

Ah, I was 15 years old and Bruce McDonald got me hooked up with Quantum,Silver Thread and motorguide!

Quantum gave me I think it was 5 rods and reels and the rest were like 30 bucks each, Something ridiclous cheap price and all the line I needed.

It was a great deal. I owed it all to good ole John Shaver!! He was my mentor when I was first starting out!

Post by Pete Marino »

Pomona Valley Kawasaki when I was 13. I used to go into the shop EVERYDAY during the summers when I was 8-13. I'd ride my bike down to the shop in the morning and help them push the bikes out to the front of the shop when they opened. I'd go into the office and sit down and talk bikes to the owner, Ralph Whitlinger for hours.
Finally Ralph told me he'd sell me a KX 80 for a discounted price and I'd be on the team. I had to go to meetings once a month. I wasnt very good at the time. In fact I was by far the slowest guy on the team but I was so proud to put on that Pomona Valley Kawasaki jersey. And learn from the likes of Tommy Coombs in the early days all the way to Jeremy Albreit (spelling), Joel Albreit (spelling) and Jeremy McGrath before his Pro Circuit days. I rode with PVK till I was 19. When I decided to sell the highly Modified KX 125 I was riding at the time and move to the 250 class.
During those years with Pomona Valley Kawasaki I got smoked on a weekly basis but learned and learned. The results were never great. A good weekend for me was 3-5 for 4th place or 4-4 for 3rd place if I got lucky. That didnt matter because I was wearing that PVK jersey and I was proud. In 1989-90 I got sponsors by Suzuki Country in Norco. Discounts, and no real incentives...but I finally started winning and thats when I got sponsored by Scott Goggles USA and got goggles for extremely cheap prices. Suspension by Jake, Renthal Bars, GFI racing, Power Bar, Answer Gear, and AXO boots soon folowed with big discounts on everything.
Then as I advanced through the ranks, Noleen Racing, Pro Circuit Racing, Fox Racing, VP Race fuels, Oakley, and a few others helped out alot along the way. But nothing ever compared to the first time I put on that Pomona Valley Kawasaki jersey... It was a proud moment in my life. :D
For all you old schoolers, I know Charlie is one and will remember but do you remember.....Mark Barnett, Johnny"O, David Baily, Goat Brecker, Magoo, even earlier...Marty Smith, Hannah, Tripes, Howerton,?
I am a complete fanatic with motocross trivia. If there is a motocross trivia question I can usually answer it. I've never known someone that answer as many ?'s as I can. From 1972 to present day. From Motocross to Supercross..even the Trophe Des Nations and Motocross De Nations Team USA stuff. I love it all.....
Once a motocross fanatic/throttle head ALWAYS a fanatic/throttle head. Right Charlie Strong???

As far as bmx... one of my really good friends when I was 12-14 was factory JMC expert rider Carl Butler. He would always have to miss school because of Nationals and he'd always let me race his bikes. I always sucked though...I think the best I ever did was one 1st place in the 13 novice class because everyone but me crashed...hahahaha  but that was cool. I was too into racing around a track and turning the throttle than I was peddling around the track. So I never got serious with it.
As far as fishing goes my first sponsor was Suicide Jigs. In 1998 I think it was I fished my 3rd tournament ever and Mike Phua told me to use a suicide Jig at the Silverwood tournament that coming weekend. I remember it vividly... there were 80+ teams that day and Mike Lillebridge won the tournament with about 17lbs. I finished 10th and cashed a check. Very few limits were caught that day and I had one of them. All on the suicide jigs...In fact Phua had a bad tournament that day and only caught 2-3 fish and he made that comment in the parking lot that even I beat him. (I was new so I didnt mind the dig) 8) 8)
From that day on I used suicide jigs anytime I threw Jigs. I approached Bill Ponting and he gave me a jig sponsor for 50% off jigs. I was pretty happy. And have went on to win alot of events on the Suicide Jig. :D
My next sponsor was Hot Sauce/Edge products. I approached Ron about a sponsor and he said okay so since that day I've gotten all my product for free. I help him out at Fred Hall when its in town or sometimes the bassathon but manly I've always promoted his products at the lakes.
My current sponsors are
Hot Sauce ...all free product
Maxima Line...all free product
Skeeter/Yamaha.....discounted boats
Aim Marine...discounts
Gee Gee baits....all free product
Eye Surrender Eye Wear....all free product
and a couple more in the works.......

But by far my best sponsor is my wife Carissa and Daughter Skyler....they will be with me for ever...

Do you remember Ascot??? I raced there all the time. That place was a sh.it hole crappy track but we did it anyways. I was there at the last race ever there. That place was packed.
Or how about Saddleback? The Magoo double Jump??
Heres a blast from the past...How about DeAnza? did anybody ever go to that track? Corona Raceway was killer.
How about when Sunrise was Sunrise and Not Racetown 395. It was the worst track in the summer...long, sandy and hotter than hell. Or how about INDIAN DUNES ?? All the top guys raced there to get ready for nationals...
Remember Broc "the golden boy" Glover, David "the Bandit" Baily, Mike "too tall" Bell, Mark "the Bomber" Barnet, "Goat" Brecker..his first name is Todd, Jeff "the Flying Freckle" Ward, Ricky "RJ" "the bad Boy" Johnson. Ron "the Machine" Lechien and sooo many others....How about Larry Huffman?? Nobody could ever come close to announcing a race like that maniac.
Remember "The Superbowl Of Motocross" the sh.it hole LA Colesium(spelling), The Rosebowl Supercross, of coarse Anaheim to start every year.
Remember when Baily won the Anaheim Supercross in like 1983 and Johnny Omara passed Broc Glover in the final turn to get 2nd, and both Baily and Omara did NO HANDERS over the finish line jump.    I went out and crashed my brains out the next day trying to do the no hander. Too FUN!!!
But thats how we lived back then...on the edge. Like the time when I was 7 or 8 and I jumped off the roof in my superman costume on Halloween because I wanted to fly.   I flew straight to the ER with a hurt elbow and leg and my mom didnt let me go trick or treat that night.

Hahaha...hey I wanted to fly like superman..what can I say.

Or how about in 1983 when Mark Barnett had the fastest Factory RM 250 on the planet and he killed everyone and won the Supercross Championship. I have his Jersey from the Rosebowl round that year. That was the race when Danny Magoo Chandler heard in the pits that someone was jumping a "double jump" (It wasnt done back then), now we have triples 110 ft table tops and Quads..hahahaha Anyways..He heard that someone turned two jumps into a double jump so when his heat race came he went out and jumped the wrong two jumps turning what was supposed to be two far apart jumps into a Double. Nobody else that night dared to do it. But Magoo was doing whipped One handers off it for the crowd. We loved that nutcase.

Good times......

Pete "The Bad Boy" Marino.....hahaha Tony Alessi (father of current factory race stars Mike and Jeff Alessi) gave me that nicname back in the Perris racing days in 1990- 94.
