Castaic Help Tomorrow (Sunday)
Castaic Help Tomorrow (Sunday)
Hey Guys, I was wondering if any of you can give me some tips for fishing Castaic tomorrow. I am taking my Uncle out for the day, He's been undergoing Chemo and I would like to get him on some fish. I've been waiting for it to warm up a bit before taking him out. I haven't been there for a while, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Ralph.

Re: Castaic Help Tomorrow (Sunday)
I just got back from there, and its tough. They brought the lake up at least 10 feet from last weekend and the fish are pissed. Fish deep and slow, the water is a cheeky 51 degrees and never did warm at all. Fish the steeper walls in 20-35 feet, thats where the fish seemed to be holding. The weather was great for boating but not for fishing, blue bird skies and not much wind. Good luck...

Re: Castaic Help Tomorrow (Sunday)
DL thanks for the reply. Did you have any fish in the boat?
The fishing was actually pretty good there today...
...the key is to fish VERY slow. If you think you are fishing too slow, slow down. Most fish were caught in 5 to 25 feet of water. Jigs and worms accounted for most of the fish weighed in. You can't go wrong splitshotting (not dropshotting) an oxblood light w/red flake Roboworm.
Good Luck!

I should qualify that...
...I meant absolutely no disrespect whatsoever to my good friend DL (but I think he probably knows that), nor was I trying to invalidate his report. He is very accurate in his description of the lake conditions and water level.
Although Jerry B and I had a 12.33 pound limit, we only had six keepers all day and, at times, went several hours between bites. That being said, by no means is Castaic WFO, but there are catchable fish.
DL is also 1000% accurate on the type of structure to fish (steep, diagonal, ledgey looking stuff - what I call “fudge rockâ€

Ralph,
Stick to the steepest walls you can find. Either on the west walls, the rock walls near the Island on the ski arm, Sharon's Rest new walls, the rock points outside of birdsnest, or the walls and points in new crapper cove on the north side of the fish arm and around to red clay.
Pitch to every crack and rock that's different, every undercut area, anything different.
Even when the fish are put off by rising water, they move up on the steep stuff to feed.
A slow falling jig, like a fat Ika, is the ticket. Pitch it tight, watch it fall, wait for the swim off, and swing hard.
Like Ron C. said, slow. It's totally a feeding bite, not reaction.
If that fails, drag a 4 1/2" robo worm on a drop shot rig in front of those walls, and over rock points in 25-35' of water. Slow

We had a great day today, but unfortunatley we had a skunk in the boat. I must admit, I'm a bit rusty. It was a great time non the less. Castaic sure doesn't look the same anymore. My uncle talked to one guy that said he had one fish all day, but it was a 6 pounder
. I really appreciate it guys.
