Back to fishing

Post by DanWarme »

Judging from the banter back and forth, (and the demented picts that keep getting posted) actual fishing talk doesn't seem to be real plentiful lately.

So I thought I would throw out a generic question and see what kind of response it gets.

It's spring time and the bass are starting to think about coming up and doing the nasty. The conditions for the conversation are:
Warming weather, clear water, 55 degrees. Clear skies light winds.
What do you look for, location and structure-wise to find your fish this time of year?

Id throw a jerk bait in 3-5 ft near spawning areas adjacent to deep water! Id prefer for some brush to be near or some type of cover in the water be it a rock or tree stump or junk motorcycle...

jerkbait is a great prespawn tool if you know how to fish them.

No firetiger! Ha...

Id throw a Evergreen M-1 Minnow in bluegill or Ayu. Depending on water clarity I might throw a Black/Gold if the water was really stained.

If it wasn't the M-1 Minnow I would probably have on a deeper diving Kicker Eater in the same colors or a C.C. Preditor.

And if all else fails I have a few HMKL K-1 minnows (hand made version) in the boat somewhere! Now that is a bait!

but no fire tiger! Ha.

Steve,

Arnt you in the same turny as I am?? Cool:) First off I wouldn't pay any attention to these guys, its just dock talk. I wont steer you wrong buddy.

If I were you Id spool up with 4 lb. mono on a light weight pole and since its that time of year I wouldn't even bog down your speedy Champion with all those extra poles and tackle, so leave everything at home, except that one pole, one bobber and a single hook. Anything else will slow down your boat because I can promise you its going to be a race to this spot that I'm suggesting. At the launch drive fast as you can to an area that's 300 yards from the Southern most part of the island, it should be about 200 ft deep. Now this is key so shhhhhhh don't tell anyone about this.

Ok, you need to position your boat in exactly 200 feet and stay there. Take your bobber and position it exactly 3 feet from your hook, not 2.5 and not 4 ft, it has to be 3 feet on the nose. Drop this right besides your boat and hold on buddy. Don't worry about what to put on a hook because the fish are so hungry they will eat a bare hook. Pay close attention because alot of times it might be a pressure bit. Good luck bro and I'll see you at weigh in. You owe me a cold one.

Dan, dont pay any attention to this post

I would have a shallow jerkbait tied on, and throw it on the edges of flats near deeper water. I'd fish a smaller rattletrap across the flats. Also a med diving crank.
I'd bring a hula grub on a jighead up the face of the dropoffs leading to the flats. I'd fish a jig along steep rock walls and points, and drag a jig off the flats into the deeper water, or uphill to the flats.
If I'm at Casitas, I'd throw a swimbait early and late.

Oh sorry. The clear sky thing that Dan mentions is what Im not to crazy about. Id hit wind blown shores next to spawing flats with a pointer or staysee in either an American shad or Ghost minnow or even a shallow runnin crank bait. Then I might pitch a Dropshot or a small jig in Tulies becuse of the lack of cloud cover. That would be my second choice if the reaction thing doesent work out. But then again someone might read this and say sheeezzz new guy

Right now Casitas is warmer than 55 and the vis is about 10 ft. What puzzles me is for as warm the water is the Bass act as thou it 45. I was finding 56-57 water on Sunday. And saw some in the shallows. They are starting to move up

I was reading 59 degrees early, then 61.5 later in the day out there. The water visibility was AT LEAST 10'... that was some of the clearest water I've seen in a while.

I myself never did see any fish shallow.

Do you think if Casitas gets a good portion of rain in the next couple of weeks, it will keep that 10' Vis?

I dont think so simply because of the run off. It might be clearer in the areas that has more rock along the shoreline

they are these little baits that swim.........They don't look like trout and diffently don't swim like them. They are like the flying lures or helocopter lures. Don't waste any money on them as they are just a BIG gimmic!!!!

Hmmm has there been a fishing answer given? If you know where the bass were... and you know where they want to go.. follow the road. I am certainly not a great stick but a few things spring to mind in the spring. Fish uphill whenever you can. That is the natural progression in the spring for the fish down to the bait. From deep to shallow. Fish are going to stage near their spawning areas near deep water in spots where they can ambush prey. They will be looking for high protien low energy meals.

I would try three baits for good quality fish. First would be a swimbait. I would give it a few casts on each point and across key ambush structures like a brushpile. I would expect my primary bait fo the day to be a jig worked uphill. Brown, brown/green or black this time of the year for me. Smaller profile jigs are my confidence. The crawdads are coming out of hibernation and should be moving from the deep water to shallows. The last bait I would look at is a crank. Crawdad or shad worked over any grass I could find begining to grow.

Now while all those things make logical sense to what I know... California bass read different books. And the true Cali sticks always seem to have a better read on the fish and spots. Hopefully one of them can give some insight.
