Stud Smallies at Pardee

Post by BSmith »

Check out the stud smallies that were caught at Pardee by Jody Menzes and Kyle Rasmussen. Not to mention the 12 pound black that filled out their limit. Hopefully there will be more of those at the Mother Lode Region Tournament on Saturday. The gate will open at 0430 and the registrations will be by the showers which is beside the parking lot. Any questions give me a call.

How big is that Spot in the picture?
Those are all toad smallies, what a blast that must've been to hook
and fight all of those.

I thought the water in Pardee came from Amador? No spots there.

What great fish.

Those guys are fishing studs.

That fish on the right is a spotted bass. Spotted bass have been in Pardee for several years. Most likely the result of an illegal introduction.

One of the key features that I see between those two fish is the length of the caudal peduncle, the area between the anal fin and the tail (caudal) fin. It is slightly longer on the spotted bass that on the smallmouth. This is apparent between the two fish in the photo. The most divinitive ID, would be to check for the tooth patch in the mouth. If a tooth patch is present then you have a spotted bass.

I have seen several pictures of large fish which show characteristics of both smallmouth and spotted bass. To truly ID the difference is to check for the tooth patch.

I hope this helps.

Regardless of species, those are some truly nice fish!

Looks like a hybrid to me. Smallmouth and something. Sucks to hear that spotted bass are in pardee. The fine for doing that should be $100,000.

I believe Larry Hemphill has cought spots once in a great while at amador.Hopefully he gives them to a shore angler for dinner! The same should happen at pardee. We have plenty of lakes with spots, probably most except clear lake and the delta.

They're in the Delta too. Just not a whole lot of them. There are some in the Sacramento River.

Water comes down from West Point to Pardee, then down to Camanche. Maybe the spots went up stream!

I posted the pictures for Kyle and Jody..That fish is a mule bass..Cross smallie and spot..There are lots of them is Hogan just down the road. I'm sure the spots were brought from Hogan or Camanche..The smallies are still king of this lake along with some monster largies.

My first thought was it absolutely was a mean mouth. Then, I decided it wasnt because I didnt know spots where in there.

My vote goes back to being a stunning meanmouth! What a beautiful fish

I'm siding with the Smallmouth X Spotted Bass group..... Which are actually a lot more common than most guys realize. Their are areas in the Delta which these fish are actually the predominant type.
I'm not sure if these fish are still viable or not.

BTW, I have caught these fish in Berryessa, Pardee, and even Clear Lk.

Typical Smallie:
Image

Probably a hybrid. It was actually this green. Colors were not even touched with photoshop. Look especially at the face.
Image

Cool fish though..... as long as they are either "not viable, and / or don't lead to a weakening of the Smallomouth gene pool in the long run".

They all look like fun to me!

The photo up top does look like a spot with about 10% smallie!

2 years ago while fishing Havasu I found a bed holding 3 fish that were doing there thing. One was a 4 lb smallie( cauhgt that one) the other was a 2 lb male smallie ( didn't land that one). And the third was a 5+ lb largemouth. (guestimate size) She was smart! I think there is a lot of cross-breeding going on. I was able to see Bret Gouvea's 7 lber up at shasta,( one of them) and it looked like a largemouth/spot mix, It was awesome!

How big of a lake is Pardee?

Hey Jimmy, they certainly are fun.

One thing I have learned about hybrids though, is that it is impossible to be completely sure of the percentage in the mix, without doing an actual DNA analysis, which even today, is fairly complicated, and still relatively expensive.

I'd like to think that even the fish which look "mostly Smallmouth" or "mostly Spots" were in fact, 50/50 mules.
If in fact the fish up top were > a spot with about 10% smallie < this would indicate that these fish are viable, and this would likely eventually ruin the Smallmouth gene pool...... which any biologists will surely tell you is almost always a "devastating thing".

........just when some thought that Spotted bass couldn't make things any worse :-(

I recall Folsom Lake in the 70's. Dennis Parika would take me up the North Fork in his Skeeter to throw Ricos around the rock piles for Small Mouth. We had some great trips and caught some fine fish. I noticed over the years that the smalls were being taken over by the spots. slowly but surely. Instead of the North for Smalls and the South for large, it sort of became all spots. years ago when I gave up on the lake, the smalls were rare and the predominate species became the Jet Skiers.

Hey Chris, I hear what your saying, and I think your right about the extinction of 100% smallies on some lakes, I am not sure what can be done but I will tell you there is some kind of hope if you look at the lake havasu fishery..........
This place has become an amazing smallmouth fishery and eventhough I dont know all the facts and maybe a so. cal guy can chime in but I beleive with the addition of all the habitat ( habitat= manmade structures) the smallies have thrived and are probably 50% of the fish population.............Optimistic!.........Who woulda thunk! Smallies in the desert? I bet in five years they will take over most of Mead as well! Ive caught 7 smallies on clearlake, would of been 8 as I watched a 4 lber eat my swimbait in practice one day! (Nope I didnt Swing)

SMALLIES and SPOTS DONT MIX!

I caught a "hybrid" (not a prius) out of Millerton once. It had a putple hue on it's scales in the sun. Beautiful fish. Spot body, smallie head.

when was the last time ya was at Powell? The smallies have taken over that lake in a big way! It's amazing to say the least. And from what we're seeing at Havasu, I agree, put em in Mead, they'll thrive there too and rebound that fishery as well!

We really need more great small mouth lakes. I have no doubt that our fisheries, especially the big ones in the deseart, can produce the kinda fisheries we see like the Columbia, Erie, Cumberlund, Pickwick, Dale Hallow and all thm others. Hell, as well as we grow them blackies and spots, we can have the smallies too!

Mead has a pretty good SM population already and they seemed to be doing quite well last time I was there. As time passes they will continue to improve that SH. Maybe someday we will look forward to Mead.

Chris , Unless I'm mistaken when cross breeding occurs between Smbass/spot the offspring are sterile and cannot reproduce themselves . I am sure this would be true of a SMbass/LMbass (meanmouth bass )as well . Given this the only possible species/trait ratio possible would be 50/50 without the help some genetic scientist tweaking the mix .

Powell!

Cooch, I have been there once and only once! Yes it did treat me well but that place was brutal.......Whats the water level like there now, I heard it was way down......I betcha we go back there soon with flw......By far the most amazing lake to take photos of! Well except spring break at havasu!

Well that explains what you all do in the motherload in the off season! :? Motherload treats, is this what is keeping our economy going strong? I'll be looking for "PUTPLE HUE" on the shelves of our friendly neighborhood safeway soon! 8) or is this only availible at curbside?
