Chatterbaits ??
Chatterbaits ??
Can someone skinny up some info on them and how they are used? I have looked in the Library here and a couple of other places with not much info on them.
How are they fished? The most I can gather is that they are similar to a SpinBait.....? yet they look like a jig ??
Does one Jig them off the bottom or swim them like a plug? Or jerk swim them????
And how is one's success in using them on the delta?
Thankyou for another NEW to me lesson everyone !!

Re: Chatterbaits ??
R U kidding me??? They can be used any of the ways you decribed. They are an awesome bait on the Delta. In the spring they work good reeled in like a spinnerbait. In the fall I use them like a jig. Last november I caught a 31 pound limit (for 5) on the Delta in 30 minutes! You might want to check out the ones made by Bobby D's. they are only sold at The Hook in Oakley, but they have a 5/0 hook and custom color's that will catch em'

Re: Chatterbaits ??
I fish these primarily as a spinnerbait -- they work very well fished like this. I have fished them as a jig too.
As Mike noted they work well fished a variety of ways experiment yourself.

Thank you again.
I am totally new to all this again and have never seen one except in The Hook.
Things have drastically changed on the market since some 20 plus years ago from what I daily fished in DBay.
Back then Flippin' just came on the market- I think I may still have some of those original frogs if Luke did not toss them from my tackle boxes that melted up in the attic.....

Re: Chatterbaits ??
Mike summed it up nicely, anyway you can think to fish it, you can catch them on it, pitch it and swim it back is one way that I use a lot.
Re: Chatterbaits ??
So you would it depend on the "way" you are fishing them to decide between using a 10-12 pound test on a Med action rod ...... to using on a medHvy rod with 15 pound test??
How exactly do they work? the chattering...... is it the noise in the jig or the wobble of the blade that is creating action??

Re: Chatterbaits ??
Has anyone had any problems with the snap on your chatter baits?
To answer your question Dan, it is mainly the wobble of the blade that creates noise and action...
None of mine have rattles like a flippin' jig but I wont doubt if they have one already...

Lowell,
YES!!! I've stretched open snaps this year. On the original chatterbait I broke snaps, blades, and hooks before giving up on them. I'm using Bobby D's now and they've resolved all of my issues. Still, just to be safe, I epoxy all of my snaps so that they can't ever open! For my cranks, etc... that might require snaps I found a japanese snap that is REALLY strong and the design won't let it stretch open.

Lowell,
PM'd you. If you're interested in Bobby D's bait you can get them at the hook or I'll give you one to try next time I see you.
Hollywood, No, its not the decoy but those are sweet snaps. I just checked to see if I could get some more before I put the name out there but they were out of stock so I'm going to have to keep my mouth shut for a bit... at least until they're in stock again. As for that Jackall bait, is it the Nitro blade or something new?

Re: Chatterbaits ??
not sure, i didn't pay much attention to them. I talked a bit with Toshi Ono but never really looked too much at the baits, just a glance here or there. Im assuming there on there website now but could be wrong.
Decoy makes some great products and the line up of new items for 2007 is awesome. They have a new product coming out that is awesome but it's still kinda hush hush over here although it was at the show and on display.

Re: Chatterbaits ??
I fish with multiple brands, Rad Lures, Booyah, Voo-Doo, Gambler, Cyclone, etc.
I have not experienced any problems at all with snaps nor hooks. I have landed multiple toads (biggest 10lbs 12oz - original rad lures chatterbait) and no failures of any kind.
I just picked up a couple more original chatterbaits and a mini booyah chatterbait 2 days ago. If you haven't fished chatterbaits, just go pick up a couple of any brand and go have some fun on the water. There is no wrong way to fish these baits, You can fish them just like a regular jig, hoping it along. You can fish it like a swim jig both fast and slow. The faster you fish it, the higher it rides, a decent speed will have it skimming over delta weeds and you can slow and drop in pockets. You can fish it just like a rip bait either shallow or deep. One could also say it fishes like a crank bait or a spinnerbait. You can put just about any soft plastic you want on these as a trailer.
Good Fishing,

Re: Chatterbaits ??
It is both smaller and it is a slightly different style. 1/8th oz, has a wire that runs from the nose to the hook ring and the blade is on that wire. (the wire is to allow it to run better with the lighter weight). But overall, it just looks like a mini chatterbait with the typical booyah jighead and red plastic insert eyes.
I trimmed about 1/4 inch off the skirt and a little of the flashibou off that was straggly. The booyah has that flex wire connecting jig head to the hook which allows the hook to bend and they claim it helps in not letting the fish throw it. Personally I have never had a fish throw a chatterbait of any kind. So I don't care about the flex. The reason I bring that up is that flex wire is the perfect place to add weight without loosing that small profile. Not to mention being able to throw it on heavier gear. I'm really excited to see how it does on the spots when they get lockjaw and they require a finesse presentation.

Check out the VooDoo
The best "chatter"-type bait out there is the VooDoo. This all due to its' superior vibration, custom colors and a head design that incorporates a trailer keeper and a quality gammy hook. Check them out the link below, you won't go wrong.

Re: Check out the VooDoo
These baits were developed "back east" for fishing in and around grass..Taking that thought they should be excellent around the Delta..But so far, I haven't caught anything except one lonely striper on one..

Mac,
I haven't done goog at the Delta with them either but my lakes have had better success. Your rite, they seem to cut through the weeds pretty good.

I haven't seen the VooDoo, but Silent Thunder by wacky worm dot com is my choice. Check them out , their hook is different and allows them to be rigged weedless. tim

Re: Check out the VooDoo
When I started reading how well they were suited for fishing in and around grass, I had very high expectations for them on the Delta..I still keep one handy and try them every time I am there..I am positive they should work, but so far I haven't had positive proof..I will admit I love to watch them swimming through the grass and will probably miss the first bass or two that tries to nail it due to having the crap scared out of me when they hit..Just watching them though, you sure get the feeling they should be very productive on the Delta..

Re: Chatterbaits ??
I have had some problems with the older style chatter baits myself. I have since started using the Voo-Doo, it's in the same family as the chatter bait only with much better components. Basically a better mouse trap is the best way to describe the Voo-Doo. They come in all sorts of different colors and sizes. In my personal opinion about the Voo-Doo bait is that is 2nd to none. It is by far the best bait "in that family" on the market. Don’t believe me give them a try and find out for yourself.

Re: Chatterbaits ??
A friend of mine that is listed on Tackle Tour.com as the Old Geezer...Phil White , fished a chatter bait last year for Smallmouth on the Snake River. Trouble was, he could not keep the channel cat fish off of it. He has a jet boat and runs that river all the time in the summer for the smalls. First I heard of cat fish nailing it.

Unfortunatly they don't have all the sizes listed on the web... I have some voodoo chatterbaits in 1oz that are really nice.
And voodoo has some really nice colors.
