Don't know of anyone in Sac. But if you come to the valley to fish pedro or McClure or one of the foothill lakes Escalon Bait and Tackle carries Powell rods.

I have a 704C and my wife has a 684C each with a Curado 101D on um. They are EXCELLENT. We use these rods ALL the time for jigs, drop shot, spinnerbaits...basically whatever. Just last Sunday I used the 704C with 10lb fluro on Clear Lake with a shakey head worm to take 16 fish...Powell rods are very, very good. I believe they just came out with a new line (or series within their existing line) so I doubt they are going anywheres.

I can't speak for them, but after a 100 years or whatever it is that they've been in business I don't think they'll fall off the map anytime soon. The Dobyns Rods I saw at the ISE show were sweet and if you plan on purchasing a flipping stick it might be worth your while to wait another couple weeks and compare them for yourself. I personally can't use either brand of flippin stick as they don't collapse and fit into a 7' locker so I will stick with my GL3 which really isn't a compromise at all 8)

The Powell name may have been around for a hundred years, but it is my understanding that there isn't a Powell left in the company. Read some sort of story where it appeared the Powell's were pushed out of their own company in somewhat of a hostile takeover type deal! Just what I read...........

Gone Fishing Marine in Dixon has the full line up of Powell Rods. They are right outside of Sac. Ask for Pete Say Matt sent you and he will help you out!

But they are the best rod for the money, hands down. They are not phasing out and are actually expanding. they are due to have a new premuim line out sometime this year. And no im not sponsored just love the product. Also i like the owner Keith. He is a stand up guy and loves what he does. Pm me if you need to know anything else or email me...

Let's be REAL CLEAR!

Post by Colebass »

The rods your buying from Powell were research, desgned and developed by Gary Dobyns, PERIOD! Does that help Powell, you bet it does, they will live off these rods for several years. Without Dobyns designing these rods or have his name associated, do you think we would have seen them grab so much market share already? NOT! Wouldn't have happened!

But the new rods, that is his company with his name on them will be the next generation! DOBYNS RODS, like the six million dollar man, better, faster and stronger. My experience with Gary shows me that quality and reputation are important to him, so I have complete confidence that his line of rods will be exceptional!

I'm with David on this one. It just doesn't make any sense that Gary would design his own rods equal to the rods that he already designed for Powell does it?? He wants an edge with his new rods so he designed them with that edge as Dave said above. Powells are great rods make no mistake about it. Gary designed the Powell Rods and but he took those designs to the next level with the Dobyns Rods. Rumor has it they might be cheaper in price too :)

If they end up made in China, they'll be cheaper.

Dobyns Rods in Stores

Post by Colebass »

the second or third week of April! The wesite is being designed as we speak (no not by Gary, there are some things he can't do! LOL!), so soon, you'll be able to all the models, location of dealers and everything else you would want from a website.

At the Fred HALL Show, Gary told me that his new rods are a better graphite quality than the rods he designed for Powell.

The powell rods are really sweet. If this line of rods would not have ever come to a head if not for Gary, then I thank Powell and Gary for having there short term partnership....I currently have 5 powells and hope to swap out the rest of my rods with them...top notch customer service and even better rods. I don't think that you can go wrong with either the Powell or Gary's.....and I really don't think that Powell as a company would be going anywhere but up!

try em' you'll like em'

You should fish with what you feel comfortable with. Don't follow a name or company, fish your confidence.
