What Kind of fishing knot did Aaron Martens tie?

Post by Brian Manthe »

I was watching the Elite on the Delta and they showed Aaron Martens retying his jig and it looked as if he was holding the line and then swinging the jig in a circular motion around the line. What kind of knot is this that he was tying?

Thanks,
Bassman

Most likely the start of the clinch or double clinch knot. Bill K

If it's what I think it is Randy Pringle taught that knot to me and called it a "speed knot". I use it on blades and buzzbaits. It is an easy and fast knot to tie. It is more of a slip knot. Hard to explain how to tie it though...

Brian,
The guys are correct, that knot is the "speed knot" and Randy Pringle is also an expert at it - just watch him at a tank demo.

You can practice it too with this website.
DONT ATTEMPT THE DOUBLE VERSION!
Scroll down to the "speed knot" at the bottom.

Very interesting ... this Speed Knot identical to what Gamma calls the 16/20 or Pitzen knot. It's also similar to the San Diego knot as well. I've been playing with both the San Diego and 16/20/Pitzen/speed knot for my fluorocarbon line applications with good results.

You guys are correct. Randy showed me this also when we were at the Amazon. The knot held up pretty good with those crazy fish..the line didn't do as well.. We used it a lot as our line would be freyed after a few fish. Very fast to get back in the water and keep fishing.

No ... but similar. With the San Diego knot, you have to put the tag end through the loop of the line at the hook. This knot, you don't do that, just put it through the loop on the other end. See here:

Bobby Barrack showed off the san diego at the snagproof seminar last year. I have been using it since and it is AWESOME! I will not using anything else now....works great on braid and mono!!!

Ok. I may be a bit slow at times. But none of the instructions say anything about "Swinging the bait around the line".

What am I missing??

John,

Well, I personally do not "swing the bait around the line". Rather, I hold the bait with my thumb and index finger on my left hand (I'm right handed), with my right pinky, I would may a loop and pinch it against my palm and twist the tag end of the line with my right thumb and index finger. My left pinky and other finger will help hold the tag line as it wraps around ... takes just about all EIGHT fingers (plus the two thumbs :)) to do this!

John,
The instructions dont say to swing the bait, but if you try it tying the knot you will realize that in order to wrap the tag line around the double line holding the bait, it just becomes an easy motion to "swing" the bait around like a jumprope and "wrap" the line around it.

Thats why it looks like your swinging the bait when its tied fast.
