Jerkbait question
Fished pedro sunday was throwing a jerkbait in the morning and time after time had a fish follow it all the way to the boat and then turn away once 10 ft from the boat. Tried different color longer pauses shorter pauses? What gives. what should I have done? Kind if a novice when it comes to rippin. I was using a luck craft pointer in rainbow trout and a shad pattern. 12 lb. cx moss grn.
Re: Jerkbait question
Did you try speeding it up to a very fast pace? That often works on followers... because they like cruising and looking, but a faster moving bait gives them no time to follow - they will just need to eat it or ignore it. Not 100% but, give it a try next time that situation arises!

Re: Jerkbait question
If the water was really clear and it was bright out then the fish are able to really see the lure well, conditions like this will lead to lots of followers and very few, if any takers.
I consistently have my best rip bites in low light conditions when the fish aren't quite able to see the bait with 100% accuracy. Early morning, late afternoon/evening or slightly windy conditions all tend to improve the rip bite. Anything that reduces the light penetration into the water should improve the rip bite.
My advice in clear, bright conditions; switch to a senko or a swimbait. If you insist on ripping use the most realistic pattern you have.....with the most "invisible" line you have.

Re: Jerkbait question
Like already mentioned, try natural colors in clear water and speed it up and make it more eratic on the retreive. Also, a rear treble hook with a feather can be just that little extra to make'em eat it.
