how long to make a leader

Post by backseater »

I've been fishing spiderwire for about 6 years now. I've never tied on a mono or floro leader. My question is, how long do you make the leader? I'm mainly going to be fishing top water lures in clear water. That's the reason for the leader. Any info will help, thanks alot!!!

Backseater,

I tie about a 2.5 leader to my braid and I use the Double Uni knot

Thanks for the info Lance. I'll try that length next time out. Do you ever try different lengths?

Not really, I just take enough line from the middle of my chest to an out reached arm's length, its about 2.5 feet for me. If the leader is to long then it can be hard to cast, if its to short then I'm worried about the fish seeing the braid. Most of the time I use Mono for top water, Flouro sinks and it hampers the action of your lure. Try both Mono and Flouro and see what works best for you.

Yeah I already found out about how floro sinks. When I first started to use it I threw on a spook and it was pulling nose down. At first I wasn't quite sure what was up until I noticed the line sinking. I'll be using 65lbs braid with either a 20 or 17lbs mono leader. I don't think I should have many problems with that combo. That's again for you information.
