What's the HOT, NEW thing????*

Post by kopper_bass »

OK,
So over the last 10 years or so, we've seen some great new things come out of the fishing world.

First it was the Senko.
While it still amazes me that even on this forum there are guys still learning things about these baits :D , it is without a doubt now a common fishing practice and being used all across the country. The senko has become mainstream!!

Next came dropshotting.
While i still don't think everyone does it acrosss the country, it is pretty common now. i know here on the WestCoast its blah, blah, blah! and you wouldnt be caught dead without a rig ready to go. So, that just screams mainstream!

Now its all the craze over swimbaits and wakebaits!
Yes, again here on the WestCoast we've had them for years, but now the word is getting out and everyone across the country is trying them and using them everywhere. Just try and call around to stores in other states trying to find a basstrix swimbait?
So, it seems like the swimbait is quickly becoming the mainstream!

Now there was the quick burst of the chatterbait, and this year's excitement has been about ShakyHead fishing, but these still havent been on the same level as these others. Do you think so? Then there's the technology advances with Lowrance color electronics & GPS, or Hummingbird's side imaging, or the Biosonix, but again these haven't really revolutionized the industry...yet!

So, my question is: What do you think will be the NEXT BIG THING?
What are some of you guys out there doing that is not on the mainstream that you think is going to really take off?

My Input? - I think the next BIG THING is going to be in materials. the use of materials in our everyday baits that are going to change how they work, how they feel, and ultimately how fish eat them; like soft plastics in rip baits and crankbaits, or weighted hardbaits for creature flipping baits! I also saw on the BassWest TV show Loomis showing off fethers for spinnerbait material.

Let me know what you think.

Kopper,

A lot of fads come and go. I can point to the Roboworm Zipper. Remember how many companies molded plastics in the Zipper mold? You don't see it too often now.

But still, the Zipper remains one of my most productive baits on the delta and Clear Lake. Even if it's out of fashion.

definetely will be seeing more modern materials...tungsten weights/rattles/spinnerbaits/jigs/etc.. hopefully the competition will drive the prices down  .

also cranks in all sizes/depths will turn into jointed or non-jointed.

power poles,sidefinders,GPS share sites

Sonar/satellite imaging combos. Already the new rage on the saltwater scene. Combines GPS positioning with realtime satellite images like Google Earth. These units also allow you to pinpoint a spot that someone else is fishing and log in the waypoint from long distances away. Think about it, spot stealing without ever putting a line on the water. What a concept. These units can also integrate your underwater camera imaging (Aqua view) and onboard mounted cameras to cover all the action. They can split the screen into 4 sectors and have all at once or even do overlay. Neat stuff. Anything you want if you have the $$$$$. The technology will only improve. Crazy stuff on the horizon in the integrated electronics arena.

Side imaging sonar. For years, it has been the difference maker in all of the major salt water tournaments, like the Bisbees, but it has cost $10,000.
Now Hummin' Bird has brought it to fresh water, and made it "affordable", if you can call $2K affordable. Of course, the newest top end Lowrance color units cost $2k, so everything is relative.
It lets anyone find fish-holding structure. That is the key to finding fish. It will take the place of time-on-the-water for people, like me, who come to bass fishing late, and don't have twenty years to invest in learning the lakes.
If I had any money, I'd invest in Hummin' Bird. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts Lowrance is sweating bullets right now, and has a side imaging unit on the drawing boards.
You can quote me.

Poke a hole in the nose with the hook point, then thread the hook eye in from the back. This avoids dragging the weight on the hook through the bait's nose.
It's just a beating.....till you fight back.

Yes. Tie your line to the hook AFTER placing the hook in the bait. As lion has pointed out - this is key - if you try and cram the weight through the nose it will reduce the life span of the bait.

It does take some practice as these baits are VERY soft.

Well Tom, you shouldn't have to wait too much longer. Dave should be gettin a few things wrapped up in the next few weeks, a few more details to test out and then it's a go. We have something goin on this week that I'm VERY anxious about, but my partner won't want the word to get out until after the weekend and we see how it goes.

As for the hot new video thing,,,,I'm workin on that one but it's gonna take a while...but I GUARANTEE that it will absolutely be the sickest fishing video you've ever seen. I'll bet my boat on that!!

Uhhh...I think frogs fit in that list of exceptional new baits. I realize frogs have been around forever but Bobby Barrack and Snagproof took them to a new level in the late 90's.

Still a great bait!

When I see the sweet beaver, it reminds me of a modified Zipper grub, which is another awesome bait.
