What does a fishing trip cost you ?

Post by Fish Chris »

Here's the cost for some of my trips;

Berryessa
launch = free
gas - boat = $10
gas - truck = $15
total = $25

San Pablo
launch + day use = $10
bridge toll = $6
gas - boat = $6
gas - truck = $15
total = $37

Pardee
gas - boat = $10
gas - truck = $30
total = $40

Clear Lk.
gas - boat = $12
gas - truck = $38
total = $50

These prices might sound cheap to those of you with high-per bass boats, and big V-8 trucks, but for a poor guy like myself, who tries to fish 140 days a year, these gas prices are killing me !

I'm not having to fish less "yet"... but its getting close.....

I wasn't trying to advertise that. But honestly, it's a really awesome place, and I fished there just as much (probably even more) when I did pay for it ! I love that place.

So how much does a trip cost you ???

PS, ....and you said "two to fish".... Hey, I got a pretty big belly on me, but so far, they only consider me to be "one" angler :-) LOL

I drive from San Jose so the towing gas is the major issue and the amount depends on where I go;

Delta:
Truck-$35-40
Launch-$10-12
Boat-$10-30 depends on how much running around
Food-$10+/-

Clearlake:
Truck-$75-80
Boat-$15
Launch-Free
Food-$20

Shasta: 2 days (pointless to go for 1)
Truck-$150
Boat-$30-50
Launch-$16 (Packers)
Food-$50-75
Lodging-$50

I would always add an extra $20 to any trip to factor in for tackle/line etc..
Toss in vehicle costs such as insurance/maintenance and it adds up. As the old bumper sticker says;
***/gas/grass nobody rides for free!
I would rather jog home from my own Vasectomy than spend Saturday at the mall.

Anyone from the San Jose area that wants to cut their cost by half or more, all they have to do is call me, stop by and pick me up and I will gladly share the cost of the trip..

Chris, I mainly fish Pardee, Oroville and Berryessa these days

Pardee for me would be $20.00 - $25.00 for the truck, $10.00 for the boat, and the $21.00 for launch and two to fish.

Oroville, $50.00 Truck, anywhere from $10.00 - $40.00 for the boat.
I buy the state park pass it's a couple hundred bucks but pays for Folsom Oroville etc. easily in ten trips.

Berryessa, $20.00 truck, $20.00 - $35.00 boat $12.00-$15.00 for launch fees.

I've read these types of posts before and it seems a lot of guys will post based on the size of their gas tanks, not what they use. I appreciate the breakdowns, it's interesting to see, as non-boat owner.

Hey Fish Chris, what do you tow your boat with? I fish out of a old 14' aluminum. As of now I have no truck and want to get something that will launch this boat and not cost me a fortune to fill up with gas. Do you think I'd ever need 4WD towing such a small and light boat? It's not a "Bass boat" like your G3, so it's not heavy at all. 2 people can pick it up off the trailer. Would just about any truck work?

Anyone who wants to comment on this feel free. Sorry to get off topic.

They're free...it's true!

Post by NaCl »

In fact, I'm pretty sure fishing saves me lots of money! Here is a partial list of the alternatives to fishing:

Treadmill EKG.....$645

Medication for stress related problems (blood pressure, arrythmias, anxiety, sleep disturbances, irritibility)......$372/month (name brand state-of-the- art drugs).

Metabolic correction (being in the sun helps produce certain vitamins necessary for good metabolic function)....$750/month for special diet and supplemental vitamins if NOT exposed to outdoors.

Divorce if not able to get therapeutic fishing trips....BIG DOLLARS!

Basically, the way I see it, it "costs" a whole lot more to NOT fish than to go fishing. I'm probably saving thousands of dollars each year by fishing! That's my perspective and I refuse to concede any other point of view! LOL!

Folsom:

Boat: depends $9.00-$12.00
Launch: Have season pass ($165.00 a Year)
Suburau: $5.00

Oroville:

Boat: $9.00-$27.00
Launch: Season Pass
Subaru: $35.00

Delta:

Boat: $9.00-$27.00 Depending on where I launch
Launch: 0-$15.00 depending on where I launch (free ramp= more gas for the boat)
Subaru: $10.00-$25.00 depending on where I launch

It is nice have only a 9 gallon tank in my boat as it has never costs me more than 30.00 to top off my tank. Pulling my boat with a 4-banger also helps, and I have never had any problems getting to or out of any lake I have fished. I tend to fish the Delta and Folsom the most , Folsom because it is less than 10 miles from my front door and the Delta because it is a great fishery that is close enough to not break the bank to fish.

What kind of Subaru do you tow the boat with and how big is your boat?

Sorry for the second thread jack. :D This is very useful information for me as I am looking for a tow vehicle. Thanks.

When I fish McClure, Pedro or Melones, it's about $85 a trip

When I fish the Delta, it's about $110 a trip

I run more on the Delta than I do on the lakes. I have started to run at around 4500 to 4800rpms which saves on gas.

A partner of mine broke out his credit card one day at Lake Shasta and spent almost $300.00 on fuel and Bridge Bay Resort. For the most part an average trip will cost a minimum of $75.00...

20 bucks, that's what my no boater gave me.

:D

Actually, I can drive to where I have permission, and bank fish for bass pretty cheap. But having a boat, still adds cost to the bank fishing trip because I am still paying insurance, and taxes on it, plus suffering depreciation, adds to the cost of owning it, so I would be silly not taking it fishing. That doesn't count maintenance items, or replacement upgrades.

Towmobile is a different subject. Those really cool big trucks come with their own list of expenses.

Right on. Thanks for all the replies. I have to say, while some of you are spending more than me on a trip, I don't see too many posters spending a lot more than me.... and some even less.

Hey Dean, I hear what your saying, and that's somewhat true for me too. Fishing definately keeps my head straight, and having a passion (no matter what it is) gives a person a reason to keep going, even on those days when you might otherwise just be a couch potato.
For me though, my work is also an important part of the whole equasion. I have often said I could fish Monday through Friday, hang out with friends and do other misc stuff on the weekends, never have to work, and still never be board........ But I have to say, my work gives me a ton of cardio vascular excersize. It's also the direct reason, that I "only" weigh 250.... instead of 450 ! And finally, 4 days of work each week has a way of making that first day on the water "extra cool" !
Anyway, maybe its just the years stacking up, but my 25 day vacation this year left me feeling pretty sluggish.... and "almost" ready to go back to work..... for about 1 or 2 days anyway, then I was quite ready to get back on the water ;-) LOL

Hey Joe W, I use an old, worn out Toyota Tacoma 4 cyl. to pull my 14 ft'er. The truck handles the boat okay, but gets LOUSY mileage. Like 18 or 19mpg :-( I know some of these brand new technology full size trucks with small V8's and 6's get darn near that. But anyway, at least I have a new boat, and a brand new car that I get to drive 4 days a week :-)
