GMC experts! Steering wheel column groan!

Post by gabuelhaj »

Just to ask if anyone has experienced a steering wheel column groaning noise. It's not the PS pump but the noise is actually coming from the steering column. It may have something to do with the brake booster (vacuum) on the firewall but I don't know for sure.

Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Yea...I have an 05Chev. DuraMax. I've known of three others that have went thru it . Myself and two friends havent done anything with yet ,one had it (Re-packed) as it was called and things are fine with him. I guess at one time ,dealers used to replace the assembly ,and now do the above repair . I've had the noise almost since the beginning (two years almost ,and 20k)...Charlie

Sorry,

It's a 1999 GMC Suburban with the 5.7 V-8.

You think it's related to the air bag or something? I know it's not the power steering pump and am sure it's coming from the column. I don't notice any mechanical malfunctions/skips, just the noise like a cow mooing and/or groan type noise. Only happens when turning the wheel, either direction, as well.

Would like some ideas before taking it into the shop.....

Thanks!

It was caused by the inner streering column shaft bushing or bearing, not an uncommon problem the "re-pack" will take care of it. My 97 Sub does it every once in a while but since we are no longer a GM dealer I just let it go. 2.5 labor for the sqeal its intermittent and does not affect performance.

I have an '02 Chev. 1/2 ton PK. Sounds like similar problem I had at 37,100 miles. Dealer replaced worn "intermidiate shaft". Parts and labor $175. Don't know if letting it go on would cause safety or more costly repair later on.
