Profession - State Employee

Post by Randy Walker »

not fishing related ~ unless you count the extra days off you get when your a state worker to be on the water
I was just wondering how many of you fine folks work for the State of Cal? how long can it take to be hired after testing and how fast can you move around within the state agencies to upgrade your pay? any info would be great

I have been a State worker for almost 12 years now. My second career after 24 years in the Air Force. Started with Water Resources and work for Caltrans now as an IT Manager. Once you pass an exam and get into the top three rankings, keep watching the State Personnel Board web page (www.spb.ca.gov) for vacancy announcements. Once you are hired, then watch for promotional exams that you qualify for. The more exams you pass the greater your opportunity. I have seen some folks who take a demotion to get into a field they like or one with more opportunities. Best thing to do is learn the rules and follow them. Work hard and establish a good reputation. Those all help for advancement. Much of the State work force is in their 40s and 50s so there will be opportunities for younger people coming in.

What exam(s) have you taken and passed so far?

Good luck.

I worked for the state as a student assistant for 2 years and I got picked up a few days ago as a permanent( I took the test a few months ago) . Take as many tests that you qualify for! I would also apply for a student or seasonal job also (they do not require tests, but it can help you get your foot in the door).
