Favorite summer pattern on Clear Lake?

Post by Mort »

I hope to experience a good frog bite this summer (mid-June), but I am sure their is some good fishing to be had other ways too!

Nothing beats topwater no matter what the bait is, but there is a great jig & crankbait bite in the summer. When it is reaction baits all day, I am happy.

The summer bite at Clear Lake has been fantastic the past few years. Very early in the morning I like topwater, buzzbaits, and the Berkley 10" black power worm. The quality bass love the big Power worm. Another good summer bait is the Yamamoto Kreature bait, 5". Color #301 is my favorite color!! Basstrix 4 and 5 inch swimbaits with the Spin Trix heads are a winner too, especially if the shad population is up again this year.

You can not beat the jig in the summer time at Clear Lake. You never know when you fell that tick if its going to be a teenager or not. The 2nd biggest bass I have ever caught was on a jig in the summer time... I have caught good number and good quality on jigs in the summer time..

I find it very tough.......

to not be chucking a brown/purple 1/2 oz jig to rock piles and ledges in 20-35 foot of water all summer long up there. The topwater bite at Clearlake in the summer is most excellent. That crankin bite can be special from then through the fall. But so many times, the weather & fishing pressure can chase those active, shallow fish deep. Where they will go hunker down with the other 75% of the fish in that lake during the summer. It's very tough ta git a crankbait down to those fish, we all need a lesson from the McAbees or that yoyo jiggin thing Sieg Taylor does with the LC lipless!! It's even tougher ta git em ta come up and blast the topwater. But it's real easy and productive ta drop that jig down on em in so many areas of that lake.

Another overlooked technique up there is a C-rigged Zoom Lizard!

on rock with a paca craw senior chunk trailer or berkely chigger craw trailer. Just constantly moving the jig and getting that reaction bite. Tick, tick, tick, tick, hop, tick, tick, tick, hop and then hang on. Pretty consistant bite for me. D.B.COOPER 8)
