Clear Lake wind by the numbers

Post by Big Rick KFOG »

So how much wind is lots of wind at Clear Lake?

Gusts recorded over 20 almost every hour all weekend. It never turned off.

Here's the last 7 days of hourly wx info from a station off Hy. 29 above Lower Lake.

"I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

"OK guys, Who brought the banana?"

About 20 is where at starts getting bad. At 25 it is bad and you can see 6' swells in some areas. At 20 or above you need to take in to account your experience in rough water and the boat you are heading out on. If it gets above 20 you will have to slow down and be cautious about making cross lake or N-S runs. Clear Lake on a windy day can kill you. If above 20 MPH I think hard about how bad I need to fish that day.

I have been in some pretty big tournaments where we just plowed to where we were protected and fished there. Funny thing is I cashed good checks in both of them. The biggest issues on Clear Lake is people trying to run way too fast when the water gets rough. It does not matter if you have a 24 footer, running on pad in 4' water will hurt you or your passinger.

20-25 mph winds will ruin most fishing days fer most guys. But at ClearLake, there are so many places you can escape to and find very fishable water. Jason, Steve and I fished in the south end Saturday, the wind was really not a bother to us at all and we had a 50+ fish day. I also had heard, that from Shagg Rock to the north end of the lake in Lakeport through Lucern, it was gorgeuos.

With that Mountain there, a lot of it depends on where the wind is coming from. A true north wind up there can be treacherous. The wind that swirls off Cobb Mt, strongly affects the southern part of the lake, and not so much the north end. The swirling wind off the moutain, doesn't create the nasty swells we see coming down through the Narrows, but can make the ride from Konocti to Redbud a definate "E" Ticket! A pure north wind, them swells generate from out of the middle of the lake, by the time they reach the Narrows, look out. Even a 10 mph wind can be scary at 2:00pm in the afternoon!

I think the wind really helps the fishing up there, ya just gotta be smart in yer travels from where ya launch to those areas that are protected so you can safely fish. Then just give yerself ample time for a slow, safe ride back!

Ps. Course ya ride around in a small Ranger all day with a rookie Captain, you'll be off to the chiropractor on Monday morning like me!

KISS MY WHAT? Rookie captain? ARE WE DOING THIS? ROOKIE CAPTAIN? Well, I guess it is true, then...We are fishing the WESTERN ROOKIE LEAGUE. Then it also must be true that we hired a ROOKIE GUIDE, when we should have hired a PROFESSIONAL GUIDE, because the ROOKIE CAPTAIN KICKED THE ROOKIE GUIDE'S @SS!!! (AS USUAL!!!)

Now that I think of it, I guess we we were pretty lucky getting back in ONE PIECE to the launch on Sunday, considering the ROOKIE GUIDE made us drive back on 4 foot swells after our run. If it weren't for the "small Ranger", we would have been DEAD!!

YOU WANT TO TAKE IT TO THE LOUNGE? BRING IT ON!! I WILL SHRED YOU.....HANDS DOWN.

We found fish yesterday in areas where the wind was manageable. At about 3PM I did try and make a run from Shag to Henderson and I decided against it after I was about 100 yards pass Shag and the rollers were HUGE. They tossed my boat (22.5' toon) quite nicely getting me soaking wet (which never happens). The combination of the WIND and the waves led me to turn around as I did not want the wave wind combo to flip my pontoon....that would be bad, very bad. No fish is that important.

It was the MOST MISERABLE DAY I HAVE EVER HAD ON THE WATER. :o
On the way back we were in 5 ft rollers with the wind to our backs going to Red Bud. Matthew is a very good operator but we still managed to spear 3 or 4 over the bow, on went the bilge pump. I was so dam wet i might have just have jumped in  Trying to get out at the dock with a bag of fish for the weigh in and not beat the CRAP out of the boat was just pointless. finely made a suicide jump and by some miracle made it. Wind in the morning but by 3:00 weigh in It was just plain SCAREY. I have got black and blue marks to prove it. Only managed 13.60 for 5 by the time we figured it out it was to late. I have got to stop listing to dock talk and fish my own plan.

Isn't that they way it's supposed ta work? Thanks fer the compliment! Yeah, you caught way more fish than I did, but I bet the 4 fish I did boat(we won't count that 6-7 pounder I summer saulted as ya wuz resting in the seat, from all the pounding you took, at the end of the day), I bet my best four, out weighed any seven that you caught! HAR! HAR! HAR!

Don't mind us gang, we have a ball tagether every time out, just ask Jason, he'll tell ya straight up! In fact, Steve and I been talkin bout a new bass fishin show, gonna call it Kruz-n-Cooch. No it ain't no sitcomm bout two gay fishermen, it's about a PC guy teaching an Apple guy how ta fish, and it'll be a whole lot more entertaining than Beat Charlie Moore! HAR! HAR! HAR!
