Perscription sunglasses?
Perscription sunglasses?
There was a post on here earlier this week I thought that had some links to perscription eye wear, one of them I had not seen before but was very interested in. Now I have looked through the last several days, but can not find the post, maybe it got deleted because the link was not a sponsor of this site.
Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Re: Perscription sunglasses?
You will get all kinds of opinions on sunglasses. Ask your eye Dr.
I just ordered a pair from Maui Jim. $450!!
But every eye Dr. I talked to said they are the best! I already knew that. I've been wearing them for the last 5 years. Try them, you will love them.

Also check to see if you have vision care through your plan.
I don't have/purchase vision coverage through my employer- I just go through Kaisers plan -- and they give me $150 per year towards frames/lenses on anything they have there.
I wear contacts and do not use their coverage much because the sunglasses have to at least be "prescription"(no matter how mild) to get the coverage. and the last thing I want is eye strain.

You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

I would definitely recommend checking out Smith Optics. They used to be marketed as Action Optics. I've been using prescription Smith glasses for a few years now and love them. They have a great warranty and offer some really good prescription styles.

I've got kaiser and I had them make me a pair of polarized with a mirror on some columbia frames that I love. They have been working great for sight fishing and they only ran me $90.00 out of pocket.

I agree with Mike. Maui Jims are great prescription sunglasses and have excellent polarization. They are expensive but I think well worth it. I tried solar bat and smith, both fell apart within a year. My Maui Jims turned out to run about $950 .
WARNING: Dont leave them laying out the second day you have them when your Chocolate Lab puppy is loose in the house. When I called Maui Jim to see if they were covered under warranty for dog distruction she said no, can you believe that!
My optomitrist gave me a break on the second pair.
They are the best glasses I have had.

I just got a pair of PanOptx Rx glasses that are amazing! With my insurance and such I got all the bells and whistles for $150.
The thing to do is to seek out some retailers for the different brands and go try them on. Almost all of the "big name" glasses are available with Rx lenses. Some will fit, others won't. Don't go by anyone's recommendations - it may very well not work for you! Get what fits your face if you are gong to spend the bux.

Re: Perscription sunglasses?
I regards to the fit of the frame, you may be limited as to what styles of glasses you can choose from. The wrap-around style glasses often have too much curvature for prescription lenses, so you may have to go with a more traditional frame, or one with a little less curve. Each company should have a list of prescription-compatible frames that will work. Trying them on is an absolute MUST, especially since you will live out of these glasses. I use mine all the time - whenever I'm outdoors hiking, driving, fishing, whatever. Make sure to go with glass lenses as well, and photochromatic can be nice, especially when the light gets low in the evening. Amber color, copper or brown lenses seem to have the best all-around color and definition, but some folks like the gray lenses for bright sun. A pair of Smith's would probably go 250-300, but they do cover the "dog ate my glasses" in the warranty. They will replace frames and standard lenses without charge, but prescription lenses are another issue. The prescription glasses are a tough one to skimp on, as it's one of the most important pieces of fishing gear you own.

Re: Perscription sunglasses?
A lot will also depend on your future decisions.... I personally plan to have lasik surgery within the next couple years. So I am not about to fork out 900.00 for prescription shades right now... I have done it several times in the past, but for now, I'll save the money and put it towards the surgery. I have even had some extreme wrap prescription sunglasses made, so that is still very possible. It will all depend on the optomitrist and how skilled their lab is.
I went with brown tinted polarized with a bronze mirror on my current pair. I can see better with them than I can with contact lenses and any non prescription polarized on. (So I don't bother with the contacts anymore). Once I have my surgery, I will play around with different non prescription sunglasses. For now, the best advise I can give is to have a mirror put over the polarized lenses. It seriously helps alot and it looks great too. Also get frames that wrap and contour to your face as much as possible and let as little light as possible around the frame.
I've worn alot of different polarized sun glasses in both prescription and non prescription. Several years ago, I tried adding a mirror tint to a pair just to see if I liked it. Ever since then, I have always got the mirrow tint on the polarized lenses. It's like the mirror enhances the polarization and I can see into the water 2 to 3 times better than anything else I have tried. There are many times when I am pointing to fish my partner cannot see with his polarized sun glasses.
Good fishing,
