Clear Lk... What's up with all the dinks ???
I was just up there Weds, and I must have caught 40 bass, all but two were under 3 lbs ? I mean, don't get me wrong, I never go to Clear Lk. with the "one big bite" mindset that I ususally have when I'm fishing the trout-fed trophy bass ponds..... But still, I usually expect 10 to 20, 3 to 6 lb'ers, and maybe a few 7's, and an 8 thrown in the mix.
I fished out of Lakeport, and was flipping small to medium sized live dads, under the ends of docks, and the big ones just were not there. Otherwise, I would have seen a bunch of them, and stuck a good number of them too.
I'd consider fishing the docks in the narrows, or Konocti, or Redbud next...... But have the bigger fish vacated those docks too ?
Clear Lk. used to be my "all Summer" hangout...... but back then, I spent more time on the rocks, than the docks..... and I hear that the rocky points and rock piles at Clear, just don't hold the fish like they used too. Do you think this is true ? Or are the guys that say that, just not using tiny, live dads ?
Anyway, just rambling I guess..........
Peace,
Fish

Re: Clear Lk... What's up with all the dinks ???
We just fished the WON Bass tourney and there was 3 guys over 30lbs, and 7th had like 25 lbs. I would say that the big fish are still there. We fished the south end and had 22lbs. We only got to fish a half day because the trolling motor cable broke. But all of our fish were over 4lbs. We fished rocks and docks but the guys with the big numbers said he were bed fishing. Hope that helps.
Re: Clear Lk... What's up with all the dinks ???
Welcome to Bass Fishing where we blame the fishery and not the presenter for how our day or weekend turns out. I think we have seen plenty of 10+ show up on Clear Lake this year as to not blame the fishery....so that leaves us with ?

Re: Clear Lk... What's up with all the dinks ???
No big fish?...this year's CL tournament results paint a different picture...
I fished Lakeport with artificials the past few weeks....Had one 8 1/4, several 5's, 4's out the yingyang and all the funsize that thought they could handle the Super Spook, as well...
My theory? There are SO MANY smaller fish on the docks, you're not getting through to the bigger fish, esp. with live bait. Also, turn your seat around & cast away from the shore, between the docks, etc. The big fish here are not hanging around all the annoying fishermen. we've seen tremendous pressure on this lake -tournaments every weekend, not to mention fun fishermen & local jerks like me, & we've been catching a lot of 'caught' (like your big smallie...) fish lately -broken jaws, ripped lips, etc. The post spawn girls want peace & quiet. It might take more than an afternoon's work to find 'em.
funny how spots/methods that used to work don't any more......and then years later, will again.
Had a 5 and a 6 on the North Shore yesterday evening, fishing the spook. Of course, we had over a dozen each of the 'fun size' fish like you were catchin on those 'dads.
Lakeport WILL be my all summer (year...) hangout. PM before your next trip for a full report.

It's Seig's fault.
Don't be lame. It's just fishing; you are not the new mesiah you know! Check your attitude at the door Mr. Spinners on da boat trailer.
Re: Clear Lk... What's up with all the dinks ???
All you do is rip on Clear Lake because it's not trout fed, too shallow, too cold in winter, bla, bla, bla.
Did it ever occur to you that you're not fishing the right method or area. I have not had a problem catching 25 pounds a day or close to every day and have had a 12.1 and 12.5 in the last month. (Both Weighed)
I'm sick of hearing you rip on Clear Lake and the Delta. Go back to San Pablo or Berryessa and throw the anchor and launch out both your spinning rods with crawdads and nightcrawlers and catch your 3,000th DD bass, it's really impressive and even more impressive that you brag about it on the internet.
Don't get me wrong, you seem like you can be a stand up guy at times, but Clear Lake is the best fishery on earth for LMB, not a World Record, but for numbers of quality bass from 8-12 LBS.
The catfish are biting pretty good and with live bait maybe you can beat that catfish record weight for number of fish or whatever it was way back when you broke it.
B.T.W. The fish are on the rocks just like they used to be, if not more.

Hammer, why would you be such a dickhead on the Internet ??? Is this how you are in person too ?
Your totally taking my words and twisting them to false meaning. I'm not "ripping on Clear Lk". I love Clear Lk. !
You said > Go back to San Pablo or Berryessa and throw the anchor and launch out both your spinning rods with crawdads and nightcrawlers and catch your 3,000th DD bass < I've never fished dads at Pablo, and I hardly ever fish them at Berry anymore either. That would make it "too tough". My philosophie is to stack the odds as high as I can in my favor.
You also said > Don't get me wrong, you seem like you can be a stand up guy at times <
Totally..... so why would you come onto a public forum and start talking out of your arse towards me ?
When you say > but Clear Lake is the best fishery on earth for LMB, not a World Record, but for numbers of quality bass from 8-12 LBS. <
Hmmmm..... No doubt Clear Lk. is an AWESOME LMB fishery, but I'd say "It's one of the best fisheries on the earth for numbers of very nice 3 to 8 lb'ers. As you climb into the 9 to 12 lb range however, those numbers drop off dramatically.... although it appears that the numbers of these bigger fish might in fact be on the rise again, and that's great. {how much so, and for how long remains to be seen.... but I'm hoping}
You mentioned that > The catfish are biting pretty good and with live bait maybe you can beat that catfish record weight for number of fish or whatever it was way back when you broke it. <
Well, we used dead bait.... Shad minnows dipnetted directly from the lake, to be precise. Easy to catch. Easy to store and transport, and best of all, free.
Also, we never set, or broke any kind of "official records" for the cats. We just caught a lot of big ones, and had lots of fun.
Finally you said > B.T.W. The fish are on the rocks just like they used to be, if not more. <
They were not around the rocky areas and points in the Konocti area 2 months ago (like they always had been in years past) but since you mention it, I might have to try the rocks at Clear again sometime this year, plus maybe the rockpiles in the Rattlesnake area, Shag, and Henderson.
Anyway, I'm not one to hold grudges. Just be cool, and I will be too.
Peace,
Fish

Re: Clear Lk... What's up with all the dinks ???
Let me set the record straight here;
I'm not saying the big fish have disapeared from Clear Lk. I was there about 2 months ago, and I saw tons of the nice 3 to 7 lb'ers and a good handful of 8 to 11 lb'ers too. But that was under docks in the Konocti area. (and I caught a good number of fish up to 6 lbs too. Lots of fun... which is why I love Clear Lk)
What I am saying is that in years past, you would see lots of nice 3 to 7's, and a few from 8 to 11, under the docks around Lakeport, just the same as they were at Konocti earlier this year, and usually stick a good handful of them also.
I was simply taken by surprise to not see them Weds......
As far as spawners go, they might still be spawning in the South end(s) or the narrows, but I only saw 3 spawned out females in my 11 hour trip, two of which I stuck, and those went 6.2 and 7.1 lbs. I know they can come back up to varying degrees, in the days and weeks to follow.... But I'm just talking about what they were doing when I was there.
I'm fully aware that a good number of DD bass were caught at Clear Lk. earlier this year, and that's great. Hopefully this trend will continue, and even increase over the next few years. Clear Lk is definately one of the most cyclical lakes I have ever studied.

Always amazes me when I guy comes on here and and simply makes a statement about his last trip and gets blasted by jhonny bass pro! Unfortunately I see it all the time on this site and that is why I never post anything about my fishing trips here. Hey Hammer take the steroid needle out of your buttcheek and lighten up. Dumbass!

Hey Lionkiller, again, I just meant to say, "Not many big ones FOR ME Weds" !
I hear you about getting through the little ones to get to the bigger ones..... and sometimes I think that might be the case, but I'm convinced there were no more than a very few under the docks Weds. (I hadn't said so, but I did see one very 10'ish fish that I couldn't get to go).
BTW, I almost "always" fish inside out
......not just at Clear Lk.
You said > funny how spots/methods that used to work don't any more......and then years later, will again. <
Totally ! And since it's been 5 years since I fished Clear Lk. really hard, I'm hoping it won't be too long before those same spots that I used to blast them on, are great again !
Great fishing to you this Summer,
Fish

Re: Clear Lk... What's up with all the dinks ???
You'd've needed a periscope to see the gal I pulled out, she was so far up under. Some of the Lakeport mamas are stashed well away, as far as they can get, esp. the ones on wood. I do think they're here, just not ready to be seen. We've seen several the past few weeks -but the weeds & algae have really come on for Westshore, too.
Drop a 'dad in 25' off Henderson. You might feel one a those gals before you see her!
Tight lines yerself.

Geeez, I'm just a lousy deep water angler.... Although I did get a 9 and change off of Henderson in about 20ft once. And I'm not beyond trying that again

All I know is I wish everyone would just forget about Henderson point. It's a god awful place to fish with nothing but snags and dinky dinky fish.
Lion I'm sorry I just don't believe you caught that fish there at Henderson.......IMPOSSIBLE !!!!

Re: Clear Lk... What's up with all the dinks ???
Hey Seig, yea', I sure had a problem on this trip
But I'm really confident that I could go back to Clear any time soon, and do quite well on the normal 3 to 7's that I ususally get there.
I found it very interesting (like, it explained everything) when that other gentleman came on and gave his recent "Trip to Clear Lk. report". They had fished all over the lake, and did great basically everywhere.... until they went to the North West corner of the lake. Carp everywhere, brutal tough fishing..... "A mistake" he called it ! He wasn't kidding !
.......so isn't it funny (well, not really for me) that I drove 130 miles from home, to the far end of Clear, to specifically target "the one Carp infested, blown out corner of the lake" ? Oh well.
I guess I could have ran way South.... but with my smaller boat, that's not always a safe thing. Plus, having fished 10 years out of an even smaller boat, I have the mindset of "launch in the general area I am going to fish" firmly engrained.
In fact, I think I might go back one day next week....... "Since I'm always ripping on the place, and I hate it so much" ! Doh !
Peace,
Fish

G3?
Dude I put in at Lucern yesterday and had to make the 'run' from Lakeport to Lucern at 4PM. I felt like I was on that show Deadliest Catch driving a crab boat in the Berring Sea. And that in a 21 ft Ranger. Would be interesting seeing you make that run Sieg in your G3 - of course I just point my tub in one direction and go. You're a better driver than I though.
Man - lots of Motrin for me this tournament! My Backs' already hurtin.
I'll be looking for you on the water. Oh and hey - If you take Dewayne out Friday, how bout me Thursday?

Re: Clear Lk... What's up with all the dinks ???
Dang Sieg...is that all it takes? heck, I have a problem catching CL fish too!! (please disregard my report from this past weekend). I'd love to fish with the CL guru sometime and if all it takes is for me to say I have a problem catchin' fish...then guess what...I have a problem catching fish.I will be the first to offer my services at No Charge.
please put me on the proverbial waiting list.
