While fishing near sandmound I heard and saw this boat comming towards us..... I sounded like it was going full throttle as it continued to pass us in a channel about 50 ft wide
at first I thought it was a ski boat but realized it was the Sheriff...no lights or siren.... I've boated for about 10 years and this is the closest I've ever been to being thrown off my boat due to someone's wake...this was my back seaters second trip and she was not very happy as well....Now I understand that most water skiers don't have a clue or plain and simply don't care but the Law....come on guys give us fun fisherman and women a break.....
Even if their on a mission they still need to consider the safety of others. If it's anything like the rules of the road for fire, police or ambulance if your not showing your colors with lights and sirens then you must follow the law no exceptions.
B Shafer I agree ...since I've been a firefighter for 21+ years and have driven for 13 of those 21.....we try and avoid causing another accident when inroute to an incident. FYI they came off plane about 50 yards past us made a turn and watched us go for the ride before they cut down another slew....I think they realized what happened but by then it was too late....
It's the sign of the times boyz. Unfortunatly law enforcement for the most part has become a show of toyz and ninja uniforms on the nightly news. Not that all are that way but some of the newer "Brass" consider that rolling out the SWAT gear for public display some how shows they're doing thier jobs. Most of us "old school" guys got much more done with community involved policing than what's happening now with all these "in your face" actions. Do you feel safer??????????????????
,,,whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do, when they come for you?
As a kid growing up, I learned to respect and appreciate the local cops. One evening when I was 16, I was hotrodding near the center of town...burned rubber completely around the town hall then headed out of town fast. My buddies laughed at my brazen act while I collected their dollar for winning the bet. Yes, for you young guys, a dollar was a lot of money back then...it bought 3 gallons of gas! About an hour later, I got home and there was an unfamiliar car parked in front of my house. My dad called me into the living room as I tried to slip quietly up stairs. His guest was the Chief of Police, Captain Lynch (no joke...that was really his name!)
Dad, took away my keys to the family car. My "hotrod" was a 1962 Rambler Ambassador with 327 chevy power, 4bbl carb and posi rear end...it was dad's! The Chief also gave me a ticket for exhibition of speed. That dollar lost it's luster real fast. And, I learned a great lesson about accountability because the local top cop tok the time to bring it "home" to me.
When the cops closed my neighborhood two weeks ago and caught three armed robbery suspects two houses away, while my 22 year old son was in the house, I was reminded that no one wants cops around until they need them.
I live eight doors down from the police academy near LAX, and the cadets run my street all the time, so I'm used to having a high police presence. But it still came as a shock when they arrested these guys, and nine others, staying in a rental house across the fence from my next door neighbor.
They found several dozen stolen guns, ammo, and a load of stolen plasma T.V.s.
Some rich guy from Palos Verdes owns the house, and rents it out under some govt. subsidized program.
The watch commander of our area said he was going to move to have the house "abated", whatever that means.
Sorry to rant, but, short story long, you never know what's going on when you see a cop speed by.
When I was a teenager, we (the local kids) had a stretch of Farm to Market road south of town that we held our drags on..The stretch was straight and level for about three miles and no turn offs in that stretch..We would all meet down there on Friday or Saturday evening and set a car at either end to watch and signal if there was traffic coming..It never failed that after we had run one or two the local Texas Highway Patrolman would show up..He would say pick your best car and if you can beat me I will supervise and keep you out of trouble..If you lose you all go home..We were always home by 8:30 PM..We never once even came close to beating him, even though we would pool our resources and try to get at least one car that could..By the way the Highway Patrolman was born and raised in that same hometown and had participated in the drags before he started regulating them..

Take a kid fishing, and don't forget about us older kids either..
The law enforcement guys in the Sheriff's boats on the Delta are total jackasses. Last year I was fishing in Bishop Cut right next to the bridge there fishing the outside weedline. A Sherrif boat came down the channel toward me, came off plane, and was motoring right on the weekline toward me. I moved in closer, right on the weedline and out of the way of the bridge opening so that he could go through there. He stopped, yelled at me that I needed to move so he could go through, and I'll be damned if he didn't motor right passed me, right over the stuff I was fishing, and went through the opening right next to the bank rather than the opening you're supposed to go through under the bridge. Now, tell me that wasn't intentionally trying to piss me off and mess up my day. Then, when he got under the bridge, he came to an idle and turned to watch me and I think he was waiting for me to say something to him so he could flex his badge to me. I just shook my head, what can ya do. I have also had them come closer than they need to on plane. I think it was the same a$$hole too. don't get me wrong, I'm behind law enforcement, but there are some PUNKS in the business these days.

After leaving the Marines, I spent 10 years "on the Job" so to speak and I have to agree with a lot of you. These new kids are more like punks than the actual punks and a big reason for that is a lack of maturity. When I started, I had 8 years as an active duty Marine, I was married and already had a kid at the ripe old age of 25. Now a days, the cities would rather hire a college grad with no life experience and no physical presence. These kids today have no idea what the term "command presence" means, so they have to act like a bad *** all the time.
If you think the cop was wrong or reckless....call 911 and have CHP patch you thru to the sheriffs office. Asked for the watch commander and let him know what the deputy did...
It was cuff'm and stuff'm. Now it's catch'm and release'm
They represent the Law and Order on our waterways.
I respect them- And I hope I have that same respect from them at all times.
Their direct # for the Contra Costa Boat Sheriff is in my cell phone- 925-427-8507 to ask for assistance when/if ever needed. -- You can also call that # to talk to their commander.
They do have to pilot the bigger cutter class of boats- unless they are in the RIB Inflatable.
The Main # for the Contra Costa Sheriff- 925-646-2441
The San Juacine County Boat Sheriff Direct Line is -- 209-953-8845
And the phone # for the Rio Vista CG Station direct line is 707-374-2871 -Used that # for a car that flipped and went in the water off the levee while we were duckhunting near Liberty and they were there within 18 minuets via a helechopter -- we could not get to them to assist their cry's for help. Was preaty cool as we stayed on the line for them that they used my cell as a GPS as I could not accurately name the road they went off.

You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.
DeltaDan, maybe you don't understand the situation I was describing. If you know the bridge in Bishop Cut, there's a big opening that is meant for boat traffic, and he did not use that. He instead made me move out of the way of one of the smaller side ones, and went over the top of where I was fishing to go through. No other boats around, no excuse or reason he "had" to go through the small one. And when he stopped on the other side, I absolutely know he was waiting for me to mouth off or something one why he did that. Straight up PUNKA$$ move, no two ways about it. Don't know what his problem is, but he needs to be fired.

Scott - I Just posted the #'s I carry with me in my cell phone Bro. ...... Also encourage everyone else to program those #'s into theirs as well. To use for any reason
PS- The 911 system on cellular phones goes into San Fran -- and from there they have to redirect you to the proper/local authorities -- You just lost a good 10 minuets of time for a possible emergency responce.

Regarding dispatch, find out what it is in your neck of the woods.
For me around Rio, or Brannan it is Solano Distpatch at (707) 421-7090.
This is important, because 911 on a cell will get you CHP and that isn't always what you might need.
No kidding, I can be on scene of a multi vehicle accident, and see several people on cell phones, and nobody has reported it at dispatch. I don't know who they are calling, Mom, DAD, attorney, ? have no idea, but it isn't emergency services. Always call, to make sure an ambl/EMT is on the way.

I get smaked around by their wakes in 5 mph zones at Pedro and Melones all the time..They drive the boats like thier cars. The other day driving from Twain Harte to Sonora I had one on my bumper. I went the speed limit all the way and i could see he was going crazy because he couldn't speed....They take care of there own too. The prison guards that work near Tulloch fly down O'Brynes Ferry road tweny miles over the limit with no fear of a ticket..Glad they are looking out for my safety at all times..Isn't that what they are paid to do????
Befor you "think" you have an idea of what it take or what they do, go on a ride along. then and only then you will understand what it takes everyday to be a officer. The boat eddy was talking about could have been on a call, they dont have to have there lights on to be racing to a call. I've been on PCH in downtown long beach code two(no lights) doing 50-60mph and stopping for red lights and stop signs. then flying like a bat outta hell!
If I am not mistaken, isn't Code 2 No Siren and lights only?
And yes, I have had my time with LE, I was not "in the fold" (a bad knee kept me out, but I did pass the written and orals with close to 100%) but I was an EMT Intermediate, so I know the risks associated with running a code call.
Boy of boy Hardshell did you hit it right. We(way back then) had people skills and had to handle whatever situation came along, mostly alone and sometimes with one or two backup officers rolling. Now adays most of the officers( I feel) just can not handle a problem without swat, etc. Times have changed, I realize, but people should deal with people, get the public to assist and not treat others like a number, if you know what I mean. That is why I fish/hunt and travel and enjoy my time on the face of this old planet. Bill K
Gator....In my city code 2 is red lights no siren.....but then again my city is just Oakland and we \can't compare to a real big city.....like oh.... no I'm not going there....
Eddybilt, if the officers had used their lights and sirens would that have changed your attitude about the wake? Sometimes an incident requires an immediate response but you don’t want to use lights and siren to warn the suspects. For example, if your home were in the process of being burglarized, would you want the police to respond with lights and sirens and warn the suspects or would you want the officers to get there as quickly and quietly as possible and catch the suspects in the act? I’m not making an excuse for the officer’s actions because safety always comes first, but there are a lot of variables to consider here. In the Fire Dept. you respond Code 1 or Code 3. With the Police Dept. you have code 1- (low priority no lights or siren), code 2- respond quickly but obey all traffic laws (no lights or siren), and code 3 (lights and siren) get there quickly and safely.
Hardshell, what are trying to say in your post? Law enforcement is under the microscope far more now than in the “old schoolâ€
WowI guess I opened a can of worms....Boss thanks for your input.... No....... lights and sirens would not have changed my attitude....simply comming off plane for a fraction of a minute or even a wave or gesture of opps sorry from the guy that wasn't driving the boat would have been appreciated.....And just FYI we do respond code 2 on certain calls assults shootings etc and will stage a safe distance away until the scene is secured by PD.
Understand I didn't start this topic with the intention of bad mouthing Police or Sheriffs.....I know we all make mistakes I would hope that everyone reads this and becomes more aware of how their actions can affect others.....
Hardshell here, to explain what I ment by my writings. First, let me give you some of my background. My son is 13 year veteren of Merced PD, my son-in-law has 20+ years with Fresno PD and is now a Homocide Detective in that organization, I recently retired after 23+ years with Merced County Sheriff as Correctional Facility Manager. Now, my criticism was not directed at the rank & file of law enforcment but to the new breed of supervisor that operates as you have stated, "IN THE PUBLICS EYE", which in most cases is designed to prove need, ie. $$$$$$$$. In my humble opinion that "in your face", "what you gonna do", BDU mentality has no place in community based policing. That attitude has served to alienate and seperate most of the general public from our policing organizations. I'm not saying that SWAT actions aren't required or useful but should be used as a last resort and not be "For Public Display". Case in point: In the small community I live we recently celebrated "Community Days" over the Memorial Day HD. There was a crowd of maybe 2500 and our SO was there to show a presents and act if needed. Half of the Officers were dressed in standard wash-n-wear street uniforms, which IMO is appropriate for such a gathering, and some wore BDV's with low slung weapons and no duty belts. Several people, knowing my former affiliation with the SO, made comments to me regarding this display. One, older very conservative law enforcement supporter, called them "JACK BOOTED THUGS"! My point is, that if Law Enforcement wants the support and admiration of the public those that lead should require that rank & file put best "public" face forward no matter how uncomfortable thier uniforms are. BigBossMan, I do not know your back ground, however if you are involved in Law Enforcement you have to know the mentality of which I speak ie. "The Squeeky Wheel gets the Greese", mo money, mo money, mo money!
Eddybuilt-You said he came off plane 50 yards past you, then made a U turn to watch. Like you said, it sounds like he knew he made a mistake but it was too late. He was probably trying to make sure he hadn't swamped you before he continued on.
