Bass Fishing Outside Lake Tahoe
Bass Fishing Outside Lake Tahoe
I moved out to the area a few months ago from the Northeast where bass fishing was no problem, but now out here it is all trout. I have been to Collins Lake outside of Grass Valley because I have heard it is the closest and best lake to fish for bass. Not that I don't enjoy it, but I was wondering if there were any other places closer to Tahoe to hit some bass.

Stampede, Boca and Prosser have bass. Unfortunately up there bass are for the most part regarded as a nuisance by most of the trout fisherman, not all, but most of the guy's I've run into. I asked someone about bass fishing at the sportshop in Ace Hardware (Truckee) and got some funny looks and a "why would you fish for them?" The 3 lakes I mentioned, I personally know because I have caught smallies in each of those lakes. Try a 5 wt flyrod with a streamer, leach or a wooley bugger, a marabou jig, during the hex hatch is an outstanding time. My guess is there are a few largemouth in those lakes as well.

I drop in on Stampede at the dam in the summer time and slay smallies all day while the old guys troll around the lake in there aluminum boats. Most are small, but the deeper I went the larger the smallies were. Good luck

There is a nice largmouth bass population in the Lake Tahoe Keys.
Here is a fishsniffer article that has more information about bass fishing in the high Sierras

Jenkins Lake (Sly Park -- and Rd off of hwy 50 - about 50 minuets from the tahoe basin) has a good population of small/decent sized smalies in it.
They are mostly in the back und where the one river and 2 streams feed in on the S.E side. They could be very well everywhere -- It is a warm crator lake. I have only fished in the shallowup to 10' deep) /grassy/sandier bottom side of the lake.
No worry about boats- that 1/2 of the lake is 5mph. You can also walk into it saving yourself $10 by taking the horse trails /paved staging areas off from the Morman Imigrant Trail. (past the 2and road dam.
If you wana pay and walk less - pay the park fee drive up to "the chinnenys" campgroung on the north side (Lot#128 I believe) and walk around to the south- you will already be at the waters edge and tramping on the goose chit. before you get to the vegitation cover. If you got a tube- its a great place to launch it.
--Also- No dogs are allowed "in the water" The ECID Board believes that the dogs pee in the water........ While the overpopulated geese get to chit on the bank

You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

There are some nice blacks in Tahoe for sure. The only time I fished
there was from shore and docks and caught a 4 , 6 and some smaller fish. They are northern strain. Smaller mouth and football shape. I saw a ton of fish this size in the keys. I bet they are in the keys now on beds or close to it.
