Rudeness
Rudeness
To the team fishing the J&T tournament last Saturday who pushed the guy and his wife off the spot on the sunken island, I just wanted to let you know that it was rude, obnoxious and uncalled for. IMHO, not a good representation of a bass angler, professional or amateur.
My wife and I had been camping at Casitas this weekend, and she came out with me Saturday afternoon for some sun. I was fishing the sunken island and saw the tournament boats coming out of the marina. One team screamed up to where we were, within a very short cast, made a circle on a GPS spot and proceeded to anchor up directly in my line of drift. I asked "how's it going?" to which I got no reply. I would have been more than happy to yield, as I always do for tournament anglers when I'm not competing, but I had as much right to the 'spot' as anyone - in fact more, as I was there first. Regardless, we were getting ready to head in and that just hastened our departure a bit.
Neither my wife nor I appreciated the act.

Re: Rudeness
I agree with tunaman and the others. There are very rude tourney anglers and it's uncalled for. I've had them park right in front of me face to face within 20ft after they saw me pull in a fish. I usually don't yield because like mentioned above I was there first and it's a matter of common courtesy. Anyway, I usually burn the spot before I leave it to them by going WOT. I believe one good turn deserves another.

Don't get mad get even...
It's actually against the law to prevent/inhibit someone from lawfully persuing fish & game. That being said....I had slipped out of the marina prior to a WON event years back at Cachuma and had already stuck a few when the field launched. I sat there frozen as I watched 6-8 boats all headed straight at me. I figured that they would turn off once they saw me hucking my big ol trout bait but I figured wrong. One boat actually ran over my line and cut me off. If you know me you'll know just how vocal I got with this idiot. I was told tough luck bud your not in the tournament. I went and got my 9 inch Slammer and stowed everything nice and neat slaming every lid in the boat. Then I pulled out my anchor and threw it as far as I could off the back of the boat and tied it to my back tie down....Then I idled away....
. I pulled up my anchor and found some local catfishermen and sent them over to the spot assuring them that it was crawling with red ear and watched them go over and dump there anchor with about a mile of chain right on the spot. Later I talked with the catfishermen and they thanked me profusly as they had hammered the panfish right where I'd sent them
....I think I set the bluegill off by tearing up that weedline. There must have been a ton of tastey things turned up by my anchor trolling antics. I was there first and to drive over my line and tell me to bad might work for some but what ya gonna do cry to the TD ????? Oh that's right tough luck bud I'm not in the tournament
A case in the extreme but don't worry Roger where your going for the next few weeks you won't be having this kind of problem. I hope it doesn't sour the little woman on us as we aren't all inconsiderate...unless as in my case it's provoked then ....well....

Re: Rudeness
Had the same thing happen to me during the WON tourney a couple of weeks ago at Casitas. The first time I had two boats converge on me at the same time when the shad popped up on the back side of the island. One of them tried to muscle me or started shouting how he was a tourney fisherman so I pulled out the anchor and fished crappie. I went back to the same spot to fish again in the afternoon and there was a rental boat full of girls who were taking their kids fishing. Same thing happened, the shad popped up and two different boats came flying in. On their way in they waked the rental and knocked their anchor loose. When the shad went down one of them took off at WOT and a few wakes went in their boat and they had to start bailing. I was so embarassed to be a bass fisherman at that moment.

Nah... we may be blowing off some seal bombs over the next several days, as I'm shifting gears and heading out on a 5 day trip on the American Angler in the morning. Tuna and 'tails for the next 5 days - no worries about encroachment there, except at the rail (and I know how to handle that one!).

I see you don't play on the big pond much Lance
Seal bombs are water resistant M-80's or what ever that the saltwater guys light and throw into the pesky seals diving around the boat. If you've ever had a 30 white seabass swiped by a seal you'd understand. We're supposed to scare them without hurting them. I figure those big a$$ 350+ pound adult males wouldn't care if you stuck down their throat when the dinner bell rings it's Pavlov's dog all over again.

We use them up here in Monterey when were out after Salmon.Nothing worse than bringing up just the head of a 20 plus Salmon only to watch a damn Sea Lion toss around a carcase just to eat the belly part.
Of course in a few year's it wont matter anymore when they close the whole coast line.Anybody want to buy a 26' Grady White

Re: Don't get mad get even...
I'm personally not into throwing M-80's to the very animals that keeps me from eating sick and diseased fish. If they eat your catch, oh well, bait up again. Kinda like getting made at Redtail Hawks because they smoke your Pigeons in my opinion.
I've had alot of underwater "encounters" with these pesky seals, even had one bite my fin and pull on it. Underwater they are playfull, acrobatic, awsome animals and should be treated as such. They are simply doing what is natural to them, why is this a bad thing.
If the argument is "well, there's to many of them around" I guess the macho men that caught and killed all the White sharks should have thought of that. But you dont want me to go into that.

Re: Don't get mad get even...
Those m-80's don't hurt those sea lions. They just get their bells rung. Like a 357 magnum snubnose blasted near your ear, which I guess is pretty loud but not as bad as a deckie pouring draino into a mack securing the mouth and tossing it in like I've seen. Tossing the bombs is conditioning a negative response to the assocaition of wide open slimestick bite near the sportboats = 357 blast. I like sealions though, don't get me wrong.
Re: Don't get mad get even...
Nah, the idea is to keep them at bay, not hurt them. Enough people shoot them as it is...
Sick and diseased??? You're talking the inshore species, not the offshore denizens like yellowtail, white seabass, tuna, dorado... they're pelagic (migratory) and not really subject to the polution and mercury poisoning that the inshore variety are subjected to.
We see the whities all the time at places like Guadalupe and such, and they are an amazing and awesome sight. None of the boats I frequent harm any of the protected critters... you have to respect the top of the food chains.

A Largemouth Bass is a beautiful creature, it minds it's own business until it eats an eighty dollar swimbait from some old guy in a fifty thousand dollar Bassboat. How dare you guys, I am appalled.
Re: Don't get mad get even...

Some guy,
Thats our nature as humans, we always feel we have to control every circumstance, idea, and animal, even if we know nothing about it. Look at the history of Yellowstone National Park, a shinning example of human control. Humans still dont understand the "reprocusions of actions" factor. My brother goes out and shoots coyotes because they howl and keep him from going to seep, then he cant figure out why he has a rabbit problem
Roger says the White Sharks out their but its obvious that there's not enough of them, the Seal population is huge.
To this day Peter Benchley (wrote Jaws) told Larry King that he regrets making the movie because of what happend to the population of White Sharks after his movie was released, every body and their mother went out and started killing them. The White Shark still hasent recovered to its pre-Jaws numbers.

I'd rather have the rabbit infestation than the coyote infestation. Heck, shoot the rabbits too and eat 'em...they're tasty lil critters.
At least he's not as bad off as 19X with that crab infestation.

Delta,
Dont get me going on PETA. Why is it we (meat eaters) dont impose on them but they feel it nessesary to impose their diet on us. I was reading on some other blog that guys really think they stuck a hook in that dogs mouth
Ill take Coyote's, Rabbits sit on your lawn, eat, poop in one spot and kill your lawn. Now get 30 of them and see what happens to your grass

I knew that Roger would get it you drop a couple of m80's on your way out and something tells me you would screw up the bite for the fishermen.... I have never seen a seal go belly up over them and come to think of it the Tuna keep biting too....
I like Rippas Idea of draggin an anchor and getting some catfish guys to camp the spots...

Re: Rudeness
It seems to me the old "50 yard rule" isn't something many guys know about or respect nowadays. Not that I've been fishing tournies the longest of any guys out there, but probably close to 20 years now.
Maybe that comes with the territory these days. more and more people fishing. But I've even gotten cut off at close range by a well-known tournament director at my home lake, in a tournament. What the heck?
Bottom line: If you cut someone off you better not be pissed if they bomb one out on you.

Re: Rudeness
Well, just got back in port this morning... had a WONDERFUL 5 days out on the big pond. For anyone who's interested, here's the story:
Sam opted to head straight for Cedros, as the albacore bite wasn't full-bore, so we ran from 10:00 AM on Wednesday until about 2:00 on Thursday. There was a pretty decent-sized ground swell working with us, and it was pretty breezy as well. Very comfortable ride down, though, as we were going with it.
We got to the middle of the east side and started hanging a great grade of yellowtail - most of the 'tails this trip were 20-35 pounds, with many in the 40-pound class and a couple that were just over 50. We fished 'til dark, and they bit pretty well during that time. I ended up with 5 for the day.
The next morning we started hanging big 'tails in the gray in the lee of the island. I got one to eat 60# on a dropper loop, and it felt big. Unfortunately, I was fishing heavy drag and pulled the hook half-way to the boat. Once the bite tapered off we headed off the south end of the island, and while there was good sign it was blowing pretty good and weren't able to get anything consistent going. Sam and Brian (we had both skippers for this trip) opted to work back up the lee side of the island, and we had some decent stops for the great grade of yellows. Unfortunately, as was discussed previously in this thread, the seals were relentless this day and took a huge toll. In fact, I hung one at one point and fought it for a little while just trying to break it off.
Towards the end of the day, Sam announced that he was going to take us to the albie grounds at 90+ miles, as a couple of boats had good counts on Friday. We ran from dark until about 2:00 in the afternoon on Saturday to get there, but it didn't take long to get the longfin going. We had several decent stops that afternoon, and the grade of albacore was excelletnt - mostly in the 20-30 pound range. I ended up the afternoon with 7, and the boat count was 81 for the day.
Sunday we awoke on the grounds again, but didn't have anything under us when I got up. The morning had some decent pick stops, then it was pretty quiet during the late-morning and early afternoon - we had somewhere around 50 albies on the boat early in the afternoon.
Somewhere late in the afternoon the fish popped up and we had a couple of 30-45 fish stops, with several more producing steady picks, and a few bluefin were also in the mix. At the end of the day, we had over 135 albies for the day, and was an excellent end to a fantastic trip.
So far, the offshore season is starting to shape up well. If you're planning to go out, get your trip booked soon as the trips are going to start to fill now that the counts are rising. There is a GREAT grade of fish to be caught, and the albies are stacked up over a hundred miles (unlike seasons past where they were in pockets). The bluefin are getting wrapped badly, as the seiners are thick and relentless, and sad to say Brian says bluefin fishing may never be what it once was.
Tight lines to everyone!
