jackpot permits
jackpot permits
A few guys get together once a month put a couple of bucks in the pot and go fish, winner take all. Turkey shoot, jack pot or whatever one wants to call it, fun fishing for the gas money it costs us. Is this considered a tournament, 5 to 15 boats depending on what the weather is like, Have heard DFG considers this a tournament, and we should be getting appropriate permits from them. the lake we fish at has said nothing when the rangers stop by, nice day good fish that sort of thing. anyone out there know for sure the protocols for these, sure wouldn't want to go to jail for breaking the laws and ruin a day fishing.
Any day on the lake is a great day

Don't call it a tournament, and have the weighin on the water. And don't say anything to anyone else.

It'd take a DFG Warden on a very bad day to want to cite you for this. Maybe the best way to do it is, make the payouts at the local food/tackle/gas establishment.
If they start ticketing for that the next thing you know they'll want a permit for the $1 - $5 a hole guys play golf for within their own foursome.
I am not an advocate for breaking laws... but, unless you are getting quite a lot of boats I would say this law (if it is - would be overkill)
Just my .02

There are.....
several types of permits that can be attained, in accordance to the frequency, number of entrants and the amount of the payout, that determines what, if any permit is required.
Send a note of to our Fisheries buddy at the DFG, Kyle Murphy @ kmurphy1@frontiernet.net , he'll give ya the exact rundown on where ya stand to the "T"!

Re: There are.....
Here lies the biggest problem guys. DFG permits are the least of the worries and you can get an annual permit that allows multiple dates and less than 25 boats.
The problem is liability. If you are the guy putting this thing on (taking/holding the money, blasting the boats off, weighing them in) then you are the director and leaving yourself open to any problems that may occur on the water. Do all your guys fishing have the proper insurance on their boat etc. Do you know all the guys fishing? If anything happened on the water like a boat accident is your *** covered as the director.....most likely the answer is no!!!! an momma won't get someone's attorney off your back or out of court.
It is a shame to say but way too big of a liability and why our true organizers are paying through the nose for insurance coverage.
If you are doing the event on a state ran lake (Oroville, Folsom etc) you need a state special use permit and if you are on a private facility I am sure they will want you to have liability coverage and may even require you to name them on the policy.
Hope this doesn't discourage you but it is the truth!!

Re: jackpot permits
The DFG code says that if anyone is offering prizes or other inducements for the taking of game fish, then they need to obtain a permit from the DFG.

You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.
